The bonding efficacy of steel I-section embedded in metakaolin-fly ash-based geopolymer concrete (MK-FA-GC) was investigated in this study. Push-out tests were conducted on nine column specimens to evaluate the influence of compressive strength of concrete, embedded length of steel I-section, thickness of concrete cover, and stirrup ratio on the bond performance. Failure patterns, load-slip relationships, bond strength, and distribution of bond stress among the specimens were analyzed. The characteristic bond strength of geopolymer concrete (GC) increased with higher compressive strength, longer embedded steel section length, thicker concrete cover, and larger stirrup ratio. Empirical formulas for bond strength at the loading end were derived based on experimental data and a bond-slip constructive model for steel-reinforced MK-FA-GC was proposed. The calculated bond-slip curves showed good agreement with experimental results. Furthermore, numerical simulations using ABAQUS software were performed on column specimens by incorporating the suggested bond-slip relationship into connector elements to simulate the interface behavior between MK-FA-GC and the steel section. The simulation results showed a good correlation with the experimental findings.
Hydrogen peroxide at high concentration during walking bleaching may cause damage to the tooth structure and to the surrounding periodontal tissues and may develop external root resorption. Clinically, It is so important to find a method of prevention or minimization of these complications. The efficacy of various chamber-irrigating agents to eliminate residual hydrogen peroxide after walking bleaching was examined and compared with water rinse in this study. Extracted human 46 premolars without any cementoenamel junction defects were treated endodontically and based with IRM to 1 mm below CEJ and totally bleached 3 times for each tooth with 30% hydrogen peroxide and sodium perborate. Upon completion of the 3rd walking bleaching procedure, the cervical portion and pulp chamber of each group of teeth were irrigated with catalase, 70% ethylalcohol, acetone, and distilled water. And then, a radicular hydrogen peroxide penetration was measured with spectrophotometer immediately after each bleaching and following treatment with each chamber-irrigating agents, and the significance of their eliminating efficacy of residual hydrogen peroxide was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test. The results were obtained as follows. 1. Cervical root penetration of hydrogen peroxide was increased as the bleaching procedure was repeated(P<.01). 2. The most effective irrigant that removed residual hydrogen peroxide was the catalase, and the least effective one was water rinsing (P<.01).; there was no significant difference between the acetone and ethanol group. 3. The Irrigation with antioxidant enzyme or water-displacement solutions can eliminate residual oxygen radicals from the pulp chamber effectively after walking bleaching. So, these agents can reduce adverse effects such as cervical external resorption and periapical inflammation and prevent residual $O_2$ from impeding composite resin polymerization, thus increase the bonding strength of composite resin. This, in turn reduces microleakage and discoloration of the esthetic restoration, extending its service-life.

This experimental study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of polyvinylpyrrolidone-sodium hyaluronate(Aloclair$^{TM}$) in decreasing pain in orthodontic procedures. A total of 60 patients who were use Aloclair$^{TM}$ ordered to were included. These patients were categorized by 3 cases; 1. Patients who were bonded with their first brackets. 2. Patients who were in pain with additional appliance such as anchorage devices. 3. Patients who got ulcer caused by appliances. We collected information about pain and assessed it using visual analogue scale. According to questionnaire, it took 3.5 min. for pain to subside and pair relief durated for 2.7 hours. Most patients in the study reported rapid pain relief and found Aloclair$^{TM}$ easy and pleasant to use than wax. Accordingly Aloclair$^{TM}$ provided raid relief of resting and provoked ulcer pain.
The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of pomegranate hull colorant as a natural hair coloring dye. The extract of pomegranate hull was concentrated and freeze-dried to get colorant powder. Effect of dyeing condition and mordanting on the dye uptake of hair by using Al, Fe, Cu, Cr, Sn compounds, color change and colorfastness were explored. In addition, tensile strength was measured and the surface of the hair was observed. Dye uptake of hair measured by K/S value (400 nm) indicated that ionic bonding seems to be involved in the sorption of pomegranate colorant to hair. Maximum sorption was obtained at pH 3.5 and the concentration of 50% (on the weight of hair, o.w.h.). Acidic dyeing condition (pH $3.5{\sim}5.0$) showed yellow color however alkaline dyeing condition (pH $7{\sim}11$) gave reddish yellow color. Pomegranate hull colorant produced greyish brown color on hair and the hair mordanted with Fe showed dark brown color. Mordants except Fe did not increase dye uptake significantly. Mordants except Cu increased light fastness and mordants except Cr increased washing fastness level slightly. According to SEM observation and the tensile strength retention measurement, the mordant dyed hair gave more damage to hair by ultraviolet light and washing than the hair dyed without mordanting. Experimental results of K/S value and colorfastness(light and washing) supported that pomegranate hull colorant without mordanting can be used as a semi-permanent natural hair coloring dye.
PURPOSE. Numerous methods were used to etch the fiber posts to improve its bonding to root canal dentin. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of 37% phosphoric acid in etching fiber posts in comparison with 24% hydrogen peroxide. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety human maxillary central incisors were taken and post space preparation was done. Ninety fiber posts were taken and divided into three groups (n=30) based on the surface treatment they received ($H_3PO_4$, $H_2O_2$, distilled water) and each group was further divided (n=10) based on the time period of application (15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds). All the posts were luted into canals using Rely X UniCem-2. Each tooth was then sectioned into six slices and subjected to push out test. Data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis at P<.05. The surface topography was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. Highest bond strength values were noted in 15 seconds etched phosphoric acid group and 60 seconds etched hydrogen peroxide group with no significant difference between two groups. Surface topography revealed complete epoxy layer removal with no damage to its structural integrity in those groups. CONCLUSION. $H_3PO_4$ etching for a period of 15 seconds is an effective alternative in improving the adhesion of fiber post to root dentin.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the shear bond strength of resin luting agent to dentin surfaces cleansed with different agents like pumice, ultrasonic scaler with chlorhexidine gluconate, EDTA and the influence of these cleansing methods on wetting properties of the dentin by Axisymmetric drop Shape Analysis - Contact Diameter technique (ADSA-CD). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty coronal portions of human third molar were prepared until dentin was exposed. Specimens were divided into two groups: Group A and Group B. Provisional restorations made with autopolymerizing resin were luted to dentin surface with zinc oxide eugenol in Group A and with freegenol cement in Group B. All specimens were stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24 hrs and provisional cements were mechanically removed with explorer and rinsed with water and cleansed using various methods (Control-air-water spray, Pumice prophylaxis, Ultrasonic scaler with 0.2% Chlorhexidine gluconate, 17% EDTA). Contact angle measurements were performed to assess wettability of various cleansing agents using the ADSA-CD technique. Bond strength of a resin luting agent bonded to the cleansed surface was assessed using Instron testing machine and the mode of failure noted. SEM was done to assess the surface cleanliness. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance with Tukey HSD tests (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. Specimens treated with EDTA showed the highest shear bond strength and the lowest contact angle for both groups. SEM showed that EDTA was the most effective solution to remove the smear layer. Also, mode of failure seen was predominantly cohesive for both EDTA and pumice prophylaxis. CONCLUSION. EDTA was the most effective dentin cleansing agent among the compared groups.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible efficacy of Nd-YAG laser as a dentin conditioner by observing the laser irradiation dentin surface under scanning electron micrograph and measuring shear bond strength of restored light-cured glass ionomer mold. Fifty intact premolars were prepared for shear bond strength tests. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups as follows; Group I. no treatment Group II. 10% poly acrylic acid, 20 sec Group III. laser treatment 2 w, 20 Hz, 2 sec Group IV. laser treatment 2 w, 20 Hz, 5 sec Group V. laser treatment 2 w, 20 Hz, 10 sec Samples of each group were restored with light-cured glass ionomer cement after dentin conditioning and then measuring the shear bond strength of each specimen were measured using universal testing machine. Additional ten premolars were prepared for SEM analysis The result from the this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Shear bond strength of polyacrylic acid-treated group (II) was significantly higher than other groups (p<0.05). 2. No statistically significant difference could be found between three laser-treated groups (III, IV, V) in shear bond strength(p>0.05) 3. According to the result of observation under SEM, Polyacrylic acid was shown to have removed the smear layer effectively and opened the dentinal tubules, whereas the laser has produced the irregular surface mainly composed of melted and fused structure. The microcracks found in laser-treated groups increased in number with irradiation time and formed the regular mesh-type in 10 sec-irradiation group. 4. The ultrastructural change of dentin surface created by laser irradiation was found to the improper for bonding of the glass ionomer restorative materials. And the lower shear bond strength of laser irradiated group might have been due to the failure to form the suit able dentin surface for the glass ionomer to penetrated into and form the proper micromechanical retention.
The formation of hydrophilic surface based on polymers has received great attention due to the anti-adhesion of bacteria on solid substrates. Anti-adhesion coatings are aimed at suppressing the initial step of biofilm formation via non-cytotoxic mechanisms, and surfaces applied hydrophilic or ionic polymers showed the anti-adhesion effect for bioentities, such as proteins and bacteria. This is attributed to the formation of surface barrier from hydration layers, repulsions and osmotic stresses from polymer brushes, and electrostatic interactions between ionic polymers and cell surfaces. The antifouling polymer coating is usually fabricated by the grafting method through the bonding with functional groups on surfaces and the deposition method utilizing biomimetic anchors. This mini-review is a summary of representative antifouling polymers, coating strategies, and antibacterial efficacy. Furthermore, we will discuss consideration on the large area surface coating for application to public facilities and industry.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate Emblica officinalis (Indian gooseberry or amla) as an acid etchant and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor, and to compare its effect on the microshear bond strength of composite resin with orthophosphoric acid (OPA) and 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) as an acid etchant and MMP inhibitor, respectively. Materials and Methods: The etching effect and MMP-inhibiting action of amla on dentin samples were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and gelatin zymography, respectively. Dentinal slabs (3 mm thick) from 80 extracted human molars were divided into 10 and 20 samples to form 2 control groups and 3 experimental groups. Groups 1, 2, and 4 were etched with OPA and groups 3 and 5 with amla juice. An MMP inhibitor was then applied: CHX for group 2 and amla extract for groups 4 and 5. Groups 1 and 3 received no MMP inhibitor. All specimens received a standardized bonding protocol and composite resin build-up, and were subjected to microshear bond strength testing. The force at which the fracture occurred was recorded and statistically analyzed. Results: Amla juice had a similar etching effect as a self-etch adhesive in SEM and 100% amla extract was found to inhibit MMP-9 by gelatin zymography. The microshear bond strength values of amla were lower than those obtained for OPA and CHX, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Amla has a promising role as an acid etchant and MMP inhibitor, but further studies are necessary to substantiate its efficacy.

This research aims to assess the flexural bonding efficacy of polymer-cement composites(PCCs) in mending cracks within reinforced concrete(RC) structures. The study involved infilling PCCs into cement mortar cracks of varying dimensions, followed by evaluations of enhancements in flexural adhesion and strength. The findings indicate that the flexural bond performance of PCCs in crack repair is influenced by the cement type, polymer dispersion, and the polymer-to-binder ratio. Specifically, the use of ultra-high early strength cement combined with silica fume resulted in an up to 19.0% improvement in flexural bond strength compared to the application of ordinary Portland cement with silica fume. It was observed that the augmentation in flexural strength of cement mortar filled with PCCs was significantly more dependent on the depth of the crack rather than the width. Furthermore, PCCs not only acted as repair agents but also as reinforcement materials, enhancing the flexural strength to a certain extent. Consequently, this study concludes that PCCs formulated with ultra-high early strength cement, various polymer dispersions, silica fume, and a high polymer-to-binder ratio ranging from 60% to 80% are highly effective as maintenance materials for crack filling in practical settings.
