  • Objective: Hapkok(L14) and Taechung(Liv3) are acupuncture points located on both sides of each foot and hand of the human body. These two points are called sakwan points. Matching these acupuncture points have a significant reason in pints of not only regulating the circulation of Yin-Yang as a source point of each meridian, but also playing a basic role of twelve meridian by controlling circulation of ki and blood in the whole body. There are already related documents and studies on stimulating sakwan points. Since those papers mostly studied on either hapkook or taechung, we came to have a doubt of stimulation the two point at the same time when an unbalance of Yin-Yang and ki-blood appears. Accordingly, we got to investigate how thermogram of body changes after applying an acupuncture on sakwan points. Our study is as follows ; Method : Our study was performed on 30 normal cases(M:F=17:13) with no past history to observe the effects of the acupuncture. We measured temperature of abdomen and the back of both hands by D.I.T.I(Digital infrared Thermographic Imaging) before and after acupuncture on sakwan points. Results and Conclusions: The thermographic change on abdomen was $0.51{\pm}0.71^{\circ}C$. Temperature of abdomen after acupuncture was higher than before acupuncture with high validity(p<0.01). And the thermographic changes on the back of both hands were right hand $0.54{\pm}1.17^{\circ}C$, left hand $0.56{\pm}1.28^{\circ}C$. Temperature on the back of both hands after acupuncture was higher than before acupuncture, but the difference between them had little validity(p<0.01). In addition, we found that it doesn't necessarily follow that the thermographic changes on abdomen and back of both hands after acupuncture on sakwan points happen concurrently.

  • The actual clothing conditions were surveyed to diagnose clothing condition of Korean female in the view point of the adaptation to the thermal environment according to seasonal changes. Then, clothing microclimate, physiological responses, and subjective sensation were investigated through wearing trials on human body in climatic chamber based on the results from the survey. Factors to evaluate validity of clothing condition were clothing weight, clothing microclimate, physiological response of human body, and subjective sensation. The results were as follows: 1. Clothing weight per body surface area of the season was $856g/m^{2}$, $439g/m^{2}$ in summer, $630g/m^{2}$ in fall, and $1184g/m^{2}$ in winter. Cold - resistance of Korean female in office was superior to Japanese, inferior to residents of rural areas of Korea, and similar to male in office. However, in heat - resistance, female in office was inferior to residents of rural areas of Korea. 2. In spring, fall, winter, clothing microclimate temperature was a little higher than that in summer. Therefore, it was not a desirable wearing condition even though the clothing microclimate was comfortable zone. 3. Mean skin temperature of female in office was including within the range of Winslow's comfortable zone, but the range of comfortable zone in mean skin temperature of female was more narrow than Winslow's. Thus, it has problem for female to adaptation to thermal environment.

  • Global human activities associated with the use of fossil fuels have aggravated climate change, increasing air temperature. Consequently, climate change has the potential to alter surface water temperature with significant impacts on biogeochemical cycling and ecosystems in natural water body. In this study, we examined temporal trends on historical records of surface water temperature, and investigated the air temperature/water temperature relationship and the potential water temperature change from an air temperature scenario developed with regional climate model. Although the temporal trends of water temperature are highly variable site-by-site, surface water temperature was highly dependent on air temperature, and has increased significantly in some sub-watersheds over the last two decades. The results presented here demonstrate that water temperature changes are expected to be slightly higher in river system than reservoir systems and more significant during winter than summer for both river and reservoir system. Projected change of surface water temperature will likely increase $1.06^{\circ}C$ for rivers and $0.95^{\circ}C$ for reservoirs during the period 2008 to 2050. Given the potential climatic changes, every $1^{\circ}C$ increase in water temperature could cause dissolved oxygen levels to fall every 0.206 ppm.

  • Background : This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of wild ginseng herbal acupuncture developed for the intravenous use. Healthy male and female volunteers(n=57) went through Randomized Control Trials(RCT). Methods : For those who are under a medication due to common cold or other illnesses were excluded in the primary stage and the subjects with possible abnormalities in the pre-screening process were also excluded in the secondary stage. Then the examination groups were determined by random sampling. Experiment groups were divided into Normal saline injection group(control group), cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture group(experiment group 1) and natural wild ginseng herbal acupuncture group(experiment group 2) Blood tension, body temperature, pulse, and other criteria were measured and analyzed. Results : 1. Intravenous injection of cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture and natural wild ginseng herbal acupuncture didn't cause significant changes in the blood tension, pulse, body temperature, and etc. 2. No significant differences were witnessed in CBC, ESR, biochemistry of blood test and UA between the experiment groups. 3. No significant changes were noted in the thermography before and after the test in the experiment groups. 4. Some of the common physical changes occurring during and after the administration were fatigue, chest distension, and headache in all of the experiment groups. 5. Comparing general condition after one week from the termination of administration, the control group showed worst condition while as the natural wild ginseng herbal acupuncture group displayed best condition. Conclusion : From the above results, we can carefully deduce that the intravenous injection of the wild ginseng herbal acupuncture didn't show significant differences compared to injection of the normal saline. We can infer it is safe on the human body and further studies and reports must be followed.

  • The changes of concentration of serum haptoglobin, body temperature, hematological result and antibody titers were compared in pigs given intravenously injection of E rhusiopathiae and control pigs. Pigs administered with E rhusiopathiae injections showed acute septicemia and arthritis. Also, statistically significant changes observed in the total white cell counts and body temperature. An increased haptoglobin concentration in serum was detected after E rhusiopathiae infection, but not during antibiotics treatment. The results indicated that measurement of the concentration of serum haptoglobin may be useful in the early diagnosis of infectious disease, such as Erysipelas.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the variation of regional skin temperature with thermography during exercise. Seven men completed 82-min trials which consisted of rest, exercise of $VO_2$ max 60% and recovery period at $30{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $60{\pm}5%RH$. Changes in skin temperature due to physical activity varied, depending region of the body. The skin temperature of the chest was significantly lowered and that of the back was significantly increased after exercise period(p < 0.05). There were significant negative relationship between the skin temperature of the chest and thermal comfort sensation, and positive relationship between skin temperature of the back and thermal comfort sensation(p < 0.05). It would be better to keep the chest warm, and the back cool during exercise. The skin temperature changed differently on body site due to exercise, and it was influenced by blood flow, sweating and air movement. This study would be meaningful in that the change of regional skin temperature during exercise was investigated consecutively with thermography. In further study, it would be more realistic to measure physiological response with functional sportswear which applies different functional fabric based on skin temperature.

  • The odor theory(氣味論) has been defined as the Nature(氣) and the Taste(味) of traditional herbal medicine to find the logic in treatment of various diseases by them. There is a strong possibility these Natures of the drug can be categorized according to yin(陰) and yang(陽). To understand the Hot and the Cold Natures of traditional herbal drugs in scientific approaches, changes in skin, rectal temperature of rats have been measured at 0, 30, 60, 90 min after a 5, 10, 20g/Kg oral administration each of Coptidis Rizoma(Ranunculaceae, Coptis chinesis, $F_{RANCH}$), Aconiti Lateralis Preparata Radix(Ranunculaceae, Aconitum carmichaeli $D_{EBX}$). From this study, we obtained as follows. 1. We can categorize the four Natures of drug according to yin(陰) - Cool and Cold Natures and yang(陽) - Warm and Hot Natures. 2. The relation between the four Natures of drug and the changes of body temperature can be studied as the considertion of the dosage and the preparation of crude medicines. 3. Herbs containing toxicant should be studied carefully without the side effects.
