  • The Fenton reaction, which refers to the reaction between ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide to produce the OH radical, has not been widely applied to the disinfection of microorganisms despite being economic and environmentally friendly. Cho et al. have previously proposed the neutral photo ferrioxalate system as a solution to the problems posed by the Fenton reaction in acidic conditions, but this system still requires an external hydrogen peroxide supply. In the present study, we developed a simple disinfection technology using the photo or solar ferrioxalate reaction without the need for an external hydrogen peroxide supply. E. coli was employed as the indicating microorganism. The study results demonstrated the effectiveness of the photo ferrioxalate system in inactivating E. coli without any external hydrogen peroxide supply, as long as dissolved oxygen is supplied. Furthermore, the solar ferrioxalate system achieved faster inactivation of E. coli than an artificial light source at similar irradiance.

  • Three macrophytes species, that are, Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia were grown in mono culture in order to compare growth (relative biomass increase rate), variation of photosynthetic pigment (total chlorophyll, Chl a, Chl b and Chl a/Chl b) and effectiveness of nutriment removal in 15%o NaCl-salt solution or processed-leachate (salinity 19.6%o) from sanitary landfill sites. The relative biomass increase rate of p. australis was significantly higher than Z. latifolia and T. angustifolia. In the case of processed-leachate treatment, the relative biomass increase rates of above-part, rhizome and root of P. australiswere 178 %, 148 % and 157 %, respectively. Also, in 15%o NaCl-salt solution treatment, the relative biomass increase rates of P. australis increased as follows; 161 % (above-part), 183 % (rhizome) and 112 % (root). Total chlorophyll contents increased significantly in the leaves of P. australis and Z. latifolia grown in 15%o NaCl-salt solution and processed-leachate. Among three macrophytes, P. australis was evaluated as most effective macrophyte for the biological retreatment of processed-leachate from sanitary landfill sites.

  • If a nation or a terrorist organization produced biological agents, they are likely stored in a form of liquid concentrate. In the present study, four chemical reagents, hydrogen peroxide, sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC), Perasafe, and DF200, were investigated on their potentials as safe, efficient and eco-friendly decontaminants for biological agents. Escherichia coli, α-amylase, and bacteriophage T4 were used as surrogate strains for biological agents. Hydrogen peroxide and DF200 showed drawbacks of a rapid heat evolution upon neutralization and thick foam building up, respectively. Perasafe was effective against E. coli and T4, but it did not inactivate α-amylase while the others were able to inactivate all three types of the surrogates. NaDCC was the most suitable decontaminant for its effectiveness against all three types of surrogates at low concentrations and being able to be neutralized without aforementioned problems.

  • Survivability in a battle field is the most important aspect to the warriors. To analyze the survival effectiveness of warrior platform, the simulation via war-game model is an essential step in advance to the development of platform. In this study, Army Weapon effectiveness Analysis Model(AWAM) was utilized for analysis. Several weapon parameters were adjusted to apply the characteristics of warrior platform in some cases of the defense and survival system. Especially, adjusted triage possibility, probability of kill, fatality and accuracy were employed as parameters in the simulation program to evaluate the survival effectiveness of intelligent system based on the previous researches. In the future battle field or virtual space in the AWAM, the warrior platform intelligent system could react emergency treatment on time by expoiting the bio-information of man at arms. Considering the order of supply priority, special force was selected as operating troops and battle scenario without engagement was selected to measure accurate survival effectiveness. In conclusion, the survivability of defence and survival system of the warrior platform was about 1.47 times higher than that of current system.

  • Purpose : This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of laser acupuncture for each condition using information from laser acupuncture trials registered on clinicaltrials.gov from January 2013 to June 2023. Methods : We quantitatively and qualitatively analysed the results of 16 clinical trials of laser acupuncture whose research results were confirmed. A risk of bias assessment was also carried out to assess the quality of each clinical trial. Results : A meta-analysis including three clinical trials was conducted to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of laser acupuncture and sham laser acupuncture in reducing pain and found that the laser acupuncture group had a statistically significant reduction in pain compared with the sham laser acupuncture group. In addition, 11 of the 13 trials not included in the meta-analysis showed a positive effect of laser acupuncture. Conclusion : Although laser acupuncture has a long history of clinical use and a lot of research, there is still some scepticism due to the lack of a clear mechanism of action and inconsistent reports of clinical effectiveness. In addition, there is a significant lack of systematic reviews of clinical evidence for major disease specific, and ongoing research is needed to establish an objective evidence base for the clinical effectiveness of laser acupuncture.

  • Stabilization of metals in contaminated soils using various waste materials has been reported. Alkaline materials (limes, shells, industrial byproducts, etc.), phosphorous (P) containing materials (animal bones, phosphate rock, etc.), organic materials (composts, manures, biochars, etc.) and others (zerovalent iron, zeolite, etc.) were widely evaluated to ensure its effectiveness/applicability of stabilization of metals in soils. Stabilization mechanisms of those materials above were partially revealed, but the related literatures are still lacked and not sufficient for approaching to long-term stability/applicability in the field. The aims of this review are to summarize current knowledge of metal stabilization in contaminated soils using various waste materials and to suggest a direction for future field research.

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the expectable current cure operation methods. Tumor tissue is treated by abundant oxygen in a body and generated singlet or free radical from exterior laser diode and photosensitizer. Current problem of PDT is the low penetration power of the light beam in a deep seated large tumor and solid tumor thus results in low treatment outcome. In the study, we tried to develop interstitial photodynamics therapy treatment to solve this problem. As the accurate determination of light dosimetry in biological tissue is one of the most important factors affecting the effectiveness of PDT, parameters used in this study are the optical property of biological tissue. Since biological tissues have large scattering coefficient to visible light the penetration depth of a biological tissue in visible light region is only $15\~20$ mm. We showed that it is possible to measure fluence rate and penetration depth within the biological tissues by Monte Carlo simulation very well. Based on the MC simulation study, the effectiveness of interstitial photodynamic therapy on tumor control in solid tumor was proved through in vivo animal experiment.

  • Considering the recent substantial increase in national research and development (R&D) budgets in the energy sector there has been increased Interest in the effectiveness of government R&D investments. We conducted a case study to calculate the allowable scale and effectiveness of R&D investment by calculating the direct performance improvement effect resulting from R&D investment as an economic value. Using conditions that existed prior to R&D investments as a reference, five cases in which performance improved due to R&D investments were compared and analyzed. The government's financial investment is increasing rapidly in line with the establishment of the national hydrogen roadmap. R&D is needed to enhance the current low technology readiness level of hydrogen fuel cells compared to solar and wind energy fields. Therefore, an R&D project to improve the performance of the fuel cell system was selected as this case study's subject. Using the results in this study, the allowable level of investment in the task unit of national R&D projects could be calculated. Moreover, it is advisable to provide a standard for rational decision making for new R&D investments since it is possible to determine investment priorities among a large number of candidates.
