  • The present research focuses on a methodology to describe shearing response of clay with respect to temperature. An increase of temperature shifts the normal consolidation line to move down in the plane of void ratio and mean effective stress. The critical state line, however, does not move as much as the normal consolidation line in accordance with temperature increase. As temperature increase, therefore, the difference between the critical state mean effective stress and the pre-consolidation pressure reduces. To reflect this easily, the present study applies a bounding surface consisting of two parts divided by the critical state mean effective stress. This study calibrated a bounding surface for the soft Bangkok clay and performed elemental simulation for undrained triaxial compression tests. The elemental simulation showed that the model can describe the mechanical response upon temperature of clay without complex hardening and evolution rules compared to the experimental data.

  • A method is described for ideally reconstructing the profile from a surface profiling measurement containing a reasonable amount of null measurement data. The proposed method can conjecture lost information and rectify irregular data that result due to bad measuring environments, signal transmission noise, or instrument-induced errors, The method adopts the concept of computer graphics and consists of several processing steps. First, a search for valid data in the neighborhood of the null data is performed. The valid data are then grouped and their contours are extracted. By analyzing these contours, a bounding box can be obtained and the general distribution of the entire area encompassing the valid and null data is determined Finally, an ideal surface model is overlaid onto the measurement results based on the bounding box, generating a complete reconstruction of the calculations, A surface-profiling task on a liquid crystal display photo spacer is used to verify the proposed method. The results are compared to those obtained through the use of a scanning electron microscope to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • The 3D Delaunay triangulation is the most widely used method for the mesh creation via the triangulation of a 3D point cloud. However, the method involves a heavy computational cost and, hence, in many interactive applications, it is not appropriate for surface triangulation. In this paper, we propose an efficient triangulation method to create a surface mesh from a 3D point cloud. We divide a set of object points into multiple subsets and apply the 2D Delaunay triangulation to each subset. A given 3D point cloud is cut into slices with respect to the OBB(Oriented Bounding Box) of the point set. The 2D Delaunay triangulation is applied to each subset producing a partial triangulation. The sum of the partial triangulations constitutes the global mesh. As a postprocessing process, we eliminate false edges introduced in the split steps of the triangulation and improve the results. The proposed method can be effectively applied to various image-based modeling applications.

  • Surface trimming is an essential function in a surface modeler for representing multi-boundary surfaces, blended surfaces, and surfaces with islands or pockets. A procedure and a data structure for designing trimmed surfaces were developed. For generating a trimmed surface, edges (curves difined on a surface) are generated and trimmed first. Then the trimmed edges are selected sequentially to form a closed loop. The data of supporting surface, surface on which the trimmed surface is defined, and bounding edges are stored and used for the application such as NC programming, robot programming, graphic display, etc.

  • Model studies on the response of homgeneous earth embankment dams subjected to strike-slip fault movement have been penomed via centrifuge and finite element analysis. The centrifuge model tests have shown that crack development in earth embankment experiences two major patters: shear failure deep inside the embankment and tension failure near the surface. The shear rupture zone develops from the base level and propagates upward continuously in the transverse direction but allows no open leakage chnnel. The open tensile cracks develop near the surface of the embankment, but they disappear deep in the embankment. The functional relationship has been developed based on the results of the centrifuge model tests incorporating tile variables of amount of fault movement, embankment geometry, and crack propagation extent in earth des. This set of information can be used as a guide line to evaluate a "transient" safety of the duaged embankment subjected to strike-slip fault movement. The finite element analysis has supplemented the additional expluations on crack development behavior identified from the results of the centrifuge model tests. The bounding surface time-independent plasticity soil model was employed in the numerical analysis. Due to the assumption of continuum in the current version of the 3-D FEM code, the prediction of the soil structure response beyond the failure condition was not quantitatively accurate. However, the fundamental mechanism of crack development was qualitatively evaluated based on the stress analysis for the deformed soil elements of the damaged earth embankment. The tensile failure zone is identified when the minor principal stress of the deformed soil elements less than zero. The shear failure zone is identified when the stress state of the deformed soil elements is at the point where the critical state line intersects the bounding surface.g surface.

  • In this study, a complete 3D surface reconstruction method is proposed based on the concept that the vertices, of surface model can be completely matched to the unstructured point cloud. In order to generate the initial mesh model from the point cloud, the mesh subdivision of bounding box and shrink-wrapping algorithm are introduced. The control mesh model for well representing the topology of point cloud is derived from the initial mesh model by using the mesh simplification technique based on the original QEM algorithm, and the parametric surface model for approximately representing the geometry of point cloud is derived by applying the local subdivision surface fitting scheme on the control mesh model. And, to reconstruct the complete matching surface model, the insertion of isolated points on the parametric surface model and the mesh optimization are carried out. Especially, the fast 3D surface reconstruction is realized by introducing the voxel-based nearest-point search algorithm, and the simulation results reveal the availability of the proposed surface reconstruction method.

  • Mesh generation for the region of interest is prerequisite for numerical analysis of governing partial differential equations describing phenomena with proper physic. Mesh generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine application of numerical approaches in Engineering applications. Therefore automatic mesh generation is highly pursued. In this paper automated quadrilateral surface mesh generation is proposed. According to the present method, Cartesian cells of proper resolution for a region bounding the whole region of interest are first generated and the interior cells are identified. Then projecting their surface meshes onto the boundary surfaces gives surface mesh consisting of quadrilateral cells. This method has been implemented as an application program, and example cases are given.

  • The prediction of soil response under repetitive mechanical loadings remains challenging in geotechnical engineering applications. Modeling the cyclic soil response requires a robust model validation with an experimental dataset. This study proposes a unique method adopting linearity of model constant with the number of cycles. The model allows the prediction of the terminal density of sediments when subjected to repetitive changes in pore-fluid pressure based on the two-surface plasticity. Model simulations are analyzed in combination with an experimental dataset of sandy sediments when subjected to repetitive changes in pore fluid pressure under constant deviatoric stress conditions. The results show that the modified plastic moduli in the two-surface plasticity model appear to be critical for determining the terminal density. The methodology introduced in this study is expected to contribute to the prediction of the terminal density and the evolution of shear strain at given repetitive loading conditions.
