  • A novel technique for the fabrication of a glass micropipette-based thermal sensor was developed utilizing inexpensive thermocouple materials. Thermal fluctuation with a resolution of ${\pm}0.002$ K was measured using the fabricated thermal probe. The sensors comprise unleaded low-melting point solder alloy (Sn) as a core metal inside a borosilicate glass pipette coated with a thin film of Ni, creating a thermocouple junction at the tip. The sensor was calibrated using a thermally insulated calibration chamber, the temperature of which can be controlled with a precision of ${\pm}0.1$ K and the thermoelectric power (Seebeck coefficient) of the sensor was recorded from 8.46 to $8.86{\mu}V$/K. The sensor we have produced is both cost-effective and reliable for thermal conductivity measurements of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and biological temperature sensing at the micron level.

  • The machining technology for the brittle materials such as ceramics are applied to the fields of MEMS(micro electromechanical system) by the progress of new machining technologies such as Etching, Diamond machining, Micro drilling, EDM(Electro discharge machining), ECDM(Electro discharge machining), USM(Ultrasonic machining), LBM(Laser beam machining), EBM(Electron beam machining). Especially, the USM technology can be applied to the dieletric brittle materials such as silicon, borosilicate glass, silicon nitride, quartz and ceramics with high aspect ratio. The micro machining system with machining force controlled position servo is developed in this paper and the optimized ultrasonic machining algorithm is constructed by the force controlled position servo control. The load cell is adapted in the force measuring and the servo control algorithm, suit for the ultrasonic machining characteristics, is estabilished with using the PID auto-tunning functions at the PMAC system which is generally adapted in the field of robot industries. The precision force signal amplifier is constructed with high precision operational amplifier AD524. The vacuum adsorption chuck which is made of titanum and internal flow line is engraved, is used in the workpiece fixing. The mahining results by USM shows that there are some deviation between the force command and the actual machining force that the servo control algorithm should be applied in the machining procedures. Therefore, the constant force controlled position servo system is developed for the micro USM system and by the examination machining process in USM, the stable USM system is realized by tracking the average value of machining force.

  • The complex roles of flagella in the pathogenesis of Campylobacter jejuni, a major cause of worldwide foodborne diarrheal disease, are important. Compared with the wild-type, an insertional mutation of the flgA gene (cj0769c) demonstrated significant decrease in the biofilm formation of C. jejuni NCTC11168 on major food contact surfaces, such as polystyrene, stainless steel, and borosilicate glass. The flgA mutant was completely devoid of flagella and non-motile whereas the wild-type displayed the full-length flagella and motility. In addition, the biofilm formation of the wild-type was inversely dependent on the viscosity of the media. These results support that flagellar-mediated motility plays a significant role in the biofilm formation of C. jejuni NCTC11168. Moreover, our adhesion assay suggests that it plays an important role during biofilm maturation after initial attachment. Furthermore, C. jejuni NCTC11168 wild-type formed biofilm with a net-like structure of extracellular fiber-like material, but such a structure was significantly reduced in the biofilm of the flgA mutant. It supports that the extracellular fiber-like material may play a significant role in the biofilm formation of C. jejuni. This study demonstrated that flgA is essential for flagellar biosynthesis and motility, and plays a significant role in the biofilm formation of C. jejuni NCTC11168.

  • In this study, the electrorheological (ER) fluid was used as finishing agent. Since the apparent viscosity can be controlled by an electric field, the ER fluid can be one of efficient materials in finishing processes. To finish small 3-dimensional structures such as the aspherical surface in optical elements, the possible arrangement of a tool, part and auxiliary electrode was described. We examined the influence of the addition of a few abrasive particles on the performance of the ER fluid by measuring yield stress and observed the behavior of abrasive particles in the ER fluid by a CCD camera, which had been also theoretically predicted from the electromechanical principles of particles. On the basis of the above results, the steady flow analysis around the rotating micro tool was performed considering the non-uniform electric field. Finally, borosilicate glass was finished using the mixture of the ER fluid and abrasive particles and material removal with field strength and surface roughness were investigated.

  • It is necessary to minimize the thickness of Ni inner electrode layer and to improve the coverage of inner electrode, for the purpose of developing the ultra high-capacity multi layered ceramic capacitor (MLCC). Thus, low temperature sintering of dielectric $BaTiO_3$ ceramic should be precedently investigated. In this work, the relationship between dielectric properties of MLCC and batch condition such as mixing and milling methods was investigated in the $BaTiO_3$(BT)-Dy-Mg-Ba system with borosilicate glass as a sintering agent. In addition, several chip properties of MLCC manufactured by low temperature sintering were compared with conventionally manufactured MLCC. It was found that low temperature sintered MLCC showed better DC-bias property and lower aging rate. It was also confirmed that the thickness of Ni inner electrode layer became thinner and the coverage of inner electrode was improved through low temperature sintering.

  • Effect of glass addition on the low-temperature sintering and microwave dielectric properties of $BaTi_4O_9$-based ceramics were studied to develop the materials for the functional substrate of low-temperature co-fired ceramics. When 10 wt% of glass was added, sufficient densification was obtained and the relative density more than 98% was reached at the sintering temperature of$875{\circ}C$. The microwave dielectric properties were k=32, Q*f=9000 GHz, ${ au}_f$=10 ppm/${\circ}C$. As the amount of glass increased, phase decompositions from $BaTi_4O_9;to;BaTi_5O_{11};and;Ba_4Ti_{13}O_{30}$ was observed.

  • Nano/micro friction with the contact area was studied on Si-wafer (100) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) film. Borosilicate balls of radii $0.32{\mu}m,\;0.5{\mu}m,\;1.25{\mu}m\;and\;2.5{\mu}m$ mounted on the top of AFM tip (NPS) were used for nano-scale contact and Soda Lime glass balls of radii 0.25mm, 0.5mm, 1mm were used for micro-scale contact. At nano-scale, the friction between ball and surface was measured with the applied normal load using an atomic force microscope (AFM), and at micro scale it was measured using ball-on flat type micro-tribotester. All the experiments were conducted at controlled conditions of temperature $(24\pm1^{\circ}C)$ and humidity $(45\pm5\%)$. Friction was measured as a function of applied normal load in the range of 0-160nN at nano scale and in the range of $1000{\mu}N,\; 1500{\mu}N,\;3000{\mu}N\;and\;4800{\mu}N$ at micro scale. Results showed that the friction at nano scale increased with the applied normal load and ball size for both kinds of samples. Similar behavior of friction with the applied normal load and ball size was observed for Si-wafer at micro scale. However, for DLC friction decreased with the ball size. This difference of in behavior of friction in DLC nano- and microscale was attribute to the difference in the operating mechanisms. The evidence of the operating mechanisms at micro-scale were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). At micro-scale, solid-solid adhesion was dominant in Silicon-wafer, while plowing in DLC. Contrary to the nano scale that shows almost a wear-less situation, wear was prominent at micro-scale. At nano- and micro-scale, effect of contact area on the friction was discussed with the different applied normal load and ball size.

  • The understanding of the friction characteristics of micro-textured surface is of great importance to enhance the tribological properties of nano- and micro-devices. We fabricate rectangular patterns with submicron-scale structures on a Si wafer surface with various pitches and heights by using a focused ion beam (FIB). In addition, we fabricate tilted rectangular patterns to identify the influence of the tilt angle ($45^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$) on friction behaviour. We perform the friction test using lateral force microscopy (LFM) employing a colloidal probe. We fabricate the colloidal probe by attaching a $10{\pm}1-{\mu}m$-diameter borosilicate glass sphere to a tipless silicon cantilever by using a ultraviolet cure adhesive. The applied normal loads range between 200 nN and 1100 nN and the sliding speed was set to $12{\mu}m/s$. The test results show that the friction behavior varied depending on the pitch, height, and tilt angle of the microstructure. The friction forces were relatively lower for narrower and deeper pitches. The comparison of friction force between the sub-micro-structured surfaces and the original Si surface indicate an improvement of the friction property at a low load range. The current study provides a better understanding of the influence of pitch, height, and tilt angle of the microstructure on their tribological properties, enabling the design of sub-micro- and micro-structured Si surfaces to improve their mechanical durability.
