  • Austenitic stainless steel 316L has been used a lot of applications because of its high corrosion resistance and formability. In addition, copper brazing is employed to create complex shape of 316L stainless steel for various engineering parts. In such system, copper-based filler metals make galvanic cell at metal/filler metal interface, and it accelerates corrosion of stainless steel. Furthermore, Cu-rich region formed by diffused copper in austenitic stainless steel can promote a pitting corrosion. In this study, we used an ammonia (NH3) gas to nitride the 316L stainless steel for improving the corrosion resistance. The thickness of the nitride (nitrogen high) layer increased with the treatment temperature, and the surface hardness also increased. The potentiodynamic polarization test showed the improvement of corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel by enhancing the passivation on nitride layer. However, in case of high temperature nitriding, a chromium nitride was formed and its fraction increased, so that the corrosion resistance was decreased compared to the intact 316L stainless steel.

  • Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Induction heating is an efficient way to heat material by means of an electric current that is caused to flow through the material or its container by electromagnetic induction. It has various applications such as heat treatment, brazing, welding, melting, and mold heating. The present study covers a finite element analysis of the induction heating process which can rapidly raise mold temperature. To simulate the induction heating process, the electromagnetic field analysis and transient heat transfer analysis are required collectively. In this study, a coupled analysis connecting electromagnetic analysis with heat transfer simulation is carried out. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various heating conditions.

  • Joining of AIN ceramics to W and Cu by active-metal brazing method was tried with use of (Ag-Cu)-Ti alloy as insert-metal. Joints were produced under various conditions of temperature, holding time and Ti-content in (Ag-Cu) alloy Reaction and microstructural development in bonded interface were investigated through observation and analysis by SEM/EDS, EPMA and XRD. Joint strengths were measured by shear test. Bonded interface consists of two layers: an insert-metal layer of eutectic Ag- and Cu-rich phases and a reaction layer of TiN. Thickness of reaction layer increases with bonding temperature, holding time and Ti-content of insert-metal. It was confirmed that the growth of reaction layer is a diffusion-controlled process. Activation energy for this process was 260 KJ/mol which is lower than that for N diffusion in TiN. Maximum shear strength of 108 MPa and 72 MPa were obtained for AIN/W and AIN/Cu joints, respectively. Relationship between processing variables, joint strength and thickness of reaction layer was also explained.

The present study covers an experimental investigation of induction heating in order to rapidly raise the mold temperature. It is observed that the mold surface temperature is raised up to $200^{\circ}C$ in 2 seconds. This induction heating is applied to injection molding of a flexspline for a plastic harmonic drive, which has difficulty in cavity filling because its minimum thickness is only 0.35 mm. The induction heating is then successfully implemented on this ultra-thin wall molding by raising the mold surface temperature around the glass-transition temperature of the molding material.

  • The microchannel waterblock has a good capability in the cooling of electronic devices. The object of this paper is to study on thermal performance of microchannel water block for cooling of CPU in desktop. The effects of header shape, liquid flow rate, and inlet temperature on the thermal performances of microchannel waterblock are investigated experimentally. Three types of waterblock with different header shape are manufactured from the micro milling and brazing processing. The experiments are conducted using water, over a liquid flow rate ranging from 0.7 to 2.0 LPM and inlet temperature ranging from 20 to $35^{\circ}C$. Waterblocks are attached both horizontally and vertically on the test section to anticipate a performance of waterblock under the actual state in computer. The base temperature and thermal resistance decrease with increasing of liquid flow rate. It was found that the sample #1 was appropriate for the prototype of liquid cooling system.

  • We researched about a bulk metallic glass system as an additive to an Ag paste for high temperature thermoelectric modules. Bulk metallic glass (BMG) ribbons were produced by using a rapid solidification process (RSP) under a cooling rate condition higher than $10^{\circ}C/sec$. We investigated BMG characteristics of the ribbons by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in order to evaluate the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and the recrystallization temperature ($T_x$) lower than $400^{\circ}C$. A milling process was also developed to apply the BMG ribbons to a commercial Al paste as an additive for lower sintering temperature.

  • In recent years, many ceramic researchers have discoved various methods of joining ceramic to metal. However, most of these joining methods are perfomed under vacuum and pressured circumstances. So, when we join ceramic to metal, the proceedings are very complicated and require a very high cost. The purpose of this study is to develop a new joining method of an alumina ceramic to an aluminum metal in air atmosphere. The joining condition, such as copper metallizing, nickel plating, brazing, etc. was investigated through the shear strength test of the trial joint. The results obtained from the above experimenta are summarized as follows : 1) In the case of the $Al_2O_3$/$Al_2O_3$joint, the shear strength of the joint was affected by the various foctor such as kaolin content, copper metallizing thickness, firing temperature, firing time. 2) The better shear strength of the $Al_2O_3$/Al joint was obtained when Ni plating was conducted under higher current density than existing plating condition. 3) The shear strength of the $Al_2O_3$/Al joint increases with the Ni plating thickness is confined to the range of this paper. 4) The shear strength of the thermal-shocked specimen($Al_2O_3$/Al joint) was far more deteriorated than that of the as-bonded specimen.

  • In this study, Microstructure and tensile properties in arc brazed joints of 1000MPa grade DP steel using Cu-Si insert metal were investigated. The fusion zone was composed of Cu phase which solidified a little Fe and Si. The former phase formed due to dilute the edge of base material by arc, although Fe was not solid solution in Cu at the room temperature. Cu3Si particles formed by crystallization at $1100^{\circ}C$ during faster cooling. After the tensile shear test, there are no differences between the brazed joint efficiencies. The maximum joint efficient was about 37% compared to strength of base metal. It is better than that of arc brazed joint of DP steel using Cu-Sn filler metal. Fracture position of all brazing conditions was in the fusion zone. Crack initiation occurred at three junction point which was a stress singularity point of upper sheet, lower sheet and the fusion zone. And then crack propagated across the fusion zone. The reason why the fracture occurred at fusion zone was that the hardness of fusion zone was lower than that of base material and heat affected zone. The correlation among maximum load and hardness of fusion zone and EST at fractured position was $R^2=0.9338$. Therefore, this means that hardness and EST can have great impact on maximum load.

  • KIER has been developing the anode supported flat tubular SOFC stack for the intermediate temperature $(700{\sim}800^{\circ}C)$ operation. for this purpose, we have first fabricated anode supported flat tubular cells by the optimization between the current collecting method and the induction brazing process. After that we designed the compact fuel & air manifold by adopting the simulation technique to uniformly supply fuel & air gas and the unique seal & insulation method to make the more compact stack. For making stack, the prepared anode-supported flat tubular cells with effective electrode area of $90cm^2$ of connected in series with 12 modules, in which one module consists of two cells connected in parallel. The performance of stack in 3 % humidified $H_2$ and air at $800^{\circ}C$ shows maximum power of 507 W. Through these experiments, we obtained basic & advanced technology of the anode-supported flat tubular cell and established the proprietary concept of the anode-supported flat tubular SOFC stack in KIER.
