  • Birdsfoot trefoil grows wild in some parts of Korea, but specific information is lacking as to its growth characteristics, nutritive value and dry matter production potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of wild birdsfoot trefoil(Lotus cornicubus L.) as a forage. Wild birdsfoot trefoil and Au Dewey were field sown at Keongsan, Keongbuk in the spring of 19%. Emergence for Au Dewey was better than for wild birdsfoot trefoil. It was observed that the flowering date of the wild birdsfoot trefoil was similar to Au Dewey. Regrowth of Au Dewey was better than that of the wild birdsfoot trefoil at each harvesting. AAer the last harvesting date, October 1, there was no regrowth of the wild birdsfoot trefoil, but regrowth of Au Dewey measured IOcm. Weed infestation in the wild birdsfoot trefoil plots was higher than in the Au Dewey plots. The dry matter yields were significantly(P< 0.05) higher for Au Dewey than for the wild birdsfoot trefoil.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the transformed birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) plants with BcHSP17.6 gene using Agrobacterium turnefaciens LBA4404 and we confirmed transformed gene from the regenerated birdsfoot trefoil plants. The expression vector, pBKH4 vector, harboring BcHSP17.6 gene was used for production of transgenic birdsfoot trefoil plants. The callus of birdsfoot trefoil was cocultivated with Agrobacteriurn turnefaciens and transformed calli were selected on kanamycin-containing SH-kc medium to regenerate into plants. The transformed birdsfoot trefoil plants were produced 4 momths after cultivation on BOi2Y medium. The transgenic birdsfoot trefoil plants were analyzed by isolation of genomic DNA and genomic Southern hybridization using a -32P labelled BcHSPl7.6 fragments. • In an effort to investigate the germination and growth characteristics of tannin containing forage crops (such as chicory, birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus pedunculatus, sulla, lespedeza, crownvetch, sainfoin), germinativity, seedling vigor, and productivity were studied. Although the cumulative germination percentage (CGP) of chicory and birdsfoot trefoil was low, the germination rate(GR) and days to reach 50% of final germination(Gt50) were excellent. Crownvetch, lespedeza and sainfoin showed poor germination. Chicory seeds were light but the rate of emergence and establishment were high. Seeds of Lotus pedunculatus and birdsfoot trefoil were also small, but their rates of emergence and establishment were quite good. On the other hand, seeds of sainfoin and crownvetch were heavy but their emergence and establishment rate were very low. Lespedeza was the best in getting over the hot summer, and crownvetch also survived well during summer. Chicory was good in productivity and early growing but its persistence was not good. In case of birdsfoot trefoil and Lotus pedunculatus their early growing were slow but their productivity and persistence were fairly well. Lespedeza, crownvetch, and sainfoin showed poor growth in Korea. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that chicory would be better to use as short term high productive forage crop, and Lotus pedunculatus and birdsfoot trefoil could be used as continuous functional forage crops in Korea. • Effects of nitrogen incorporated with 15N-nitrogen, which was applied to grown alone and in mixture with grass and legumes of forage crops, on the yield of dry matter, total nitrogen content, percentage of nitrogen derived from fertilizer (P.N.D.F.), A-value were studied, and the results obtained are as follows: 1. With nitrogen for the yield of dry matter was highly effective only to orchardgrass and were also effect to the early stages of alfalfa and birdsfoot trefoil in case of a mixed sowing. 2. Alone and mixed sowings showed the yield of dry matter in decreasing order of alfalfa<red clover>orchardgrass>birdsfoot trefoil, and orchardgrass + alfalfa>orchardgrass + red clover>orchardgrass + birdsfoot trefoil, respectively. 3. In case of grown alone, orchardgrass gave higher percentage of nitrogen derived from fertilizer (P.N.D.F.) than legume, whereas in case of grown in mixture it was in reverse order throughout the plots. It appears likely that orchardgrass was rather supplied soil nitrogen by legume then by nitrogen application. And P.N.D.F. was getting smaller in the latter stage of all forage crops in case of grown alone. In case of grown in mixture, however, and inconsistent P.N.D.F. was obtained from orchardgrass. 4. The A-value in case of grown alone was decreased in order of alfalfa>red clover>orchardgrass>birdsfoot trefoil. In contrast, however, the A-value in case of grown in mixture wes decreased in order of orchardgasss+alfalfa (3:7)>orchardgrass+red clover (3:7)>orchardgrass+red clover (3:7)>orchardgrass+alfalfa(5:5)>orchardgrass+birdsfoot trefoil (5:5)>orchardgrass+red clover (5:5)>orchardgrass+birdsfoot trefoil (3:7).

  • To develop transgenic birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) plants tolerant to environmental stress, Arabidopsis NDPK gene (AtNDPK) was introduced into birdsfoot trefoil plants using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and expressed powerfully under the control of the E35S promoter. The expression vector, pEN-K was used for introduction of AtNDPK gene into birdsfoot trefoil plaits. The transformed calli were selected on kanamycin containing medium and then regenerated. The transformed birdsfoot trefoil plants were cultivated for 4 months on BOi2Y medium. Genomic DNA PCR and Southern blot analysis confirmed the incorporation of AtNDPK into the birdsfoot trefoil genome.

  • Effects of nitrogen applied to grown alone and in mixture with grass and legumes of forage crops on the yield of dry matter, absorptivity, and the amount of nitrogen fixation were studied using $^{15}N$ ammonium sulfate. 1. The amount of nitrogen fixation in legume was decreased in order of alfalfa > red clover > birdsfoot trefoil, and red clover gave highest soil-nitrogen dependency. 2. Fertilizer nitrogen for the yield of dry matter was highly effective only in orchardgrass, and effective at the early stages of alfalfa and birdsfoot trefoil in case of a mixed sowing. 3. Alone and mixed sewings showed the yield of dry matter in decreasing order of alfalfa > red clover > orchardgrass > birdsfoot trefoil and orchardgrass + alfalfa > orchardgrass + red clover > orchardgrass + birdsfoot trefoil, respectively. 4. The plot of with nitrogen showed greater nitrogen uptake than the plot of without-nitrogen throughout the plots. In case of grown alone, however, difference in the absorptivity of various forage crops was decreased in order of alfalfa > red clover > orchardgrass > birdsfoot trefoil. 5. Regardless of nitrogen application, nitrogen uptake amount of orchardgrass was higher in the plot of mixture then in the plot grown alone, except the with nitrogen plot of red clover grown in mixture at the ratio of 3 : 7.

  • Seedling vigor of introgressive hybrids between birdsfoot refoil 'MO-20"(Lotus corniculatus) used as the maternal parent and tetraploid(2n=4x=24)accession PI302921 narrowleaf trefoil(Lotus corniculatus L.), and parents were compared in terms of dry matter accumulation , net photosynthetic rate, dark respiration rate, and growth analysis. The hybrids showed better seedling vigor than PI302921 as they had lower dark respiration rate and higher relative growth rate (RGR) than PI302921. Hybrids grew faster than MO-20, but there was not significant difference between them. Net photosynthesis per unit area increased during three weeks after emergence without difference among the entries, then decreased sharply with leaf age and shading marking much differences among entries Dark respiration rate was very high just after emergence, after which it decreased rapidly until it reached a stable level at 1 week through 3 weeks of age, and then dropped again. In general, dark respiration, photosynthesis, and seedling growth of the hybrid was similar to those if MO-20. Although there are some reports about interspecific hybrids of Lotus species, it still remains as a new area for genetic improvement of seedling vigor of L. corniculatus.atus.
