  • Electric fans, which consist of axial blades, are operated by the induction motor. In this paper, the objective of this study is the performance improvement of the base model fan using the design optimization. In order to aerodynamic analysis, computational simulations are performed using commercial tool ANSYS-CFX ver. 14.5. And k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model is used for the CFD analysis. The design variables are set up as sweep and lean angles. Volumetric flow rate and torque of the fan blades are fixed to objective function. The optimized model is shown the increment of the volumetric flow rate and the reduction of the torque compared with the base model. The experimental procedure is followed KS C 9301. CFD results and experimental results are fairly well matched.

  • In this study, we confirmed the fact that air egress velocity of pressure differential system which is installed in vestibule of smokeproof stairway in domestic high-rise building becomes back-flow into the vestibule not into the livingroom when the doors open to escape in case of fire by actual measurement. It concerned that fire smoke inflow into the vestibule of smokeproof stairway. so, reflux symptoms were developing the condition does not occur by creating an area of $2m^2$ and a model. if it‘s area is less, airflow in upper area was severely reflux. in the case upward 45 gradient of supply damper’s angle of blade, The results that reflux symptoms include upper door but bottom has some reflux. also vestibule of smokeproof stairway‘s area of $4m^2$ in the living room door in the direction of the flow distributon was normal. if a vestibule of smokeproof stairway is smaller, it designed to be performance-based design should be.

  • An aerodynamic shape optimization technique has been developed for helicopter rotor blades in hover based on a continuous adjoint method on unstructured meshes. The Euler flow solver and the continuous adjoint sensitivity analysis were formulated on the rotating frame of reference for hovering rotor blades. In order to handle the repeated evaluation of the design cycle efficiently, the flow and adjoint solvers were parallelized using a domain decomposition strategy. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was adopted for the accurate capturing of the tip vortex. Applications were made for the aerodynamic shape optimization of Caradonna-Tung rotor blades and UH60 rotor blades in hover. The results showed that the present method is an effective tool to determine optimum aerodynamic shapes of rotor blades requiring less torque while maintaining the desired thrust level.

  • We developed a 'multi-point vibration acceleration method' for accurately predicting the cavitation intensity in pumps. Pressure wave generated by cavitation bubble collapse propagates and causes pump vibration. We measured vibration accelerations at several points on a casing, suction and discharge pipes of centrifugal and mixed-flow pumps. The measured vibration accelerations scattered because the pressure wave damped differently between the bubble collapse location and each sensor. In a conventional method, experimental constants are proposed without evaluating pressure propagation paths, then, the scattered vibration accelerations cause the inaccurate cavitation intensity. In our method, we formulated damping rate, transmittance of the pressure wave, and energy conversion from the pressure wave to the vibration along assumed pressure propagation paths. In the formulation, we theoretically defined a 'pressure propagation coefficient,' which is a correlation coefficient between the vibration acceleration and the bubble collapse pressure. With the pressure propagation coefficient, we can predict the cavitation intensity without experimental constants as proposed in a conventional method. The prediction accuracy of cavitation intensity is improved based on a statistical analysis of the multi-point vibration accelerations. The predicted cavitation intensity was verified with the plastic deformation rate of an aluminum sheet in the cavitation erosion area of the impeller blade. The cavitation intensities were proportional to the measured plastic deformation rates for three kinds of pumps. This suggests that our method is effective for estimating the cavitation intensity in pumps. We can make a cavitation intensity map by conducting this method and varying the flow rate and the net positive suction head (NPSH). The map is useful for avoiding the operating conditions having high risk of cavitation erosion.

  • A new propeller series is developed using the newly developed blade section(KH18 section) which behaves better cavitation characteristics and higher lift-drag ratio at wide range of angle-of-attack. The pitch and camber distributions are disigned in order to have the same radial and chordwise loading distribution with the selected circumferentially averaged wake input. Since the geometries of the series propeller, such as chord length, thickness, skew and rate distribations, are selected by regression of the recent full scale propeller geometric data, the performance prediction of a propeller at preliminary design stage can be mure realistic. Number of blades of the series propellers is 4 and the expanded blade area ratios are 0.3, 0.45, 0.6 and 0.75. Mean pitch ratios are selected as 0.5, 0.65, 0.8, 0.75 and 1.1 for each expanded area ratio. The new propeller series is composed of 20 propellers and is named as KD(KRISO-DAEWOO) propeller series. Propeller open water tests are performed at the experimental towing tank, and the cavitation observation tests and fluctuating pressure measurements are carried out at the cavitation tunnel of KRISO. $B_{P}-\delta$ curves, which can be used to select the optimum propeller diameter at the preliminary design stage, are derived from a regression analysis of the propeller often water test results. The KD-cavitation chart is derived from the cavitation observation test results by choosing the local maximum lift coefficient and the local cavitation number as parameters. The caviy extent of a propeller can be predicted more accurately by using the KD-cavitation chart at a preliminary design stage, since it is derived from the results of the cavitation observation tests in the selected ship's wake, whereas the existing cavitation charts, such as the Burrill's cavitation chart, are derived from the test results in uniform flow.

  • The autorotative flight of maple seeds(Acer palmatum) is numerically simulated based on the 3D geometry and the motion parameters of real seeds. The nominal values of the motion parameters are 1.26 m/s for descent velocity, 133.6 rad/s (1,276 rpm) for spinning rate, $19.4^{\circ}$ for coning angle, and $-1.5^{\circ}$ for pitch angle. A compact leading-edge vortex (LEV) positioned at the inner span of the seed blade causes a large suction pressure on its leeward surface. The suction pressure peaks occur near the leading region of inner span sections. The flow pattern characterized by the prominent LEV and the values of aerodynamic force coefficients obtained in the present study are in good agreement with experimental data measured for a dynamically-scaled robot maple seeds. A spiraling vortex developed in the leeward region advances toward the seed tip and merges with the tip-passing flow, which is considered to be a mechanism of maintaining stable and attached LEV for the autorotating maple seeds.

  • This paper presents the influence of Reynolds number on propeller open-water performance at the towing tank and the cavitation tunnel for series propellers(No. of blade=4, $0.3{\leq}A_E/A_O{\leq}0.75,\;0.5{\leq}P/D{\leq}1.1$). It is shown that the Reynolds number recommanded by 15th and 17th ITTC is not large enough to obtain reliable P.O.W. test results and then the suitable test conditions for the both facilities is suggested. The correlation of the propeller open-water characteristics at the cavitation tunnel and the towing tank is described and a correlation factor $\kappa$ is deduced from those test results. The viscous effect of the flow around the propeller shaft on the propeller characteristics is investigated from the velocity measurement by Laser Doppler Velocitimetry(L.D.V.). The measured velocity distribution shows that viscous flow effect is not negligible.

  • The present study analyzed the effect of film hole position of 45 degree ribbed cooling channel on film cooling performance of gas turbine blades. We also investigated the influence of the ribs under the fixed blowing ratio. Three-dimensional numerical model was constructed and extensive simulation was conducted using the commercial code (Fluent ver. 17.0) under steady-state condition. Base on the simulation results, We investigated the cooling effectiveness, flow velocity, streamline, and pressure coefficient. Moreover, We analyzed the effect of cooling hole position on ejection of the secondary flow caused by the rib structure. From the results, It was found that internal flow of the cooling channel forms a vortex pair in the counterclockwise from the top side, and clockwise from the bottom side. For the channels with ribs, the vortex flow generated by the ribs caused a higher pressure difference near the hole outlet, resulting in at least 12% higher cooling effectiveness than the channel without ribs. Additionally, when the hole is located on the left side of the ribbed channel (Rib-Left), it can be found that the secondary flow generated by the ribs hits against wall surface near the hole to form a flow in the direction of the hole inclination angle. Therefore, It is considered that the region where the cooling gas discharged to the blade surface stays in the main flow boundary layer is wider than the other cases. In this case, The largest pressure coefficient difference was observed near the outlet of the hole, and as a result, the discharge of the cooling gas was accelerated and the cooling efficiency was slightly increased.

  • Experimental investigation was performed to analyze the flow field characteristics and power generation performance for a shroud tidal power generation system. Electrical power output was compared with the rotational speed of the turbine blade and electric load connected to the generator for various flow velocity. As the electrical load decreased, the speed of the turbine increased rapidly and reached by about 2 times. The power output also increased remarkably with the decrease of load, and then decreased after maximum power point. In addition, the maximum power point appeared at high electrical loads as the experimental flow velocity increased. These results of the flow field characteristics and power generation performance analysis of the shroud tidal power generation system variation with the flow velocity conditions and electrical load are expected to be the basic data necessary for the development of efficient shroud tidal power generation system.

  • It was found that mixing patterns suddenly changed at an impeller rotation speed in a dished bottom vessel with dual Rushton turbines. Two isolated mixing regions like doughnuts rings generated at a low rotational speed and three isolated mixing regions generated at a higher speed. This phenomenon was observed at the mixing condition in transition area, where the power number with baffle was the same as that without baffle. We found a phenomenon in which the flow state in a dish-bottom agitation tank equipped with a two-stage Rushton turbine blade changes at a certain rotational speed. In the laminar flow region, the isolated stable donut rings were formed even when the rotational speed was changed, and no specific variation in the mixing pattern was observed. In the transition region, the two isolated thick unmixed donut rings do not change even if the rotation speed is changed in the flat bottom vessel, whereas in the dished bottom vessel, when the rotation speed is 450 rpm, the two isolated thick unmixed donut rings are changed to three isolated thin donut rings and then improved mixing. In the dished bottom vessel, in the range of Re=138~178, the isolated ring-shaped unmixed region appeared in three places and the size was also large. But in the flat bottom vessel, the isolated thick ring-shaped unmixed region appeared in two places in Re=116~176 and the size was also small. It appeared in two places, and the size was also small. The condition in which this phenomenon is observed is a transition region, and it was found that when the baffle plate is attached, the power number starts to increase compared to when the baffle plate is not present. In addition, when the mixing Reynolds number exceeded 300 and a slight turbulence was mixed in the flow state, the disconnection of these flow pattern was resolved and the mixture was completely mixed.
