Development and properties of jointed Bi-2223 superconductor tape

  • We evaluated the electric properties of Bi-2223 jointed tapes processed by both resistive- and supercondcuting-joint methods. For the resistive-joint, filler materials of wood metal, Pb/Sn, In, and silver paste were used, whereas, for the superconductive-joint, the lap joint method were used. In the resistive-joint tape, it was observed that the electrical properties such as current transport property, n-value, and contact resistance of the tape were significantly related to the resistivity of filler materials. On the other hand, in the superconducting-joint tape, the current transport property was dependent on the uniaxial pressure. Specifically, the current transport property varied 50 to 80% with uniaxial pressure, probably due to the irregular microstructure in the transition region.

  • For practical applications, the evaluation of reliability or endurance of HTS conductors is necessary. The mechanical properties and the critical current, $I_c$, of multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes, externally reinforced with stainless steel foils, subjected to high cycle fatigue loading in the longitudinal direction were investigated at 77K. The S-N curves were obtained and its transport property was evaluated with the increase of repeated cycles at different stress amplitudes. The effect of the stress ratio, R, on the $I_c$ degradation behavior under fatigue loading was also examined considering the practical application situation of HTS tapes. Microstructure observation was conducted in order to understand the L degradation mechanism in fatigued Bi-2223 tapes.

  • AC losses per cycle properties at 77K have been investigated on the Ag sheathed Bi2223 wire through two kinds of measuring methods(transport method and magnetic method). In case of transport method, the absolute value of losses agree with the results of Norris theory(strip and ellipse). In case of 19-filamentary tape, AC transport losses almost agree with those of magnetic method. In case of 1-filamentary tape, However, AC losses of magnetic method is smaller than AC transport losses

  • This paper deals with the characteristic analysis of the flux damper with respect to the load, and the stability of Ag/Bi-2223 tapes in a high-Tc superconducting (HTS) synchronous motor. To find out the magnetic field distribution in a detailed model of the actual motor, the experimentally measured currents of the armature and the field windings are used as input parameters. The simulation results show that the flux damper shields the time varying field up to 10%, reduces armature reactance during the motor operation and during load changes, improving the stable motor operation. And it was observed that the flux damper generates loss by means of leakage flux, but this is not significant and it doesn't degrade the performance of the TS synchronous motor.

  • Superconducting power cable is one of the most promising energy application of high-$T_c$ superconductors (HTS). A prototype HTS cable have been constructed multi-layer cable using Bi-2223 tape and tested. The result shows that the total transport current of HTS cable in $LN_2$ was 475[A], and transport current passed through almost the outer layer (2-layer). Also, AC transport losses in outer layer of HTS cable was proportion to $I^2$ and higher than losses of inner layer. As magnetic distribution were concentrated on outer layer.

  • AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$_{c}$, superconducting power cables which consist of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a cylindrical former. In this paper, the ac loss characteristics in the 3-conductor have investigated experimentally. The loss test results indicate that the ac loss is not related to the arrangement of Bi-2223 tapes, contact position and applied frequency. The measured losses in face-to-face arrangement are larger than those in edge-to-edge arrangement. The measured losses in the 3-conductor also agree well with the sum of the transport losses measured in each Bi-2223 tape.e.

  • AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-$T_c$ superconducting power cables which consist of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a former. In the cables, the tapes have different critical currents intrinsically. And they are electrically connected to each other and current leads. In this work we have prepared a conductor composed of three Bi-2223 tapes with different critical currents. The critical current characteristics in the conductor have experimentally investigated. The results show that for uniform current distributions the conductor's critical current is proportional to the critical current of the Bi-2223 tape to which a voltage lead is attached. However it depends on the current non-uniformity parameter in the conductor rather than the tape's critical currents for nonuniform current distributions.

Effect of pre-annealing conditions on critical current density of Bi-2223 tapes

  • Bi-2223 superconducting wires with 55 filaments were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with different heat-treatment histories. Two kinds of powders were prepared. One was pre-annealed at 760-820 $^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure, and the other was only calcined state. Before rolling process, round wires were pre-annealed at 760 -820 $^{\circ}C$ and in a low oxygen partial pressure. We confirmed that pre-annealing step was to transform Bi-2212 orthorhombic structure from Bi-2212 tetragonal structure and to reduce the formation of second phases at superconducting wire. However Bi-2223 phases were formed at higher pre-annealing temperature. Bi-2223 conductor was needed frequently annealing at low temperature because pre-annealing at precursor powder brought about decrease in workability. We could achieve highest Je of 6500 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the tape using Bi-2212 orthorhombic phase by introduced slightly overheating at the 1st sintering process.

  • In this study, we estimate the thermal conductivity of stainless steel reinforced Bi-2223/Ag tape which was made from American Superconductor. The equipments for thermal conductivity measurement was set up using conduction cooled cryocooler. Two direction of thermal conductivity was measured. The one is the direction of cut length, and the other is direction of transverse of wounded coil with insulation material. It was observed that the thermal conductivity of transverse direction of coil was extremely lower than that of cut length direction. It was mainly seems that superconducting filaments and insulation material were effected on thermal conductivity in thermal conductivity of transverse direction.
