The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of several implant surface treatments to the bone formation, by placing Machined implants, 75${\mu}m$ Calcium phosphate-blasted implants and $Al_2O_3$-blasted and acid-etched implants in rabbit tibia through histomorphometric study. Two animals of each group were sacrificed at 2, 4, 8 weeks. The specimens containing the implants were dehydrated and embedded into hard methylmethacrylate plastic. Thereafter, the sections were ground to 50${\mu}m$. The specimens were stained with Villanueva bone stain for a light microscopic study. The results were as follows; 1. When the surface roughness of three different implants was measured by Surfcorder, the Ra of the Machined group, the RBM group and the SLA group was 0.16${\mu}m$, 0.44${\mu}m$, and 1.08${\mu}m$. 2. When examining the surfaces of the implants in the scanning microscope, Machined implant has the smooth surface with a few scratches, RBM implant has the rough surface with curled ridges and valleys, and SLA implant has the rough surface structures such as sharp protruding parts and micropits measuring 1-2${\mu}m$ in diameter. 3. After 2 weeks of implantation, the percentage of bone-to-implant contact of the Machined group, the RBM group and the SLA group was 26.86%, 35.40% and 45.99%. However, its differences between each group decreased during the healing periods. 4. After 2 weeks of implantation, the percentage of bone area inside the threads of the Machined group, the RBM group and the SLA group were 21.55%, 30.43% and 41.18%. However, its difference of bone area between machined group and surface treatment groups was maintained but the difference within the surface treatment groups decreased during the healing periods. In summary, the amount of bone formation in RBM and SLA group was greater than Machined group in early healing stage. These results suggest that RBM and SLA implants can reduce the healing period for osseointegration and may be suitable for early function.

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of three different implant surface treatments to the bone formation during osseous healing period under unloading conditions. Machined, double-acid etched and anodic oxidized implants were inserted into tibia of 3.0 - 3.5 kg NZ white male rabbits and 2 animals of each group were sacrificed at 2, 4 and 8 weeks. The specimens containing implant was dehydrated and embedded into hard methylmethacrylate plastic. After grinding to $50{\mu}m$, the specimens were stained with Villanueva bone stain. From each specimen, histomorphometric evaluation and the bone implant contact rate were analysed with optical microscope. The results were as follows; 1. In the scanning electronic microscopic examination, machined surface implant had several shallow and paralleled scratches on plain surface, double acid-etched implant had lots of minute wrinkles, rough valley and also irregularly located craters that looked like waves, anodic oxidized surface implant had porosity that minute holes were wholly distributed on the surface. 2. After 2 weeks of implantation, the percentages of bone-to-implant contact in the machined implant, double acid-etched implant and anodic oxidized implant were 26.85%, 62.64% and 59.82%, after 4 weeks of implantation they were 64.29%, 77.85% and 75.23%, and after 8 weeks they were 82.66%, 85.34% and 86.39%. 3. After 2 weeks of implantation, the percentages of bone area between threads in the machined implant, double acid-etched implant and anodic oxidized implant were 21.55%, 42.81%, and 40.33%, after 4 weeks of implantation they were 49.32%, 62.60% and 75.56%, and after 8 weeks they were 71.62%, 87.73% and 83.94%. In summary, percentages of implant surface contacted to bone trabeculae and bone formation area inside threads in double acid-etched implants and anodic oxidized implants were greater than machined implants in early healing stage. These results suggest that double acid-etched and anodic oxidized surface implants could reduce the healing period for osseointegration and may enable to do early function.
Purpose : The purpose of this pilot experiment was to evaluate early bone response in two types of coated implants using the rabbit tibia model. Materials and Methods : Screw type titanium implants manufactured with a calcium metaphosphate (CMP) coating and hydroxyapatite (HA) coating were placed in the tibiae of 3 New Zealand White rabbits. The bone responses at 2 weeks after insertion were evaluated and compared by histomorphometry. Results : There was no significant difference in bone-to-implant contact between the groups (P>.05). However, some qualitative differences on histologic views were found. Conclusions : CMP-coating is suggested to be the preferred candidate for fast osseointegration over HAcoating.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the distribution of stress in the surrounding bone around implant placed in the first and second molar region. Two different three-dimensional finite element model were designed according to vertical bone level around fixture ($4.0mm{\times}11.5mm$) on the second molar region. A mandibular segment containing two implant-abutments and a two-unit bridge system was molded as a cancellous core surrounded by a 2mm cortical layer. The mesial and distal section planes of the model were not covered by cortical bone and were constrained in all directions at the nodes. Two vertical loads and oblique loads of 200 N were applied at the center of occlusal surface (load A) or at a position of 2mm apart buccally from the center (load B). Von-Mises stresses were analyzed in the supporting bone. The results were as follows; 1. With the vertical load at the center of occlusal surface, the stress pattern on the cortical and cancellous bones around the implant on model 1 and 2 was changed, while the stress pattern on the cancellous bone with oblique load was not. 2. With the vertical load at the center of occlusal surface, the maximum von-Mises stress appeared in the outer distal side of the cortical bone on Model 1 and 2, while the maximum von-Mises stress appeared in the distal and lingual distal side of the cortical bone with oblique load. 3. With the vertical load at a position of 2 mm apart buccally from the center, there was the distribution of stress on the upper portion of the implant-bone interface and the cortical bone except for the cancellous bone, while there was a distribution of stress on the cancellous bones at the apical and lingual sides around the fixture and on the cortical bone with oblique load. 4. With the changes of the supporting bone on the second molar area, the stress pattern on the upper part of the cortical bone between two implants was changed, while the stress pattern on the cancellous bone was not. The results of this study suggest that establishing the optimum occlusal contact considering the direction and position of the load from the standpoint of stress distribution of surrounding bone will be clinically useful.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate exophytically vertical bone formation in residual ridge of the beagle dog by the concept of guided bone regeneration with a titanium reinforced e-PTFE membrane combined with irradiated cancellous human bone. Twelve male beagle dogs(mean age 1.5 years and mean weight 12kg) were used for this study. The alveolar ridges after extraction of all mandibular premolars were surgically and horizontally removed. At 8 weeks after extractions, full-thickness flap was reflected and cortical bone was removed with round bur and copious irrigation. Rectangular parallelepiped(10mm in length, 5mm in width, and 4mm in height) bended with titanium-reinforced e-PTFE(TR e-PTFE) membrane was placed on the decorticated alveolar ridge, fixed with metal pins and covered with full-thickness flap and assigned as a control group. Test groups ere treated with TR e-PTFE membrane filled with irradiated cancellous human bone. Of twelve beagle dogs, four control dogs and four test dogs without membrane exposure to oral cavity were sacrificed at 8 and 16 weeks respectively. The surgical sites were dissected out, fixed in 4% buffered formaldehyde, dyed using a Villanueva staining technique, and processed for embedding in plastic resin. The cutting and grinding methods were routinely processed for histologic and histomophometric analyis of exophytic bone formation as well as statistical analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Exophytic bone formation in the both of experimental groups was increased respectively after surgery from 23.40% at 8 weeks to 46.26% at 16 weeks in the control groups, from 40.23% at 8 weeks to 47.11% at 16 weeks in the test groups(p<0.05). 2. At 8 weeks after surgery, exophytic bone formation was made 40.23% in the test groups and 33.40% in the control groups. Exophytic bone formation was significantly made in the test group more than in the control group. At 16 weeks after surgery, exophytic bone formation was made 44.11% in the test groups and 46.26% in the control groups. Exophytic bone formation was made in the test groups more than in the control groups, but there was no statistically significant differences. 3. The membrane was fixed with metal pins to closely contact it to the bone surface. So, collapse and deviation of the membrane could be prevented and in growth of connective tissue also could be blocked from the periphery of the membrane. On the basis of these findings, wee suggest that intraoral experimental model for exophytic bone formation may be effective to evaluate the effect of bone graft material. And it indicates that combined use of membrane and ICB graft material is more effective than use of membrane only for exophytic bone formation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate bone formation around recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP-2)-coated implants placed with or without absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) in rabbit maxillary sinuses. Methods: The Schneiderian membrane was elevated and an implant was placed in 24 sinuses in 12 rabbits. The space created beneath the elevated membrane was filled with either blood (n=6) or ACS (n=6). In the rabbits in which this space was filled with blood, rhBMP-2-coated and non-coated implants were alternately placed on different sides. The resulting groups were referred to as the BC and BN groups, respectively. The AC and AN groups were produced in ACS-grafted rabbits in the same manner. Radiographic and histomorphometric analyses were performed after eight weeks of healing. Results: In micro-computed tomography analysis, the total augmented volume and new bone volume were significantly greater in the ACS-grafted sinuses than in the blood-filled sinuses (P<0.05). The histometric analysis showed that the areas of new bone and bone-to-implant contact were significantly larger in the AC group than in the AN group (P<0.05). In contrast, none of the parameters differed significantly between the BC and BN groups. Conclusions: The results of this pilot study indicate that the insertion of ACS after elevating the Schneiderian membrane, simultaneously with implant placement, can significantly increase the volume of the augmentation. However, in the present study, the rhBMP-2 coating exhibited limited effectiveness in enhancing the quantity and quality of regenerated bone.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of anodizing surface to osseointegration of implant by using of resonance frequency analysis (RFA), quantitative and qualitative assessment of an anodically modified implant type with regard to osseous healing qualities. A total of 96 screw-shaped implants were prepared for this study. 72 implants were prepared by electrochemical oxidation with different ways. 24 (group 1 SP) were prepared at galvanostatic mode in 0.25M sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. 24 (group 2GC) were prepared at galvanostatic mode in calcium glycerophosphate and calcium acetate and 24 (group 3 CMP (Calcium Metaphosphate) Coating were prepared at galvanostatic mode in 0.25M sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid followed by CMP coating. Rest of 24 (control group were as a control group of RBM surface. Bone tissue responses were evaluated by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) that were undertaken at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after implant placement in the mandible of mini-pig. Group 1 SP (anodized with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid implants) demonstrated slightly stronger bone responses than control Group RBM. Group 2 GC (anodized surface with calcium glycerophosphate and calcium acetate implants) demonstrated no difference which were compared with control group. Group 3 GMP (anodized and CMP coated implants) demonstrated slightly stronger and faster bone responses than any other implants. But, all observation result of RF A showed no significant differences between experimental groups with various surface type. Histomorphometric evaluation demonstrated significantly higher bone-to-implant contact for group 2 GC. Significantly more bone formation was found inside threaded area for group 2 GC. It was concluded that group 2 GC (anodized surface with calcium glycerophosphate and calcium acetate implants) showed more effects on the bone tissue responses than RBM surface in initial period of implantation. In addition, CMP showed a tendency to promote bone tissue responses.

Purpose: The osseointegration around titanium mini-implants installed in macroporous biphasic calcium phosphate (MBCP) blocks was evaluated after incubation with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in an ectopic subcutaneous rat model. Methods: Mini-implants (${\varphi}1.8{\times}12$ mm) were installed in MBCP blocks (bMBCPs, $4{\times}5{\times}15$ mm) loaded with rhBMP-2 at 0.1 mg/mL, and then implanted for 8 weeks into subcutaneous pockets of male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=10). A histomorphometric analysis was performed, and the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone density were evaluated. Results: Significant osteoinductive activity was induced in the rhBMP-2/bMBCP group. The percentage of BIC was $41.23{\pm}4.13%$ (mean${\pm}$standard deviation), while bone density was $33.47{\pm}5.73%$. In contrast, no bone formation was observed in the bMBCP only group. Conclusions: This model represents a more standardized tool for analyzing osseointegration and bone healing along the implant surface and in bMBCPs that excludes various healing factors derived from selected animals and defect models.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of systemically administered oxytocin (OT) on the implant-bone interface by using histomorphometric analysis and the removal torque test. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 10 adult, New Zealand white, female rabbits were used in this experiment. We placed 2 implants (CSM; CSM Implant, Daegu, South Korea) in each distal femoral metaphysis on both the right and left sides; the implants on both sides were placed 10 mm apart. In each rabbit, 1 implant was prepared for histomorphometric analysis and the other 3 were prepared for the removal torque test (RT). The animals received intramuscular injections of either saline (control group; 0.15 M NaCl) or OT (experimental group; $200{\mu}g/rabbit$). The injections were initiated on Day 3 following the implant surgery and were continued for 4 subsequent weeks; the injections were administered twice per day (at a 12-h interval), for 2 days per week. RESULTS. While no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups (P=.787), the control group had stronger removal torque values. The serum OT concentration (ELISA value) was higher in the OT-treated group, although no statistically significant difference was found. Further, the histomorphometric parameter (bone-to-implant contact [BIC], inter-thread bone, and peri-implant bone) values were higher in the experimental group, but the differences were not significant. CONCLUSION. We postulate that OT supplementation via intramuscular injection weakly contributes to the bone response at the implant-bone interface in rabbits. Therefore, higher concentrations or more frequent administration of OT may be required for a greater bone response to the implant. Further studies analyzing these aspects are needed.

Purpose : The study was designed to investigate the changes of plantar foot pressure by different loads during walking in flatfoot. Methods : Fifteen subjects with flatfoot were recruited along with their written informed consent. They were asked to walk on plate at a self-selected and comfortable speed with loads of 0, 5, 10, and 15kg. Three walking trials were obtained and then averaged for data analysis. Foot pressure were measured from RS-Scan system (RS-Scan system, RS scan Ltd., German) and contact area, maximum force were analyzed. Results : There were significant increases on midfoot and decreases on forefoot in contact area. And there were significant increases in maximum force of foot pressure of 2nd metatarsal bone and midfoot. Conclusion : These findings revealed that flatfoot increases risk factors of metatarsal bone with different loads. Therefore, patients of flatfoot must be careful during walking with loads or activities of daily living.
