  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of alcohol administration on selenium concentration and cell morphology in tissurs of rats fed with the different levels of selenium (Se) and vitamin E. Seventy two male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighing about 58~62g were divided into 12 groups. The dietary Se levels were 0mg(L-), 0.4mg(C-) and 10mg(H-), and the dietary vitamin E levels were 0mg(-L) and 150mg(-C) per kg diet, respectively. Alcohol-adminstrated groups(--A) received the triple distilled potable water solution containing 10% of ethanol from the 3rd week of experimental periods. The obtained experimental results are summarized as follows. Se concentration in blood and urine made difference in accordance with Se level in diet and tended to be low in alcohol administrated groups. Se concentration in liver and kidney was also directly proportional to the dietary Se level, and it tended to be low in each alcohol group, but Se concentration in kidney tended to be increased by alcohol administration. Myocardium in rats showed lysosome increasing, fat droplet, mitochondrial swelling, and in particular, bad intracellular edema, in H-group fed with high Se and in L-group with low Se. It also showed such phenomena in the alcohol administrated group. In HC-group fed with excessive Se and normal vitamin E. there appeared no noticeable change in liver tissue. However, in the alcohol administrated HCA-group, there came out fat droplet. Especially, in the alcohol administrated LLA-group, not fed with sufficient Se and vitamin, E, there were found lysosome increasing and a number of fat droplet.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the antifatigue effect of SM-2000 on fatigued and stressed people. Methods : This study was carried out on 23 healthy people who have fatigue and stress. 11 people as the mentally-stressed group were examined by subjective symptoms of fatigue and blood cortisol test. They drank SM-2000 for seven days. SM-2000 was made up herbs which were used for fatigue. After that they were again examined by subjective symptoms of fatigue and blood cortisol test. 12 people as the physically-fatigued group were examined with fatigue biomarkers and exercise test. They also drank SM-2000 for seven days. After that they were again examined with fatigue biomarkers and exercise test. Results : Cortisol level, subjective symptoms of fatigue scores and physical, mental, and neuro-sensory symptoms of fatigue scores after drinking SM-2000 were not significantly increased compared with before drinking SM-2000 in the mental stressed group. SM-2000 significantly decreased lactate, glucose, and phosphorous levels, and running time after drinking SM-2000 was significantly suppressed compared with before drinking SM-2000 in the physically-fatigued group. Conclusions : On the basis of these results, SM-2000 had a clinical antifatigue effect in physically-fatigued people.

  • Objectives: The posthysterectomy syndrome is sequela which occurred after hysterectomy. Even though hysterectomy is one of common surgery in gynecologic operation, the complications of surgery easily occurred. The purpose of this study is to report the effect of traditional Korean medicine on posthysterectomy syndrome, especially anemia. Methods: The patient having treated with hospital management, from January 19th in 2018 until Feburary 8th in 2018, participated. Her chief complaint was dizziness which occurred after hysterectomy. We diagnosed her as anemia based on symptoms and blood test result. We treated the patient with herbal medicine, moxibustion and iron pills. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated with visual analogue scale (VAS) and complete blood cell count. Results: During hospitalization period, the symptoms including dizziness, fatigue, headache, neck pain, abdominal pain were reduced. After discharging, we identified that the level of hemoglobin was normalized. Conclusions: To recover from posthysterectomy syndrome, Korean medicine treatment is considered to be effective.

  • The Asiatic black bear, Ursus thibetanus, is among the most threatened or endangered species in Asia. For its conservation and management, sex identification of U. thibetanus using non-invasive samples (e.g., hair and/or feces) is potentially valuable. In this study, a non-invasive molecular method for sex identification of U. thibetanus samples collected from various countries was first utilized, and it was based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the amelogenin gene via PCRs. Thirty-three bear DNA samples, extracted not only from blood (n=9) but also from hair (n=18) and feces (n=6), were used. We performed sex-specific PCR amplifications of the amelogenin gene using a primer set, SE47 and SE48. The primer set could successfully amplify a single X-specific band for females and both X- and Y-specific bands for males from all blood (100%) and hair (100%) samples. In addition, the primer set could distinguish the sex of bears in four out of a total of six fecal samples (approximately 67%). This study's findings suggest that this molecular method can be applied to sex identification of Asiatic black bears from various Asian regions using non-invasive samples, such as hair and feces.

  • In most of the previous studies, invasive and discrete techniques have been used to monitor the healing process of the gingival graft. However, Laser Doppler Flowmetry(LDF, floLAB(R), Moor Instruments Ltd., England) is a non-invasive technique for measurement of blood flow in the tissue and also allows continuous monitoring. Thus, we tested the usefulness of LDF in monitoring the healing process of free gingival graft at gingival recession. Eleven gingival graft site of 7 patients, including 5 males and 2 females, aged between 21 and 41 years (mean age 28.5) were monitored for the blood flow. The blood flow in gingival graft at coronal site, central site, apical site, mesial site and distal site was measured using LDF. Blood flow was measured at 1- week, 2- week, 3- week and 4- week after gingival graft surgery from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Time-course of the healing process was evaluated by statistical analysis using repeated ANOVA and Duncan test. The results were as follows : (1) Blood flow stayed increased for 2 weeks, and then, it was a tendency to decrease. (2) The blood flow at distal site had always higher than mesial site during the measuring periods. (3) The blood flow was high orderly after 1 week ; most coronal site, most apical site, central site. But that was high orderly after 2 week, 3 week, 4 week ; most coronal site, central site, most apical site. In conclusion, LDF was a useful and clinically adaptable method to monitor wound healing process. Our study suggested that it was important to protect surgical site to promote initial wound healing.

  • In East-South Asia it has been known that Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng) increases blood pressure, whereas American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius) doesn't. This study was designed to find out if Korean ginseng really could increase blood pressure comparing with American ginseng. Double-blind randomized controlled trials on blood pressure and pulse rate of Korean ginseng and American ginseng in Koreans and Chineses was performed. There was no significant difference on blood pressure and pulse rate between Korean ginseng and American ginseng in both Koreans and Chineses by repeated-measures ANOVA. It was revealed that Korean ginseng does not increase blood pressure. Maybe the concept that Korean ginseng increases blood pressure is concerned with commercial interests dealing with American Ginseng.
