Modelling protection behaviour towards micronutrient deficiencies: Case of iodine biofortified vegetable legumes as health intervention for school-going children

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite successes recorded in combating iodine deficiency, more than 2 billion people are still at risk of iodine deficiency disorders. Rural landlocked and mountainous areas of developing countries are the hardest hit, hence the need to explore and advance novel strategies such as biofortification. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We evaluated adoption, purchase, and consumption of iodine biofortified vegetable legumes (IBVL) using the theory of protection motivations (PMT) integrated with an economic valuation technique. A total of 1,200 participants from three land-locked locations in East Africa were recruited via multi-stage cluster sampling, and data were collected using two, slightly distinct, questionnaires incorporating PMT constructs. The survey also elicited preferences for iodine biofortified foods when offered at a premium or discount. Determinants of protection motivations and preferences for iodine biofortified foods were assessed using path analysis modelling and two-limit Tobit regression, respectively. RESULTS: Knowledge of iodine, iodine-health link, salt iodization, and biofortification was very low, albeit lower at the household level. Iodine and biofortification were not recognized as nutrient and novel approaches, respectively. On the other hand, severity, fear, occupation, knowledge, iodine status, household composition, and self-efficacy predicted the intention to consume biofortified foods at the household level; only vulnerability, self-efficacy, and location were the most crucial elements at the school level. In addition, results demonstrated a positive willingness-to-pay a premium or acceptance of a lesser discount for biofortification. Furthermore, preference towards iodine biofortified foods was a function of protection motivations, severity, vulnerability, fear, response efficacy, response cost, knowledge, iodine status, gender, age. and household head. CONCLUSIONS: Results lend support for prevention of iodine deficiency in unprotected populations through biofortification; however 'threat' appraisal and socio-economic predictors are decisive in designing nutrition interventions and stimulating uptake of biofortification. In principle, the contribution is threefold: 1) Successful application of the integrated model to guide policy formulation; 2) Offer guidance to stakeholders to identify and tap niche markets; 3) stimulation of rural economic growth around school feeding programmes.

통밀가루 첨가량에 따른 설기떡의 품질 특성 (Quality Characteristics of Sulgidduk with Whole Wheat Flour)

  • 식이섬유가 풍부한 WWF를 우리 전통 음식인 설기떡에 첨가하여 수분함량, 색, 기계적 조직감 특성, 노화도, 관능적 특성 등 품질 특성을 규명하였으며, 품질과 영양적 가치를 고려한 적절한 첨가 수준을 찾고자 하였다. 시료들 간 유의적인 수분 함량의 차이는 없었으며, 색도 중 L(명도)값은 WWF의 첨가량이 증가할수록 감소하는 값을 나타내었다. TPA 검사에서 hardness는 제조 직후 시료들 간 유의적인 차이가 없었으나, 저장 후에는 WWF의 함량이 많아질수록 그 값이 유의적으로 감소하여, WWF의 첨가가 설기떡의 노화 지연에 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 저장 기간 중 WWF 첨가량이 증가할수록 springiness와 chewiness가 대조군에 비해 낮은 값을 나타내었다. 그 밖의 조직감 특성은 시료 간 유의적인 차이를 보이지 않았다. Avrami 방정식의 시간상수(1/k)값은 WWF 함량이 증가할수록 증가하여 WWF의 노화지연 효과를 확인하였다. 관능적 품질특성은 맛과 향, 조직감에서 5% 대체군이 전반적으로 높게 평가되었으며 전반적인 기호도까지 고려하면 5% WWF 대체가 맛과 향 및 조직감에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Objectives : Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill contains many nutrients and exhibits high physiological functions. It has been shown that Schisandra seed and pamace contains more nutrients than fruits and thus have higher antioxidant efficacy. In this study, seed and pamace of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill (SPSC) were treated with hot-melt extrudate (HME) extrusion to produce water-soluble nanoparticles. Methods : SPSC was treated with HME to prepare nanoparticles. In this process, excipients (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, pullulan, 2-hydroxylpropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, lecithin) were added to prepare a hydrophilic polymer matrix. To compare and analyze the antioxidant effect and schizandrin content, total flavonoid content, total phenol content and ABTS assay were measured. To confirm the effect of increasing the water solubility of the particles, particle size and water solubility index measurements were performed. The molecular of the material was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Results : The particle size of HME extrudates decreased, while total phenols, flavonoids, schizandrin, antioxidant effect, and solubility increased. Through FT-IR, it was confirmed that the SPSC and the extrudate exhibit the same chemical properties. In addition, it was confirmed that when extracted with water, it exhibited a higher antioxidant effect than the ethanol extract. Conclusions : HME technology increased the solubility of SPSC, which are processing by-products, and improved their antioxidant effect to a higher degree. It was confirmed that SPSC could be used as an eco-friendly, high value-added material.

파우더와 오일의 배합 비율이 탈크 프리 프레스드 파우더 제형의 안정성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Influence of Blending Ratio of Powder and Oil on the Stability of Talc-Free Pressed Powder Formulation)

  • 프레스드 파우더의 주요 안정성 요인으로 경도와 낙하 안정도가 있다. 일반적으로 탈크가 포함된 프레스드 파우더의 경우 경도와 낙하 안정도를 고르게 충족시키며 사용감도 우수하지만 최근 탈크의 석면 이슈로 인해 대체를 원하는 고객들이 늘고 있다. 따라서 안정성을 유지하면서 사용감도 떨어지지 않는 탈크 프리 프레스드 파우더 제형의 개발이 시급하다. 본 연구에서는 탈크 프리 프레스드 파우더를 만들기 위한 최적의 원료 배합 비율을 찾기 위한 실험을 진행하였다. 파우더에 주로 사용되는 원료들의 특성을 확인하고 비율을 변화시켜 실험하여 명도와 경도를 측정하고 낙하 시험을 실시하였다. 천연 마이카 함량이 합성 마이카보다 많거나, 코팅된 실리카 대신 논 코팅 실리카를 사용할 경우 탈크가 포함된 내용물보다 경도와 낙하 안정도는 낮지만 명도는 유사하였다. 반대로 합성 마이카 함량이 천연 마이카 함량과 동일하거나 높을 경우, 코팅된 실리카 함량이 논코팅 실리카 함량과 동일하거나 높은 경우에 탈크가 포함된 내용물의 경도, 낙하 안정도와는 유사하였으나 명도는 낮게 측정되었다. 탈크가 포함된 내용물보다 경도는 높지만 낙하 안정성은 떨어지는 현상도 발견하여 경도와 낙하 안정성의 상관관계에 대해서는 추가적인 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

농촌공간계획 데이터 수급에 대한 이해당사자 인식조사 (Stakeholder Awareness of Rural Spatial Planning Data Utilization Based on Survey)

  • According to the 「Rural Spatial Reconstruction and Regeneration Support Act」, enacted on March 29, 2024, all local governments are required to establish a 'Rural Spatial Reconstruction and Regeneration Plan' (hereinafter referred to as the 'Rural Spatial Plan'). In order for the 'Rural Spatial Plan' to be appropriately established, this study analyzed the supply and demand of spatial data from the perspective of user stakeholders and derived implications for improving rural spatial planning data utilization. In conclusion, three key recommendations come from this result. Firstly, it is necessary to establish an integrated DB for rural spatial planning data. This can solve the problem of low awareness of scattered data-providing websites, reduce the processing time of non-GIS data, and reduce the time required to acquire data by securing the availability of data search and download. In particular, research should be conducted on the establishment of a spatial analysis simulation system to support stakeholders' decision-making, considering that many stakeholders have difficulty in spatial analysis because spatial analysis techniques were not actively used in rural projects before the implementation of the rural agreement system in 2020. Secondly, research on how to improve data acquisition should be conducted in each data sector. The data sector group with the lowest ease of receiving are 'Local Community Domain', 'Changes in Domestic and International Conditions', and 'Provision and Utilization of Daily Life Services'. Lastly, in-depth research is needed on how to raise each rural spatial planning data supply stakeholder to the position of player. Stakeholders of 'University Institutions' and 'Public Enterprises and Research Institutes' should give those who participate in the formulation of rural spatial plans access to the raw data collected for public work. Stakeholders of 'Private company' need to come up with realistic measures to build a data pool centered on consultative bodies between existing private companies and then prepare a step-by-step strategy to fully open it by participating various stakeholders. In order to induce 'Village Residents and Associations' stakeholders to play a leading role as owners and producers of data, personnel should be trained to collect and record data related to the village. In addition, support measures should be prepared to continue these activities.

조건부 가치측정법을 이용한 공해상 해양생명자원 확보의 경제적 가치 추정 (Estimating the Economic Value of Securing the High Seas Marine Biological Resources Using the Contingent Valuation Method)

  • 전 세계 해양의 대부분을 차지하는 공해는 해양바이오산업 성장에 필수적인 귀중한 해양 자원을 보유하고 있다. 이러한 글로벌 노력의 최전선에는 한국의 공해 자원 확보 및 기초효능(기초물질) 탐사사업이 있다. 이 연구는 대중의 인식을 측정하고 프로젝트의 이점을 정량화하여 향후 정책 결정에 대한 통찰력을 제공하고자 했다. 결과에 따르면, 연평균 지불의사액(WTP)은 3,778.8원으로, 전체 국민으로 확장하면 약 815.4억 원에 해당하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 의미는 두 가지이다. WTP를 기반으로 공해상 해양생명자원 확보의 경제적 가치는 연간 약 815억 원에 달할 정도로 상당하다. 이는 투자에 대한 WTP를 고려할 때 향후 정책 수립을 위한 중요한 참고 자료로 제공 가능하다. 해양생물자원에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 반면, 대중의 인식은 상대적으로 낮은 편이다. 그러나 본 사업은 해양바이오산업에 필수적인 데이터베이스를 구축하고 국제 해양생물자원을 확보하는데 있어서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 대중의 관심과 지속적인 지원은 이 사업 뿐만 아니라 향후 정책 구현에도 매우 중요하다. 대중의 인식을 높이는 전략은 필수적이며, 연구 결과는 향후 정책 결정에 귀중한 의견을 제공한다.

Feeding and Management System to Reduce Environmental Pollution in Swine Production - Review -

  • In this manuscript, several effective feeding and management systems to reduce environmental pollution in swine production have been briefly introduced. It is logical that reducing the excretion of nutrients in manure should be the first step to reduce the environmental impact of pig production. it is evident that the excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus can be reduced when more digestible or available feedstuffs are used. Also, it is well known that proper feed processing can reduce anti nutritional factors (ANF) and improve nutrient digestibilities. Supplementation of effective feed additives can reduce excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus due to efficient feed utilization. These include enzymes (e.g., phytase), antibiotics, probiotics, organic acids and growth hormones ($\beta$-agonists and porcine somatotropin). One of the most effective ways to reduce pollutants from swine manure is to use synthetic amino acids in feed manufacturing. Many studies showed that reduction of 2 to 4% unit (U) of dietary protein with supplemental amino acid (AA) could dramatically reduce (15 to 20%) nitrogen excretion. Regarding feeding strategies, it has been recognized that phase feeding regimen could be used to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous excretion by feeding pigs in better agreement with age and physiological state. Feeding barrows and gilts separately, known as split sex feeding, can also decrease excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus. With the increasing concerns on the negative impact of animal production systems on the environment, animal nutritionists and producers should be aware that sustainability of animal agriculture is as important as high production performance. Therefore, some feeding and management strategies described in this manuscript will help to reduce environmental pollution in swine production. Proper combination of feeding regimen and environment-friendly diet formulation through nutritional approach will be more effective to reduce nutrient excretion in swine production system compared to single approach to do so.

Hydrogel and Platelet-Rich Plasma Combined Treatment to Accelerate Wound Healing in a Nude Mouse Model

  • Background Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains high concentrations of growth factors involved in wound healing. Hydrogel is a 3-dimensional, hydrophilic, high-molecular, reticular substance generally used as a dressing formulation to accelerate wound healing, and also used as a bio-applicable scaffold or vehicle. This study aimed to investigate the effects of PRP and hydrogel on wound healing, in combination and separately, in an animal wound model. Methods A total of 64 wounds, with 2 wounds on the back of each nude mouse, were classified into 4 groups: a control group, a hydrogel-only group, a PRP-only group, and a combined-treatment group. All mice were assessed for changes in wound size and photographed on scheduled dates. The number of blood vessels was measured in all specimens. Immunohistochemical staining was used for the analysis of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. Results Differences in the decrease and change in wound size in the combined-treatment group were more significant than those in the single-treatment groups on days 3, 5, 7, and 10. Analysis of the number of blood vessels through histological examination showed a pattern of increase over time that occurred in all groups, but the combined-treatment group exhibited the greatest increase on days 7 and 14. Immunohistochemical staining showed that VEGF expression in the combined-treatment group exhibited its highest value on day 7. Conclusions This experiment demonstrated improved wound healing using a PRP-hydrogel combined treatment compared to either treatment individually, resulting in a decrease in wound size and a shortening of the healing period.

열중량 분석기와 질량가속기를 이용한 목재·플라스틱 복합재의 목질섬유함량 분석 (Determination of Wood Flour Content in WPC Through Thermogravimetic Analysis and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry)

  • WPC 내 목질섬유 함량 분석은 신뢰도 높은 목재 플라스틱 복합재(WPC) 소비시장 형성을 위해 상당히 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 polypropylene과 목질섬유를 복합화한 단순 WPC 배합 조건에서 WPC 내 목질섬유 함량에 대한 분석을 TGA를 이용한 열분석 방법과 AMS를 이용한 바이오 탄소 함량 분석 방법을 통해 진행하였다. TGA를 통한 열분해 분석법은 $5^{\circ}C/min$의 승온속도로 고분자 PP의 최대 미분 온도를 이용하여 신뢰도 높은 WPC 내 목질섬유 함량에 관한 검량선을 얻을 수 있었다. TGA와 AMS의 분석 방법 비교에 있어서는, 바이오 탄소 함량을 이용하는 AMS 분석법이 더 높은 신뢰성을 보여주었다.

  • 오리엔탈과실파리(Bactrocera dorsalis)는 주요 검역 대상으로 지정된 해충이다. 이 해충에 대한 고감도 모니터링과 진단 기술이 초기 방역 처리에 요구된다. 본 연구는 오리엔탈과실파리를 유인하여 치사시킬 목적으로 메틸유제놀과 생물농약을 혼합한 왁스형 방출기를 제작하였다. 본 연구는 또한 5종의 주요 검역 과실파리(오리엔탈과실파리, 오이과실파리, 퀸즐랜드과실파리, 말레이시아과실파리, 지중해과실파리)에 대한 PCR 진단프라이머를 개발하였다. 이상의 모니터링용 왁스방출기과 분자진단기술을 말레이시아 코타키나발루 지역에서 실증 시험하였다.
