Accurate evaluation of the slope stability by assuming failure block as the entire slope is considered to be apposite for the small scale slope, whereas it is not the case for the large scale slope. Hence, appropriate estimation of a failure block size is required since the safety factor and the joint strength parameters are the function of the failure block size. In this paper, the size of failure block was investigated by generating 3-dimensional rock joint system based on statistical data of joints obtained from research slope, such as joint orientation, spacing and 3-dimensional joint intensity. The result indicates that 33 potential failure blocks exist in research slope, as large as 1.4 meters at least and 38.7 meters at most, and average block height is 15.2 meters. In addition, the data obtained from 3 dimensional joint system were directly applicable to the probability analysis and 2 and 3 dimensional discontinuity analysis.
Toppling failure of a slope is defined as failure behavior accompanying the rotation of rock block which is different from other failure such as sliding along with discontinuities and so on. It generally occurs in the region that discontinuities were developed with inverse dip direction to a slope and it could play a critical role in judging stability of slope. In this study, the stability evaluation was performed about toppling failure on a jointed road cut-slope. To check the deformation behavior, numerical analysis is widely used. However common analysis programs are based on continuum model. Recently, many methods that discontinuity properties can be considered in continuum analysis are suggested. In this study, numerical analysis based on FEM(Finite Element Method) was performed using interface element applied in heterogeneous boundary to simulate effects of discontinuities.

In order to reduce blocking artifacts in inter-frame coded images, we propose a new image restoration algorithm, which directly processes differential images before reconstruction. We note that blocking artifact in inter-frame coded images is caused by both 8$\times$8 DCT and 16$\times$16 macroblock based motion compensation, while that of intra-coded images is caused by 8$\times$8 DCT only. According to the observation, we Propose a new degradation model for differential images and the corresponding restoration algorithm that utilizes additional constraints and convex sets for discontinuity inside blocks. The proposed restoration algorithm is a modified version of standard regularization that incorporate!; spatially adaptive lowpass filtering with consideration of edge directions by utilizing a part of DCT coefficients. Most of video coding standard adopt a hybrid structure of block-based motion compensation and block discrete cosine transform (BDCT). By this reason, blocking artifacts are occurred on both block boundary and block interior For more complete removal of both kinds of blocking artifacts, the restored differential image must satisfy two constraints, such as, directional discontinuities on block boundary and block interior Those constraints have been used for defining convex sets for restoring differential images.

Upsetting of non-circular blocks is characterized by the three-dimensional deformation with lateral sidewise spread as well as axial bulging along thickness. A kinematically admissible velocity field for the upsetting of prismatic or non-prismatic blocks is proposed which considers the different frictional conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of a billet. From the proposed velocity field the upper-bound load and the deformed configuration are determined by minimizing the total power consumption with respect to some chosen parameters. Experiments are carried out with annealed SM 15C steel billets at room temperature for different billet shapes and frictional conditions. The theoretical predictions both in the forging load and the deformed configurations are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental observations. Therefore, the velocity field proposed in this work can be used for the prediction of forging load and deformation in upsetting of prismatic or non-prismatic blocks, considering the different frictional conditions at two flat dies.
As the structure of broken rock mass is complex, with obvious discontinuity and anisotropy, it is generally necessary to reinforce broken rock mass using grouting in underground construction. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the mechanical properties of broken rock mass after grouting reinforcement with consideration of the characteristics of broken rock mass (i.e., degree of fragmentation and shape) and a range of reinforcement methods such as relative strength ratio between the broken rock mass and cement-based grout stone body (λ), and volumetric block proportion (VBP) representing the volumetric ratio of broken rock mass and the overall cement grout-broken rock mass mixture after the reinforcement. The experimental results show that the strength and deformation of the reinforced broken rock mass is largely determined by relative strength ratio (λ) and VBP. In addition, the enhancement in compressive strength by grouting is more obvious for broken rock mass with spherical shape under a relatively high strength ratio (e.g., λ=2.0), whereas the shape of rock mass has little influence when the strength ratio is low (e.g., λ=0.1). Importantly, the results indicate that columnar splitting failure and inclined shear failure are two typical failure modes of broken rock mass with grouting reinforcement.
The aim of the present study is to develop an elemental approach based on the differential quadrature method for free vibration analysis of cracked thin plate structures. For this purpose, the equations of motion are established using the classical plate theory. The well-known Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (GDQM) is utilized to discretize the governing equations on each computational subdomain or element. In this method, the differential terms of a quantity field at a specific computational point should be expressed in a series form of the related quantity at all other sampling points along the domain. However, the existence of any geometric discontinuity, such as a crack, in a computational domain causes some problems in the calculation of differential terms. In order to resolve this problem, the multi-block or elemental strategy is implemented to divide such geometry into several subdomains. By constructing the appropriate continuity conditions at each interface between adjacent elements and a crack tip, the whole discretized governing equations of the structure can be established. Therefore, the free vibration analysis of a cracked thin plate will be provided via the achieved eigenvalue problem. The obtained results show a good agreement in comparison with those found by finite element method.
The phenomenological evolution laws of damage can be defined either based on residual life or residual strength. The failure of a specimen can be defined immediately after or before fracture. The former is called in this paper by "failure defined by approach I" and the latter "failure defined by approach II." Usually at failure there is a discontinuity of loading variables and, because of this, damage at failure is discontinuous. Therefore the values of damage at failure by two different approaches are not the same. Based on this idea the sequence effects of the phenomenological evolution law of damage given by $dD/dN=g(D)f({\Phi})$ were studied. Thin-walled graphite/epoxy tubes consisting of four of $[{\pm}45]_s$ laminates were used for the experimental study of sequence effects and the effects of mean stress on fatigue life. It was found that the sequence effects in two step uniaxial fatigue for $[{\pm}45]_s$ graphite/epoxy tubular specimen showed that a high-low block loading sequence was less damaging than a low-high one.
In this paper an approach was described for determination of direction of sliding block in rock slopes containing planar non-persistent open joints. For this study, several gypsum blocks containing planar non-persistent open joints with dimensions of $15{\times}15{\times}15cm$ were build. The rock bridges occupy 45, 90 and $135cm^2$ of total shear surface ($225cm^2$), and their configuration in shear plane were different. From each model, two similar blocks were prepared and were subjected to shearing under normal stresses of 3.33 and $7.77kg/cm^{-2}$. Based on the change in the configuration of rock-bridges, a factor called the Effective Joint Coefficient (EJC) was formulated, that is the ratio of the effective joint surface that is in front of the rock-bridge and the total shear surface. In general, the failure pattern is influenced by the EJC while shear strength is closely related to the failure pattern. It is observed that the propagation of wing tensile cracks or shear cracks depends on the EJC and the coalescence of wing cracks or shear cracks dominates the eventual failure pattern and determines the peak shear load of the rock specimens. So the EJC is a key factor to determine the sliding direction in rock slopes containing planar non-persistent open joints.
The observational design and construction method in tunnels is becoming important recently. In many tunnels, enormous cost and time are consumed to cope with the failing or sliding of rock blocks, which could not be predicted because of the complexity of rock discontinuities. It is difficult to estimate the properties of rock masses before the construction. In this paper, a new observational design and construction method in tunnels are proposed, and then applied to the example of the very large cross section tunnel based on actual discontinuity information observed in situ. The items examined in developing a program for the new observational design and construction method are the following ones: generality, precision, high speed, and friendly usability. At the very large cross section tunnel, 7 key blocks were judged to be unstable because they could not be supported by standard supports. Supplementary supports were installed to these 7 key blocks before the excavation. It is possible to detect key blocks all along the tunnel exactly by using the numerical analysis program developed for the new observational design and construction method in the very large cross section tunnel. This computer simulation method with user-friendly interfaces can calculate not only the stability of key blocks but also the design of supplementary supports.
Open cut mining of limestone is generally considered to be more advantageous than underground mining in recovery, grade control, economics, and safety, but it causes substantial environmental pollutants such as ground vibration, noise, dust. It also changes ground surface and may destroy vegetation. The Halla limestone mine which lies adjacent to Baikdu mountains range is selected for a model study. To reduce environmental hazards, and to conserve original surface and woods, both open cut and underground mining methods must be adopted. In case of sub-level sloping. a unit block of 87m high, 70m wide, and 100∼l20m long is suggested with an estimated overall recovery of 42%. Some suggestions to reduce the environmental hazards are also included. The followings must be considered in determining the degree of fragmentation; the discontinuity conditions in the rock mass and the charge concentration both at the bottom and column of the hole. In addition to adopting a barrier wall for reducing environmental hazards, the probable production from underground mining is also discussed.
