  • In Korea, most hepatitis A virus is the IA genotype, but reports of other genotypes have increased recently. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to conduct a genotypic analysis of acute hepatitis A virus. From April 2010 to April 2011, clinical specimens from 20 patients hospitalized with acute hepatitis A and 36 sera positive for anti-HAV IgM were obtained, and the genotype of the VP1/P2A region was analyzed. RNA sequences of the VP1/P2A junction region were amplified using RT-PCR, and the sequences were compared. From 50 sequences amplified, 4 sequences (8%) belonged to genotype IA. The remaining 46 (92%) belonged to genotype IIIA. The results indicate that the genotype of the hepatitis A virus has changed from IA to IIIA in Korea.

  • Commercial powdered soups, such as potato soup(PS), corn soup(CS), and chicken-herb soup(CHS), were gamma-irradiated at 0, 1, 5 and 10 kGy and subjected to physicochemical evaluation and identification trials by analyzing photostimulated luminescence(PSL), electron spin resonance(ESR), and thermoluminescence(TL). The changes in moisture content and pH of soup samples were negligible upon irradiation. The Hunter's color determinations showed that lightness (L value) decreased and yellowness (b value) increased as the irradiation dose increased in PS sample. The viscosity of irradiated samples was reduced in the order of PS, CS and CHS. The analyses of PSL, ESR and TL were applicable to the identification of irradiated powdered-soups at more than 1 kGy by detecting PSL photon counts/60 sec(over 5000), radiation-induced multicomponents-ESR signal, and typical TL glow curve at $150-250^{\circ}C$.

  • Smilax sieboldii is one of the Smilax species. A number of Smilax plants have multiple physiologically-active components and anti-inflammatory/anti-oxidant effects. Antiobesity effects induced by Smilax sieboldii have not been reported. In this study, we investigated the effects and molecular mechanisms of anti-obesity activity of 70% ethanol Smilax sieboldii extract (SSE). The anti-obesity effect of SSE was determined using 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We confirmed that SSE was not cytotoxic to murine 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, we evaluated SSE dose-dependently decreased the accumulation of lipids via an Oil Red O assay and triglyceride assay. These anti-obesity activities of SSE were mediated by the inhibition of adipogenesis-related marker genes (peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ, CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein α, and SREBP1c) and lipogenesis-related marker genes (fatty acid synthase and aP2). These results suggest that SSE has the potential to exert anti-obesity and anti-hyperlipidemia effects by regulating adipogenic transcription factors and inhibiting the expression of adipogenic markers.

  • The government has introduced the Regional Innovation System (RIS) to establish regional innovation platforms, leading to the creation of the Bio-PRIDE shared university in the Chungbuk region, centered around the bio-health industry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the educational service quality of the Bio-PRIDE shared university through a qualitative approach. To achieve this, in-depth exploration of the experiences of students participating in the Bio-PRIDE shared university was conducted using Focus Group Interviews (FGI) and telephone interviews. The study identified three main findings: 1) Motivations for student participation included recommendations and support from professors, economic benefits and scholarships, the flexibility and convenience of remote learning, and the appeal of new learning experiences and challenges. 2) Experiences during participation revealed themes such as the effectiveness and challenges of remote classes, the value of providing up-to-date technology and content, student engagement and commitment, and communication and support from faculty. 3) The impact of participation after completing the program highlighted the importance of innovative learning experiences and expanded choices, the significance of information accessibility and learning support, the need for improved promotion and awareness of the shared university, and the necessity for administrative support and communication. In conclusion, the Bio-PRIDE shared university has successfully implemented educational innovation, offering students new learning experiences and contributing to the broadening of their academic perspectives. This study will serve as a foundational resource for improving the educational service quality and ensuring the successful operation of the Bio-PRIDE shared university in the future.

  • Recently, environmental pollution by livestock excretion is gathering strength as livestock industry is advanced on a large scale. Bio-gas is generated more than about 70 precent if remove impurities in the course of extracting bio-gas to use livestock excretion. In this paper, we developed a device that can use it in heating after extracting bio-gas from livestock excretion collected in livestock farmhouse and can supply electricity by using generator developed in itself. Also, because this system is epoch-making no discharge system to solve smear of existing method, it is expected that we have effects to prevent environmental pollution and get alternation energy and burden on the institution to treat livestock excretion of a pig breeder is solved, if use it.

  • In order to develop a pot lid that would not overflow, three parts were created, each different in size. One cover (A") had a small hole (dia. 10 cm) for the vapor to escape (dia. about 2.5 mm). Another, cover A' had a medium-sized hole (dia. about 5 cm) for the vapor to escape. Cover A (dia. 300 mm, $120\;mm^H$) had a large hole (dia. 100 mm) for the vapor to escape. Because the new cover was partially open while soy paste solution cooking, it showed that it could not only prevent overflow, but also extend the burning approaching and salinity increase time, reducing both cooking time and the amount of energy necessary to cook.

  • Korean building industry was developed by concrete and steel construction. However, concrete and steel have some problems which low carbon storage capability and difficulty of recycling. According to many studies, timber has high carbon storage capability, high recycling capability and sustainable supporting capability. Focus on this factors of timber, make new wall structure as Green Timber Wall panels and check the shear performance to use wall system in housing construction such as light-weight timber construction and nondearing wall on other construction. In the results, B-4-B and B-4-S show similar modulus of shear stiffness on the table. GH-4-GH has slip shape failure mode between Green Timber Wall boards. GH-4-GV has most stable characteristic curve than other specimens.

  • We tested the feasibility of measuring fat thickness using a miniaturized chip LED sensor module, testing 12 healthy female subjects. The module consisted of a single detector and four sources at four different source-detector distances (SD). A segmental curve-fitting procedure was applied, using an empirical algorithm obtained by Monte-Carlo simulation, and fat thicknesses were estimated. These thicknesses were compared to computed-tomography (CT) results; the correlation coefficient between CT and optical measurements was 0.932 for bicep sites. The mean percentage error between the two measurements was 13.12%. We conclude that fat thickness can be efficiently measured using the simple sensor module.

  • The purpose of the present investigation was to develop a novel method for cell immobilization. Aureobasidium pullulans cells were mixed with an alginate solution, and the mixture was extruded to form small gel beads as hydrated- immobilized cells. The beads were then placed at $-15^{\circ}C$ for 6-24 h to induce freeze-dehydration. The freeze-dehydration resulted in shrinkage of beads due to water removal reducing bead volume by 82% and bead weight by 85%. The dehydrated beads were successfully used for the production of fructo-oligosaccharides in a model reactor system. This study showed that bioreactor performance can be improved up to 2 times by the use of the dehydrated beads.
