  • Recently, the underwater radiated noises generated from large commercial ships have become a globally important issue. Countries with large ports and environmental protection organizations demand strict safety guidelines in relation to underwater radiated noise. In this paper, the coupled PFFE/PFBE method is used to investigate the vibration and underwater radiated noise of a commercial ship. PFFEM is employed to analyze the vibrational responses of the commercial ship, and PFBEM is applied to analyze the underwater radiation noise. The vibrational energy of the structure is treated as an acoustic intensity boundary condition of PFBEM to calculate the underwater radiation noise. Numerical simulations are presented for the commercial ship under various frequencies, and reliable results are obtained.

  • The attitude aerodynamic control is an important subject in the design of an aerospace plane. Usually, at high altitudes, this control is fulfilled by thrusters so that the implementation of an aerodynamic control of the vehicle has the advantage of reducing the amount of thrusters fuel to be loaded on board. In the present paper, the efficiency of a wing-flap has been evaluated considering a NACA 0010 airfoil with a trailing edge flap of length equal to 35% of the chord. Computational tests have been carried out in hypersonic, rarefied flow by a direct simulation Monte Carlo code at the altitudes of 65 and 85 km, in the range of angle of attack 0-40 deg. and with flap deflection equal to 0, 15 and 30 deg.. Effects of the flap deflection have been quantified by the variations of the aerodynamic force and of the longitudinal moment. The shock wave-boundary layer interaction and the shock wave-shock wave interaction have been also considered. A possible interaction of the leading edge shock wave and of the shock wave arising from the vertex of the convex corner, produced on the lower surface of the airfoil when the flap is deflected, generates a shock wave whose intensity is stronger than those of the two interacting shock waves. This produces a consistent increment of pressure and heat flux on the lower surface of the flap, where a thermal protection system is required.

  • The groundwater is a very important part of the environment and must be protected for the benefit of the present and future generation. The contamination of soil and groundwater by chemicals has become an increasing concern in the recent past. These chemicals enter the groundwater system by a wide variety of mechanisms, including accidental spills, land disposal of domestic and industrial wastes and application of agricultural fertilizers. Once introduced into an aquifer, these contaminants will be transported by flowing groundwater and may degrade water quality at nearby wells and streams. For improving the management and protection of groundwater resources, it is important to first understand the various processes that control the transport of contaminants in groundwater. Predictions of the fate of groundwater contaminants can be made to assess the effect of these chemicals on local water resources and to evaluate the effectiveness of remedial actions. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the behaviour of solute transport through porous media using laboratory experiments. Sodium chloride was used as a conservative chemical in the experiment. During the experiment, pulse boundary condition and continuous boundary conditions were used. Experimental results have been presented for conservative solute transport in the sand. The pattern of the break through curve remains almost same in all the cases of varying flow rate and initial concentration of conservative chemical.

  • Recently , our govermment makes effort to prevent oil pollutin at sea. However, we still remain vulnerable to oil spills near the borders it shares with China, Japan and Russia due to legal and administrative impedements associated with cross-boundary spill response activity. For a reasonalbel domestic implementation of the International Conventions related oil pollution , our government has already accepted several Conventions such as SOLA 74 , MARPOL 73/78, STCW 78, CLC 69 and FC 71 except an International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation, 1990. Therefore, this paper explores comprehesive legal structure applicable for future domestic legislation of international preparedness , response and co-operation on the base of the Convention, 1990. And also preliminary legal researches are to be done for earlier acceptance of the Convention, 1990. Consequently it is necessary to prepare natinal contigency plan and bilateral or multilateral agreements for oil pollution preparedness and response with adjacent natinos prior to acceptance of the Convention . In addition , it is also necessary that neighboring nations must take action to facilitate cross-boundary activities by responders providing responder immunity protection and by removing potential impediments to response activities by appropriate law and other requirements such as customs , immigration , and safety training.

  • The creep ratio, which has been applied as a measure to prevent piping failure in designing embankments, has been originally proposed for the protection of masonry or concrete dam from piping along the boundary surface between the foundation soil and the bottom of the structure. In this study, it has been investigated whether this creep ratio could be applied for the earth embankment through the model test and we reevaluated the required creep ratio in the present design criteria. Based on this research, it was concluded that a piping failure would always occur within the embankment body and not through the boundary surface between the embankment and foundation. Therefore it could be said that the present design criteria are illogical to determine the design creep ratio according to less permeable soil no matter whether the soil forms embankment or foundation.

  • Background: The emergency planning zone (EPZ) of the city of Busan is divided into the precautionary actions zone (PAZ) and the urgent protective action planning zone; which have a 5-km radius and a 20-km to 21-km radius from the nuclear power plant site, respectively. In this study, we assumed that a severe accident occurred at Shin-Kori nuclear unit 3 and evaluated the dispersion speed of radiological material at each distance at various wind speeds, and estimated the effective dose equivalent and the evacuation time of PAZ residents with the goal of supporting off-site emergency action planning for the nuclear site. Materials and Methods: The total effective dose equivalent, which shows the effect of released radioactive materials on the residents, was evaluated using the RASCAL 4.2 program. In addition, a survey of 1,036 residents was performed using a standardized questionnaire, and the resident evacuation time according to road and distance was analyzed using the VISSIM 6.0 program. Results and Discussion: According to the results obtained using the VISSIM and RASCAL programs, it would take approximately 80 to 252.2 minutes for permanent residents to move out of the PAZ boundary, 40 to 197.2 minutes for students, 60 to 232.2 minutes for the infirm, such as elderly people and those in a nursing home or hospital, and 30 to 182.2 minutes for those temporarily within the area. Consequently, in the event of any delay in the evacuation, it is estimated that the residents would be exposed to up to $10mSv{\cdot}h^{-1}$ of radiation at the Exclusion Area Boundaries (EAB) boundary and $4-6mSv{\cdot}h^{-1}$ at the PAZ boundary. Conclusion: It was shown that the evacuation time for the residents is adequate in light of the time lapse from the initial moment of a severe accident to the radiation release. However, in order to minimize the evacuation time, it is necessary to maintain a system of close collaboration to avoid traffic congestion and spontaneous evacuation attempts.

  • Stonewall in Jeju has been regarded as the one of the most esthetic landscape in rural regions. In addition, they have been played as a useful facility to protect houses or crops from strong winds, but also to indicate the boundary of ownership. In the recent research, stonewall has been appointed as the one of important components in rural landscape. Thus, stonewall in Jeju retains intrinsic and real value by many usages in rural regions. However, in spite of it's value, stonewall has been abandoned without any concerns and political measures. Now stonewall is urgently needed to be dealt by a certain political measure for protection. Therefore, the depth of concerns and systematic management measures for protection should be discussed and made, otherwise the destruction of these natural valuable structures will be continued. In this sense, the purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the status of stonewall in jeju. And then, with the result of this examination, political measures and suggestions to protect stonewall are proposed. Several areas such as Sungsan, Sinchon, and so on in Jeju are selected as the sample areas for this study, and examination are carried with a wide range of literature reviews and the GIS technology for data collection and analyses.

  • 3D FEM modeling based on 3D CAD data has been performed to evaluate the efficiency of CP system in a real operating nuclear power plant. The results of it successfully produced sophisticated profiles of electrolytic potential and current distributions in the soil of an interested area. This technology is expected to be a breakthrough for detection technology of damages on buried pipes when it comes into combining with a brand of area potential earth current (APEC) and ground penetrated radar (GPR) technologies. 2D current distribution and 2D current vectors on the earth surface from the APEC survey will be used as boundary conditions with exact 3D geometry data resulting in visualization of locations and extents of corrosion damages on the buried pipes in nuclear power plants.

  • The world geodetic system transformation of cadastral record have to minimize differences of boundary and area being in cadastral record according to transformation for that is direct connected with the land owner and property protection. However it is very difficult to accurately maintain the before and after transformation because coordinate transformation is generally using a mathematical conversion formula. At present, Helmert model by using 4-parameter is official coordinate transformation model for Cadastral Resurvey Project but scale factor is most sensitive to changes of area and relative position in the same parcel. In this study, it was proposed 3-parameter method using by scale factor fixing through the application of a Helmert in order to avoid changing the area difference and keeping the error within the tolerance range of the boundary which is related to the boundary point coordinate region.
