The underground parts of foso rugoso(Rosaceae) , which have been used as an antidiabetic in the folk medicines of Korea, lowered the blood pressure inthe normal rat . And from the chloroform soluble fraction, euscaphic acid wasisolated with $\beta$ -sitosterol and campesterol .
The present study examined that in vivo/vitro test is investigated in normotensive sham-operated rats(NSR) and aldosterone-analogue deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats(ADHR) and that the antiliypertensive effect was induced by silver spike point(SSP) electrical stimulation at meridian points(CV-3, -4, Ki-12, SP-6, LR-3, BL-25, -28, -32, -52), specifically, such as aldosterone in 24 hour urine analysis from normal volunteer. The heart weight, the tickness of vascular wall, collagen fiber and the systolic blood pressure were significantly increased in ADHR than that in NSR. The required time of PSS-induced resting tone and the phosphorylation of stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase(SAPK/JNK) were significantly increased in ADHR than that in NSR. However, the Kv currents were significantly decreased in ADHR than that in NSR. The current of 1 Hz continue type of SSP electrical stimulation significantly decreased in excretion of urine aldosterone from normal volunteer. These results suggest that the development of aldosterone analogue-induced hypertension is associated with changed heart weight, content of collagen fiber, tickness of vascular wall, blood pressure, resting tone, voltage-dependent K+ current(Kv) and phosphorylation of SAPK/JNK, which directly affects blood pressure. Therefore the hypertension is a risk factor on cerebrovascular disease. Moreover, These results suggest that the SSP electrical stimulation, especially current of 1 Hz continue type, significantly regulates excretion of urine aldosterone from volunteer.

Ginseng, the Korean medicinal radix, has been widely used in the Chinese medicine as well as in the folk remedies for many centuries. It is claimed from experience that ginseng exerts multiple therapeutic effects in a large variety of disorders. Despite of its popularity, the chemical analysis and pharmacological study of ginseng are not firmly established. Although there are some scattered reports of ginseng effects on blood pressure, there are few reports on hypertension especially. Recently, Lee & Cho (1971) reported that the administration of ginseng significantly supresses the production of renal hypertension. This study was undertaken to reevaluate the effect of ginseng on renal hypertension and to determine whether ginseng also supresses on neurogenic hypertension, and to clarify the mechanism of this antihypertensive effect. Male rats, weighing around 180 gm on an average were used. Renal hypertension was induced by Grollman's method under general anesthesia with 35mg/kg of pentobarbital sodium. Ginseng effect on blood pressure was observed on normal, renal hypertensive and neurogenic hypertensive rats respectively. Ginseng alcohol extract (40mg/kg) was administered daily subcutaneously from 3 days prior to producing hypertension. And in renal hypertensive rats, the effects of histamine and Avil on blood pressure were also observed. Histamine (0.05mg/kg) and Avil (0.025mg/kg) were also administered daily I.M. from 3 days prior to kidney-8-ligature. The results of the experiments are as follows: 1) No significant difference was observed in blood pressure between the normotensive control and ginseng-treated normotensive rats. 2) In renal hypertensive control, the mean blood pressure already was significantly elevated on 15th day and gradually elevated. The administration of ginseng significantly supresses the production of renal hypertension from 30th day as compared with control rats. 3) The mean blood pressure in neurogenic hypertensive control was average 143.1 mmHg on 7th day. On the other hand, in ginseng treated-neurogenic hypertensive rats, the mean blood pressure was average 125.5mmHg. The administration of ginseng significantly supresses the production of neurogenic hypertension as compared with control rats. 4) In renal hypertensive rats, the administration of histamine and Avil did not differ with control rats. 5) In ginseng-treated renal hypertensive rats, cholesterol contents of plasma, adrenal, kidney and spleen were slightly decreased.
This study was carried out on 178 bus drivers in the Masan area to investigate their health and nutritional status. THe nutritional status of the subjects was surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire, and blood analyses were conducted through annual health examinations in June, 1999. The results were as fellows: About 51% were classified as normal, 33% as health-concerned, and 17% as disease-suspected. The levels of total seam cholesterol were significantly higher in the over 20 year group (194.64 $\pm$ 41.42 mg/dl) than in the under 10 year group (175,00 $\pm$ 31.33 mg/dl) with respect to the length of their driving careers. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was significantly higher in the 51 to 60 age group than in the other groups (p < 0.05) . The total seam cholesterol increased with increasing age (p < 0.001), and SBP increased with increasing Body Mass Index (BMI) (p < 0.001). Diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (p < 0.01), hemoglobin (p < 0.05) and glutamate-pyruvate-aminotransferase (GPT) (p < 0.05) were significantly higher in the BMI of over 20, than in the BMI under 20. The GPT was significantly higher in the BMI over 25 than in the BMI under 25. In The mean daily energy intake was 1912.7 kcal (76.5% of the RDA) ultra the protein intake was 74.3 g (106.2% or the RDA). Compared with the recommended allowance, the energy, calcium, thiamin, and riboflavin intakes were below, and the Fe, vitamin A, vitamin C intakes were above the Korean RDA. The average carbohydrate, protein, fat ratio of energy intake was 66 : 15 : 19, respectively. The length of their driving careers had a positive correlation with their ages and total serum cholesterol levels, and their ages had a positive correlation with their blood pressures, total seam cholesterol and hemoglobin levels and BMI. Their BMI had a positive correlation with their ages, blood pressures, total serum cholesterol, hemoglobin, GPT and GOT levels. The results of this study indicate that bus drivers needed regular exercise, and control of their body weights to prevent chronic diseases, and that their health status should be monitored as the length of their driving careers and ages increase.
The purpose of this study is to research the effects of acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 and to determine the mechanism of action of acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 by measuring the changes of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in normal rats. To determine the mechanism of action of acupuncturing BL40 and ST36, pretreatment with indomethacine and methylene blue was performed. Acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 significantly increased rCBF, and the increased rCBF by acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with indomethacin (1 mg/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, and methylene blue($10{\mu}g/kg$, i.p.), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase. Acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 decreased MABP, and decreased MABP by acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 was not changed by pretreatment with indomethacin and methylene blue. This result suggested that acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 might significantly increase rCBF by dilating arterial diameter and mechanism of acupuncturing BL40 and ST36 might be mediated by cyclooxygenase and guanylate cyclase.
Coptis rhizoma had been applied in the chines medicine as well as in the folk remidies and it was advocated that coptis rhizoma exerts good therapeutic effect in some case of alimentary disorders and other hypotensive ailments. However the basic pharmacology and the mechanism of hypotensive action are not clear. This experiment was carried out in order to reevaluate the pharmacology, especially hypotensive action of coptis rhizoma and to clarify the mechanism of action, in the rabbits and also $LD_{50}$ of coptis rhizoma was determined using mice as experimental animals. The results of the experiment were as follows. 1) $LD_{50}$ to the mice was 69 mg/kg. 2) Blood pressure manifested gradual responses by the fall of -17, -26, -62 mmHg in proportion to the administration of 3, 5, 10 mg/kg of coptis rhizoma extract respectively. 3) No significant differance was observed in heart rate between the normal control group and the coptis rhizoma extract treated group. 4) Administration of coptis rhizoma extract 5 mg/kg to the rabbit pretreated with atropine or avil did not show any significant difference in the blood pressure compared with that of control group. 5) In the rabbit pretreated with coptis rhizoma extract 5mg/kg, the hypotensive effect of epinephrine was significantly inhibited in comparison with that of normal rabbit.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the health behaviors by a risk level of metabolic syndrome (MS) among petty merchants in traditional markets. Methods: The data were collected through questionnaires and physical examination on abdominal circumstance, triglyceride, HDL, blood pressure, and FBS of 177 subjects in S city, Korea. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test (or fisher's exact test) and ANOVA using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The prevalence of MS was 15.8%, and risk group was 72.9%. The abdominal circumstance and triglyceride levels were higher in MS group than those of the risk group and normal group. The HDL and systolic blood pressure levels were also higher in MS group than those of the normal group. Conclusion: The prevalence of MS and risk groups was high among petty merchants in traditional markets. However, these merchants did not practice health behaviors nor take institutional health management benefit. Therefore, governmental level community based health management services are requested for them.
Dietary and other factors affecting serum lipid levels of 103 rural women aged 30-76 years were assessed. Data for dietary intakes were obtained by 24-hour recall method. Body weight, height and blood pressure were measured and BMI was calculated from the anthropometric data. Serum samples were collected and analyzed for TG and lipoprotein fractions. Relation of the factors with serum lipid concentration was analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient(r). The results were summarized as follows: The weight, hight and BMI of the subjects were 56.8kg, 152.4cm and 24.5k/==, respectively. 31.8% of the subjects under 50 years of age($\leq$49yr group) and 61.0% of the subjects from 50 years up(==50yr group) were classified as hyperlipidemia. Most of the subjects had normal blood pressure but 8.5% were hypertensive. Total food intake of hyperlipidemic subjects was more than those of normal subjects in both age groups. Nutrients intake also tended to be higher in hyperlipidemic subjects of $\geq$50yr group. Intake of some foods like nuts, milk, or meat affected serum lipid profile even though the effects was somewhat different between two age groups. Body weight was positively related with serum TG and VLDL-cholesterol in $\leq$49yr group, and body weight as well as height and BMI affected serum lipid level in $\geq$50yr group. In summarization, it appeared that hyperlipidemia was a serious health problem in rural women. Hypertriglyceridemia due to sharp increase after 50 years old was remarkable and further research should be performed to determine the related factors in the near future.
Objectives : This experimental study was designed to investigate the effects of Lumbricus extract (LE) on the changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in normal rats, and further to determine the mechanism of action of LE. Methods : The changes of rCBF were observed by Laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and the changes of MABP were recorded by a data acquisition system assembled with MacLab and Macintosh. Results : LE significantly increased rCBF in a high dosage(10.0 mg/kg, i.p), but MABP was somewhat increased as compared with baseline. This result suggests that LE significantly increased rCBF by dilating pial arterial diameter. Increase of LE-induced rCBF was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with indomethacin (1 mg/kg, i.p), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, but was not significantly inhibited by pretreatment with methylene blue ($10{\mu}g/kg$, i.p), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase. Conclusions : LE increased rCBF by dilating pial arterial diameter, and the action of this response was mediated by cyclooxygenase.
