A Case Study on Running a Game-based Programming Class for Lower Grades (저학년을 위한 게임 기반 프로그래밍 수업 운영 사례 연구)

  • Most of the existing game-based education programmes for lower grades are simple block-coding studies, and there is a lack of examples of programming-intensive classes. In this study, we implemented a Minecraft-based Python coding fundamentals class for 3 classes at a local elementary school during a 2-week school holiday. The learning programme was reorganised from the standard learning programme on the official website, such as building quests through LAN-PARTY and self-scripting in-game, to improve class interest and motivation. In addition, we analysed the satisfaction and preferences of the class topics through a survey, and obtained meaningful results for future educational program development. This study is significant as a basic research for the design and development of game-based educational programmes for all age groups.

  • Teaching programming skills is not only required for computer related departments but through the area of engineering and natural science. Moreover recently teaching programming skill is emphasized in software education for primary schools and secondary schools. Since programming ability is considered an essencial element of national competitiveness, we need programming learning system which alleviates the difficulty. We implemented Blockly webc Programming Convergent Learning System which is based on the graphic tools called Blockly by Google. Inside system problem sets for the programming beginners are embedded in the system. These problem sets are gone under more than 20 years verification and these problem sets may be used to help beginning programmers escape novice coder in short time. Blockly webc Programming Convergent Learning System together with already developed Simple Visual Language2 Programming Learning System is expected to play an important role as a programming learning system for the beginners.

App Inventor 2 As a Tool for Enhancement of Computational Thinking (Computational Thinking 향상 도구로서의 App Inventor 2)

  • MIT App Inventor 2, much like the other block-based programming languages such as Scratch and Alice, is a useful tool that can be utilized to improve the computational thinking skills for students. The coding and the execution of program are done mainly on the computer in Scratch programming, but in App Inventor 2 programming, the students can execute the program and get immediate feedback on the smart-phone in the middle of the programming. Therefore, we can expect better enhanced learning effect. In this study, it has been claimed that the learning of App Inventor2 can strengthen the computational thinking skills of our students by extracting four core concepts of the computational thinking and then showing how these concepts are applied through the learning of App Inventor 2.

Development of Game Programming Education Model 4E for Pre-Service Teachers (예비교사를 위한 게임 프로그래밍 교육모델 4E 개발)

  • Programming education generally includes problem analysis process, automation through algorithms and programming, and generalization process. It is a good software education method for students in improving computing thinking. However, it was found that beginners had difficulties in understanding instruction usage, writing algorithms, and implementing programming. In this study, we developed a game programming education model and curriculum for programming education of pre-service teachers. The 4E model consisted of empathy, exploration, engagement and evaluation. In addition, it is configured to learn game core elements and core command blocks by each stage. To help the pre-service teachers understand the use of various programming blocks, a three-step teaching and learning method was presented, consisting of example learning, self-game creation, and team-based projects. As a result of applying and verifying the curriculum for 15 weeks, it showed significant results in the 4E model and pre-service teachers' perception of block programming competence and the level of computational thinking on the submitted game project results was also high.

Development of Python Education Program for Block Coding Learners (블록코딩 선행학습자를 위한 Python 교육 프로그램 개발)

  • In this study we have developed a Python education program that can be applied to students who have studied block-based coding. We have developed a Python education program based on the extracted the learners' level of block-based coding by analyzing the programs and the textbooks. We extracted the grammar of the block-based coding and constructed the curriculum. Then, the Python education program was composed by 16 hours. After reviewing the appropriateness of the education program through expert validation, it was concluded that the developed Python education program is suitable for applying to learners of block-based coding. We expect that proposed program will be effectively applied as basic resources to learn script coding in class.

  • Industrial robots have been usually controlled using text-based programming languages provided by each manufacturer with its button-based TP(Teaching Pendent) terminal. Unfortunately, when we consider that people who manipulate TPs in manufacturing sites are mostly unskilled with no background knowledge about computer programming, these text-based programming languages using button-based interaction on manufacturing sites are too difficult for them to learn and use. In order to overcome the weaknesses of the text-based programming language, we propose a visual programming language that can be easily used on gesture-enabled devices. Especially, in our visual programming environment, each command is represented as a block and robots are controlled by stacking those blocks using drag-and-drop gestures, which is easily learnable even by beginners. In this paper, we utilize a widely-spread device, Tablet PC as the gesture-enabled TP. Considering that Tablet PC has limited display space in contrast to PC environments, we designed different kinds of sets of command blocks and conducted user tests. Based on the experiment results, we propose an effective set of command blocks for Tablet PC environment.

  • Artificial intelligence has begun to be used in various parts of our lives, and recently its sphere has been expanding. However, students tend to find it difficult to recognize artificial intelligence technology because education on artificial intelligence is not being conducted on elementary school students. This paper examined the teaching programming language and artificial intelligence teaching methods, and looked at the changes in students' attitudes toward artificial intelligence technology by conducting education on artificial intelligence. To this end, education on block-type programming language-based artificial intelligence technology was provided to students' level. And we looked at students' attitudes toward artificial intelligence technology through a single group pre-postmortem. As a result, it brought about significant improvements in interest in artificial intelligence, possible access to artificial intelligence technology and the need for education on artificial intelligence technology in schools.

  • Though programming education has been stressed recently, the elementary, middle, and high school students are having trouble in programming education. Most programming environments for them are based on block coding, which hinders them from moving to text coding. The traditional PC environment has also troubles such as maintenance problems. In this situation, mobile applications can be considered as alternative programming environments. This paper addresses the design and implementation of coding applications for mobile devices. As a prototype, a Scheme interpreter mobile app is proposed, where Scheme is used for programming courses at MIT since it supports multi-paradigm programming. The implementation has the advantage of not consuming the network bandwidth since it is designed as a standalone application. According to the benchmark result, the execution time on Android devices, relative to that on a desktop, was 131% for the Derivative and 157% for the Tak. Further, the maximum execution times for the benchmark programs on the Android device were 19.8ms for the Derivative and 131.15ms for the Tak benchmark. This confirms that when selecting an Android device for programming education purposes, there are no significant constraints for training.

  • In this paper, we construct inequivalent Hadamard matrices based on several new and old full orthogonal designs, using circulant and symmetric block matrices. Not all orthogonal designs produce inequivalent Hadamard matrices, because the corresponding systems of equations do not possess solutions. The systems of equations arising when we search for inequivalent Hadamard matrices from full orthogonal designs using circulant and symmetric block matrices, can be concisely described using the periodic autocorrelation function of the generators of the block matrices. We use Maple, Magma, C and Unix tools to find many new inequivalent Hadamard matrices.

  • Based on non-completely hybrid flow line scheduling of panel block in shipbuilding, several uncertain factors influencing the problem were analyzed in a real environment, and a nonlinear integer programming model was built for each sub-scheduling problem. To narrow the difference between theory and application, rolling horizon and rescheduling methods are proposed. Moreover, with respect to the uncertainty of processing time, arriving time and due time, we take the minimizing of the early and delayed delivery costs as the objective, and establish an evaluation with a global penalty function. Finally, numerical experiments and a simulation analysis were undertaken to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and algorithm.
