A beam is a major load-carrying member in many engineering structures. Beams with properly designed cross sections and stiffeners are required to enhance the structural properties. Such a design may cause various coupling behaviors, and therefore, an accurate analysis is essential for the proper design of beams. In this research, we manufactured box-beams with stiffeners, which mimic the out-of-plane composite bending-shear coupling behavior reported in literature. A modal test is carried out to obtain the dynamic characteristics, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes, of the box-beam. The obtained results are compared with those of 3D FEM, which confirm that the out-of-plane bending-shear coupling behavior reported in literature is possible. The coupling behavior can be controlled by the proper design of the stiffeners.
'Distortional buckling' is one of the predominant buckling types that may occur in a steel-concrete composite box beam (SCCBB) under a negative moment. The key factors, which affect the buckling modes, are the torsional and lateral restraints of the bottom plate of a SCCBB. Therefore, this article investigates the equivalent lateral and torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate of a SCCBB under a negative moment; the results of which show a linear coupling relationship between the applied forces and the lateral and/or torsional restraint stiffness, which are not depended on the cross-sectional properties of a SCCBB completely. The mathematical formulas for calculating the lateral and torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate can be used to estimate: (1) the critical distortional buckling stress of SCCBBs under a negative moment; and (2) the critical distortional moment of SCCBBs. This article develops an improved calculation method for SCCBBs on an elastic foundation, which takes into account the coupling effect between the applied forces and the lateral and/or torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate. This article analyzes the accuracy of the following calculation methods by using 24 examples of SCCBBs: (1) the conventional energy method; (2) the improved calculation method, as it has been derived in this article; and (3) the ANSYS finite element method. The results verify that the improved calculation method, as it has been proved in this article, is more accurate and reliable than that of the current energy method, which has been noted in the references.

This paper proposes a new 'finite element for the vibration analysis of thin-walled beams of rectangular closed sections. To predict the dynamic behavior of the thin-walled beam accurately, warping and distortion deformations should be considered for the analysis. The motivation of the present development is that conventional beam elements cannot describe correctly deformations such as warping and lozenging which are not negligible in some situations. Several numerical examples are studied to confirm the validity of the present element.

A four-noded curved shell finite element for the geometrically non-linear analysis of beams curved in plan is introduced. The structure is conceived as a sequence of macro-elements (ME) having the form of transversal segments of identical topology where each slice is formed using a number of the curved shell elements which have 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) per node. A curved box-girder beam example is modelled using various meshes and linear analysis results are compared to the solutions of a well-known computer program SAP2000. Linear and non-linear analyses of the beam under increasing uniformly distributed loads are also carried out. In addition to box-girder beams, the proposed element can also be used in modelling open-section beams with curved or straight axes and circular plates under radial compression. Buckling loads of a circular plate example are obtained for coarse and successively refined meshes and results are compared with each other. The advantage of this element is that curved systems can be realistically modelled and satisfactory results can be obtained even by using coarse meshes.

In this study, a new three-dimensional finite element analysis model of high-speed railway bridges considering train-bridge interaction, in which various improved finite elements are used for modeling structural members, is proposed. The box-type bridge deck of a railway bridge is modeled by the NFS(Nonconforming Flat Shell) elements with 6 degrees of freedom. Track structures are idealized using the beam finite elements with the offset of beam nodes and those on Winkler foundation with two parameters. And, the vehicle model devised for a high-speed train is employed, which has an articulated bogie system. By Lagrange's equations of motion, the equations of motion of a bridge-train system can be formulated. Finally, by deriving the equations of the forces acting on a bridge considering bridge-train interaction the complete system matrices of total bridge-train system can be constructed. As numerical examples of this study, 2-span PC box-girder bridge is analyzed and results are compared with experimental results.
The thin-plate structure and the box-beam structure are two typical welded structures in railway vehicles. Because of their structure complexity, bigger size and multi-seams, welding residual distortion which occur in welding process bring unfavorable effect on the quality of welding products manufacturing and service. As a result, welding distortion forecasting and control become an important and urgent research topic in railway vehicles. In this paper, three different numerical methods are presented corresponding to three typical types of welded structures of railway vehicles and welding deformation are simulated. Consistence of numerical results and experimental data proves the correctness of models and feasibility of simulation methods.
The fatigue damage accumulation rates of horizontally curved thin walled box-girder bridge have been estimated from vehicle-induced dynamic stress history using rain flow cycle counting method in the time domain approach. The curved box-girder bridge has been numerically modeled using computationally efficient thin walled box-beam finite elements, which take into account the important structural actions like torsional warping, distortion and distortional warping in addition to the conventional displacement and rotational degrees of freedom. Vehicle model includes heave-pitch-roll degrees of freedom with longitudinal and transverse input to the wheels. The bridge deck unevenness, which is taken as inputs to the vehicle wheels, has been assumed to be a realization of homogeneous random process specified by a power spectral density (PSD) function. The linear damage accumulation theory has been applied to calculate fatigue life. The fatigue life estimated by cycle counting method in time domain has been compared with those found by estimating the PSD of response in frequency domain. The frequency domain method uses an analytical expression involving spectral moment characteristics of stress process. The effects of some of the important parameters on fatigue life of the curved box bridge have been studied.

This paper presents the design, fabrication and performance of a reinforced concrete beam strengthened by GFRP box plate and its possibility for structural rehabilitations. The load capacity, ductility and failure mode of reinforced concrete structures strengthened by FRP box plate were investigated and compared with traditional FRP plate strengthening method. This is intended to assess the feasibility of using FRP box plate for repair and strengthening of damaged RC beams. A series of four-point bending tests were conducted on RC beams with or without strengthening FRP systems the influence of concrete cover thickness on the performance of overall stiffness of the structure. The parameters obtained by the experimental studies were the stiffness, strength, crack width and pattern, failure mode, respectively. The test yielded complete load-deflection curves from which the increase in load capacity and the failure mode was evaluated.

The structure of PSC box girder with FRP strut has a form of supporting the cantilever part in the widened upper slab by modifying the existing PSC box girder efficiently, and it is able to build an economical and aesthetically pleasing bridge as it reduces the size of the lower structure by reducing the self-weight of the upper structure. In this research, loading test of PSC Box Girder using full-scale mock-up was conducted and FEM analysis was performed. By comparing results, structural safety of the FRP strut and the upper slab following application of the strut in the PSC Box Girder Bridge were evaluated.

Thin-walled multicell box girders subjected to an eccentric load can he produced the three global behaviors of flexure, torsion, and distortion. Specially in railway bridges subjected to much eccentric load, it is quite important to evaluate influences of torsion and distortion. But it is very difficult to evaluate each influences of major behaviors numerically. If we can decompose an eccentric load P into flexural, torsional, and distortional forces. we can execute quantitative analysis each influences of major behaviors. Decomposition of Applied Load for Thin-walled Rectangular multi-cell box girders is reserched by Park, Nam- Hoi(Development of a multicell Box Beam Element Including Distortional Degrees of Freedom, 2003). But researches about trapezoidal multi-cell section is insufficient. So, this paper deals with multi-cell trapezoidal box girders. An expanded method, which is based on the force decomposition method for a single cell box girder given by Nakai and Yoo, is developed herein to decompose eccentric load Pinto flexural, torsional, and distortional forces. Derive formulas by decomposition of eccentric load is verified by 3D shell-modelling numerical analysis.
