  • In July 2022 and 2023, black mold symptoms were observed sporadically on fruits of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants grown in a greenhouse located in Suwon, Korea. The incidence of black mold on the fruits was 5-24% (average 14.8%) in variety SP-504 (yellow and elongate type) and 1-8% (average 5%) in variety SP-505 (red and round type) investigated. Four single-conidium isolates of Alternaria sp. obtained from the diseased fruits were identified as Alternaria alternata based on the morphological characteristics and molecular phyogenetic analyses. The isolates were tested for pathogenicity to sweet pepper fruits of varieties SP-504 and SP-505 through artificial inoculation. The isolates mostly induced large lesions on fruits of the two varieties in the wound inoculation, but only two isolates small lesions on fruits of the variety SP-504 in the non-wound inoculation. No lesions formed on fruits of the variety SP-505 in the non-wound inoculation. The pathogenicity tests revealed that susceptibility of sweet pepper fruits to the disease differs between the varieties. The symptoms induced by pathogenicity tests with the isolates were similar to those observed on fruits from the greenhouse investigated. This is the first report of A. alternata causing black mold on sweet pepper fruits in Korea.

  • A die casting mold releasing agent was prepared from aqueous mixture of powdery carbon black and water soluble natural polymeric materials such as xanthan gum(X-gum) and carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC), which were used as thickening agent as well as curing agent with aldehydes. The suitable concentration of natural polymers for stable dispersion of carbon black in water was 0.25 wt% of X-gum or 1.0 wt% of CMC. When CMC was used less than 1 wt%, the final carbon black disperion showed a rapid phase separation. The adhesion of carbon black releasing agent on glass plate was improved with the amount of crosslinking agent, glutaraldehyde and chain extender, oligosaccharide. However, the affinity of carbon black releasing agent prepared with X-gum was stronger than that with CMC on glass plate. The final carbon black mold releasing agents prepared under our mixing conditions can be applied to the production of castings of high quality with good workability and without worthening evironmental situations.

  • Black mold was frequently observed on tomatoes grown in a greenhouse in Suwon, Korea in July 2018. The incidence of the disease was 5.0-25.0% (average 12.3%) and 2.0-7.0% (average 3.7%) in the context of tomato and cherry tomato fruits, respectively. Sixteen single-spore isolates of Alternaria sp. were obtained from the diseased fruits and investigated for their morphological characteristics. Among the isolates, eight were used for sequencing analysis. All of the isolates were identified as Alternaria alternata based on their morphological and molecular characteristics. The pathogenicity of four isolates of A. alternata was investigated using three varieties each of tomato and cherry tomato via artificial inoculation. All of the isolates induced black mold symptoms on the inoculated tomato fruits. Notably, the symptoms were similar to those observed in the greenhouse. However, the pathogenicity tests revealed that different tomato varieties presented distinct patterns of susceptibility to the isolates. This is the first report of A. alternata causing black mold on tomato fruits in Korea.

  • The objective of this work was to optimize processing parameters of hybrid thermoplastic composites in compression molding. The mechanical properties of the composites manufactured with various forming conditions were measured to characterize processing parameters. Polypropylene(PP) composites containing randomly oriented long carbon fiber and carbon black were used in this work. The composite materials contained 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% carbon fiber and 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% carbon black by weight. Compression molding was conducted at various mold temperatures. The temperature of the material in the mid-plain was monitored during the forming. Crystallinity was also measured by using XRD. The tensile modulus of the composites increase, with increasing the mold temperature. However, the impact strength of the composites decreases as mold temperature increases.

  • In September 2011, black leaf mold caused by Pseudocercospora fuligena occurred on tomato plants growing in protected cultivation conditions in Boryong and Buyeo, Chungnam Province, Korea. Symptoms of the disease initially appeared as foliar chlorotic spots on upper leaf surfaces, turned light brown and then black on lower leaf surfaces as the fungus sporulates profusely. The causal fungus was isolated from the diseased plants and identified as P. fuligena based on morphological characteristics. Pathogenicity of the fungus was proved by artificial inoculation in the green house. This is the first report of the occurrence of black leaf mold of tomato caused by P. fuligena in Korea.

  • This Paper proposes the tire mold number identification method which reads the letters on a tire surface with 3D. It is very difficult to separate the letters from the background of an image since the letters on a tire surface is an embossed data. There was many studies to read the letters on a tire surface for the factory automation, however, it was very difficult to separate the letters from the background of an image since the letters on a tire surface is embossed black characters on the black ground. In this study, we first developed the method to find the location of tire mold number, which is used to classify the tire size, from the embossed letters on a tire surface using 3-dimensional laser profile camera which is not affected by the lighting condition, then developed the method to separate the mold number from that location. As a result, we were able to contribute to automate the tire size classification which has been manually performed by operators previously.

  • Hybrid composites usually are defined as composites having different types of reinforcements such as fibers and particles. The major advantage of hybrid composites is able to control the material properties such as optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. For this reason, hybrid composites are widely used in automotive, marine, household, and electrical industries. The objective of this work was to investigate processing characteristics in the compression molding of hybrid thermoplastic composites. The mechanical properties of composites manufactured in various forming conditions were monitored. The composites contained randomly oriented long carbon fiber and carbon black in polypropylene(PP) matrix were used. The carbon fiber contents of composites were 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, and carbon black contents were 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by weight. Compression molding was conducted at various mold temperatures. Crstallinity was also measured by using X-RD. The tensile modulus of the composites increased with increasing the mold temperature. However, the impact strength of the composites decreased as the mold temperature increased.

  • During crop disease surveys in 2019 and 2021, we observed gray mold symptoms on the leaves of wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) plants grown in vinyl greenhouses in Taebaek and Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, Korea. The symptoms appeared at the edges of the leaves, where the infected areas turned black and rotted, and many gray molds formed on the lesions. The incidence of gray mold on the leaves in the vinyl greenhouses at the two locations ranged from 1 to 30%. Four fungal isolates were obtained from leaf lesions and identified as Botrytis cinerea based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. Two isolates of B. cinerea were used for pathogenicity tests on the leaves of wasabi plants by artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed in leaves. The symptoms induced by the isolates were similar to those observed in wasabi leaves in the vinyl greenhouses investigated. This is the first report of B. cinerea causing gray mold in wasabi in Korea.

  • Tomato black leaf molds were collected from the six metropolitan cities, which were occurred mainly from the end of August until November. There was no significant difference on the fungal growth between potato dextrose agar and tomato-oatmeal agar media. The mycelial growth of the fungus was robust at a relatively high temperature, from 28 to $30^{\circ}C$. The suppression rates of hyphal growth ranged from 17-98% on the media supplemented with four different chemicals such as difenoconazole, fluquinconazole and prochloraz manganese complex, metconazole, and flutianil and there is no different suppression rates of the fungicides on the tested Pseudocercospora fuligena isolates.

  • In order to isolate microorganisms which produce antibiotics aganist wheat black rust, some bacteria, molds, and actinomycetes were isolated from soils and screened for the production of antibiptics against wheat black rust. Beacuse wheat black rust-puccinia graminis--is a complete parsitic mold which can't grow in artifical medium, new method for the screening of antibiotic producing microorgsnisms against wheat black rust developed by using live leaves of wheat. With new method, a strain No. $480HS_{20}$ which produces a substnace having strong and Puccinia graminis activity and very narrow antimicrobial spectrum was isolated. the substance produced by the strain No.$480HS_{20}$ had better anti Puccinia graminis activity than any other known antifungal antibotics such as kasurgamycin, balasticidins, actidione, antimycin, ologomycin. And the substance was observed to be very stable at heat and ultraviolet light. The strain was indentified as Bacillus subtilis.
