  • Single carrier block transmission with frequency domain equalization(SC-FDE) has been shown to be a promising candidate in ultra-wideband(UWB) communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of SC-FDE over UWB communications with channel estimation error. The probability density functions of the frequency domain minimum mean-squared error(MMSE) equalizer taps are derived in closed form. The error probabilities of single carrier block transmission with frequency domain MMSE equalization under imperfect channel estimation are presented and evaluated numerically. Compared with the simulation results, our semi-analytical analysis yields fairly accurate bit error rate performance, thus validating the use of the Gaussian approximation method in the performance analysis of the SC-FDE system with channel estimation error.

  • I/Q phase unbalance caused by non-ideal circuit components is inevitable physical phenomenons and leads to performance degradation when we implement a practical coherent M-ary phase shift keying(M-PSK) demodulator. In this paper, we present an exact and general expression involving two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions for the bit error rate(BER) of uniform M-PSK with I/Q phase unbalance over an additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel. First we derive a BER expression for the k-th bit of 8, 16-PSK signal constellations when Gray code bit mapping is employed. Then, from the derived k-th bit BER expression, we present the exact and general average BER expression for M-PSK with I/Q phase unbalance. This result can readily be applied to numerical evaluation for various cases of practical interest in an I/Q unbalanced M-PSK system, because the one- and two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions can be easily and directly computed using commonly available mathematical software tools.

  • Satellite optical communication has gained significant attention owing to its many quality features (e.g., a larger bandwidth, license free spectrum, higher data rate, and better security) compared to satellite microwave communication. Various experiments have been performed during many space missions to demonstrate and characterize inter-satellite links, downlinks, and uplinks. Korea has also planned to establish an experimental communication system using a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite and the Geochang station as an optical ground station for low Earth orbit (LEO)-to-ground optical relay links. In this study, the performance of inter-satellite communication links and downlinks was investigated for the new Korean experimental communication system in terms of link margin, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. In particular, the performance of the inter-satellite links was analyzed based on the receiving apertures and the transmitting power, while that of the downlink was analyzed in terms of atmospheric turbulence conditions and transmitting power. Finally, we discussed two system parameters of receiving aperture and transmitting power to meet the three criteria of link margin, BER, and channel capacity.

  • In this paper we analyze the bit error rate of an in-band DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) system which is based upon orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) and uses M-PSK and M-QAM modulation schemes in the interference environment of an analog FM signal. Results are derived which take into account the influence of the frequency non- selective Rician fading channel, but they are valid for Rayleigh fading channel and AWGN channel as well. Theoretical bit error rates and simulation results are given for system parameters for DAB proposed by ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute).

  • In this paper, 60 GHz indoor broadband wireless channels are measured with various configurations in a typical coffice environment. Mesurements are taken at nine positions of the room and the base-station antenna is placed either at the center or at an edge of the measurement room, and the remote-station antenna is either sharp beam or broad beam type. The rms delay spread(RDS) and normalized received power (NRP) are estimated from the measurements. Bit error rate simulations are performed using impulse responses for two measurement positions with QPSK/DQPSK OFDM modulation. Using sharp beam antenna results in superior performances than using broad beam antenna in terms of both bit error rates (BER) and NRP penalty. Also, placing the bese-station antenna at the center is superior to placing it at an edge in terms of BER and NRP.

  • As wireless mobile networks have been widely adopted due to their convenience for deployment, the research for improving their performance has been actively conducted. Since their throughput is restrained by the packet corruption rate not by congestion as in wired networks, however, network simulations for performance evaluation need to select the appropriate wireless channel model representing the behavior of propagation errors for the evaluated channel. The selection of the right model should depend on various factors such as the adopted frequency band, the level of signal power, the existence of obstacles against signal propagation, the sensitivity of protocols to bit errors, and etc. This paper analyzes 10-day bit traces collected from real sensor channels exhibiting the high bit error rate to determine a suitable sensor channel model. For selection, it also evaluates the performance of two error recovery algorithms such as a link layer FEC algorithm and three TCPs (Tahoe, Reno, and Vegas) over several channel models. The comparison analysis shows that CM(Chaotic Map) model predicts 3-time less BER variance and 10-time larger PER(Packet Error Rate) than traces while these differences between the other models and traces are larger than 10-time. The simulation experiments, furthermore, prove that CM model evaluates the performance of these algorithms over sensor channels with the precision at least 10-time more accurate than any other models.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the performance of FH/CPFSK system with differential detection in thermal noise, partial-band jamming noise and adjacent interference of all eight bit pattern. The parameters to analize performances of FH/CPFSK system have been used the bit rate, modulation index and performances of FH/CPFSK system with the differential detector have been presented with the optimum correlation function. And, we were compared with performance of FH/CPFSK and FH/BFSK system. In result, we could know that bit error probability of the approximation equation and exact equation nearly accorded in the high signal-to-noise ratio. And, we have been proved that FH/CPFSK system with differential detection according to jamming fraction ${\gamma}$ was worst to 3dB than FH/CPFSK system with limiter-discriminator. but was superior to 2dB than FH/BFSK.

본 논문에서는 IEEE P802.15.4a 표준에 명시되어 있는 FEC를 구현하여 AWG(adaptive white gaussian noise) 채널에서의 SNR(signal to noise ratio)에 따른 BER(bit error rate)을 구함으로써 성능을 분석하였다. 실험에서의 정확한 결과를 얻기 위해 15.4a의 UWB에서의 변조 방식에 따라 신호를 변조한 후 잡음을 삽입하여 결과를 도출하였다.

  • Theoretical Bit Error Rate (BER) and channel capacity analysis are always of great interest to the designers of wireless communication systems. At the center of such analyses people are often encountered with a high-dimensional multiple integrals with quite complex integrands. Conventional Gaussian quadrature is inefficient in handling problems like this, as it tends to entail tremendous computational overhead, and the principal order of its error term increase rapidly with the dimension of the integral. In this paper, we propose a new approach to calculate complex multi-fold integrals based on the number theory. In contrast to Gaussian quadrature, the proposed approach requires less computational effort, and the principal order of its error term is independent of the dimension. The effectiveness of the number theory based approach is examined in BER and capacity analyses for practical systems. In particular, the results generated by numerical computation turn out in good match with that of Monte-Carlo simulations.

  • This paper analyses BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of 2-hop wireless communications networks with hybrid decode-and-forward (HDF) relays. The conventional HDF method is usually based on the receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the relay to decide whether to forward the decoded data in order to obviate the erroneous detection at the relay. In contrast, we propose a new solution of using log-likelihood ratio (LLR) as an efficient alternative to SNR. The approximate BER expressions of different HDF schemes are also derived and verified by Monte-Carlo simulations. In addition, we compute the optimum thresholds for HDF schemes. A variety of numerical results demonstrate that the new LLR-based HDF significantly outperforms the SNR-based HDF for any threshold level and relay location under flat Rayleigh fading channel plus AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise).
