  • It is desirable to monitor the vital signals, such as ECG, of a emergency patient during transfer in the hospital as well as in the ambulance. The purpose of this study is to develop a system which provides a real-time and wireless ECG to the medical staff nearby patient during transfer in hospital. In this context, we developed a low-power, low-cost and portable ECG system consisting of 1) ECG measurement and RF transmission module and 2) RF receiving and LCD display module. The developed system is expected to be useful in monitoring ECG of a patient during transfer in the hospital.

  • Cellular protection against carcinogens could be achieved by the induction of phase 2 detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione S-transferase (GST), NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO1). Nuclear transcription factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) binds to antioxidant response element (ARE) in the promoter region of these genes and the resulting transactivation occurs. In the present study the effect of gujeolcho (Chrysanthemum zawadskii) roots on the Nrf2-ARE pathway were investigated. C. zawadskii root extract was fractionated with a series of organic solvents and their ability to induce Nrf2-ARE pathway was examined. We separated the most potent dichloromethane (DCM) fraction into 12 sub-fractions and found several sub-fractions with strong effects on the Nrf2-ARE pathway. Fraction 4 strongly induced the ARE-reporter gene activity as well as Nrf2 expression. Sitosterol was isolated as a major compound in fraction 4 although its activity was not as potent as its mother fraction. These results indicate that C. zawadskii roots might be used as a potential natural chemopreventive source.

  • The removal of impulsive noise terms which occur in interventricular pressure (IVP) signals of a Korean-type total artificial heart is essential for estimation of atrial pressure change. We compared various order statistic filters and conclude that median filter with sidelength L = 1 is the most appropriate filter for IVP signals in the perspectives of operation cost, detail preserving (peak value), and waveform.

  • Researches for stem cells have been focused on scientists in biomedical sciences as well as clinical application for its great therapeutic potentials. Stem cells have two distinct characteristics: self-renewal and differentiation. In this short review, the links between stem cell research and biomedical engineering is discussed based on the basic characteristics of stem cells. This concept can be extended to the fundamental questions of biological sciences for cells such as proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and migration. For understanding proliferation and apoptosis of stem cells, techniques from biomedical engineering such as surface patterning, MEMS, nanotechnologies have been used. The advanced technologies such as microfluidic technologies, three dimensional scaffold fabrication, and mechanical/electrical stimulation have also been used in cell differentiation and migration. Basic and unsolved questions in the stem cell research field have limitations by studying conventional technologies. Therefore, the strategic fusion between stem cell biology and novel biomedical engineering field will break the barriers for understanding fundamental questions of stem cells, which can open the window for the clinical applications of stem cell based therapeutics as well as regeneration of damaged tissues.

  • The development of digital x-ray detector has been extensively progressed for the application of various medical modalities. In this study, we introduce a new hybrid-type x-ray detector to improve problems of a conventional direct or indirect digital x-ray image technology, which composed of multi-layer structure using a CaWO$_4$ phosphor and amorphous selenium (a-Se) photoconductor. The leakage current of our detector was found to be ∼180 pA/cm$^2$ at 10 V/m, which was significantly reduced than that of a single a-Se detector. The x-ray sensitivity was measured as the value of 4230 pC/cm$^2$/mR at 10 V/m. We found that the parylene thin film between a CaWO$_4$ phosphor and an a-Se layer acts as an insulator to prevent charge injection from indium thin oxide (ITO) electrode into an a-Se layer under applied bias.

  • In this paper we reviewed and stated the present state of our team's research of the moving-actuator type total artificial heart (MA-TAH). Especially, this paper showed new direction of researches. The integrated research of battery, telemetry, TET is required. And the real-time supervisory of the state of hemodynamic variables and MA-TAH is also needed. These requirement made us to think the supervisory control system (SCS). As functional abilities of the SCS require very high computational cost, the digital signal processor is an appropriate choice for our need.
