Benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated in Yongdam-dam and Hapcheon-dam resions from June to October 2011, Korea. Yongdam-dam and Hapcheon-dam are geographically contiguous, but they are classified as other water system. Experiment site(YE-1, 2, 3; HE-1, 2, 3) which is thought to be affected by dam, control site(YC-1, 2; HC-1, 2) which is thought not to be affected by dam were selected. Species composition, macroinvertebrate communities, composition of the functional feeding groups, habitat orientied groups and community stability were assessed Yongdam-dam and Hapcheon-dam regions. Ten sites were selected for quantitative(Surber sampler $30cm{\times}30cm$) of benthic macroinvertebrates. As a results, a total of 6,369 individuals including 69 species, 33 families, 12 orders, 6 classes and 4 phyla were recognized in Yongdam-dam region. Also, a total of 5,728 individuals including 81 species, 44 families, 13 orders, 5 classes and 4 phyla were recognized in Hapcheon-dam region. Dominance index was 0.27~0.50(mean${\pm}$SD $0.38{\pm}0.09$), diversity index was 2.22~2.97($2.67{\pm}0.29$), evenness index was 0.63~0.76($0.72{\pm}0.06$) and richness index was 4.43~7.06($5.69{\pm}0.99$) in Yongdam-dam region. Dominance index was 0.40~0.81($0.59{\pm}0.18$), diversity index was 1.40~2.39($2.00{\pm}0.43$), evenness index was 0.38~0.68($0.56{\pm}0.13$) and richness index was 4.04~5.80($4.95{\pm}0.70$) in Hapcheon-dam region. In the functional feeding groups, filtering-collectors and gathering-collectors were the highest in the whole sites. In the habitat orientied groups, burrowers, clingers and swimmers were considerably occupied in all sites. As a result of community stability analysis, experiment sites has been identified much as species high resistance and resilience to environmental changes in Yongdam-dam. Control sites has been identified much as species low resistance and resilience to environmental changes in Hapcheon-dam. Species belonging to the Igroup is considered to be important in the river ecosystem stability of large dams downstream areas.

This study was performed to investigate the community structure and health assessment of macrobenthic assemblages in Cheonsu Bay, West Coast of Korea. Total species number was 224 and mean density was $1,940ind./m^2$, both of which were dominated by polychaete worms (111 species and $1,213ind./m^2$). In terms of density, the major dominant species were the bivalve Theora fragilis ($280{\pm}213ind./m^2$), the polychaetes Heteromastus filiformis ($254{\pm}218ind./m^2$), Lumbrineris longifolia ($216{\pm}41ind./m^2$), Mediomastus californiensis ($158{\pm}97ind./m^2$) and the amphipod Eriopisella sechellensis ($167{\pm}100ind./m^2$). As a result of community statistics (cluster analysis and nMDS ordination), the macrobenthic community structure was classified two major groups (inner and mouth of bay) and two stations (station 2 near Ganwol dyke in spring and summer). The Benthic Pollution Index (BPI) and AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) were applied to assess the benthic ecological status. During the sampling periods, the BPI Index values varied between 11 (bad status) and 92 (high status). On the other hand, the AMBI Index values was ranged between 1.34 (good status) and 4.39 (poor status). In conclusion, in terms of the mean BPI and AMBI Index values, the ecological status of Cheonsu Bay were moderate status (ecotone stage) and good status, respectively.
This study examined the benthic diatom community distribution, land cover/use and water quality in relation to stream shape complexity (SSC) in the Seom River watershed. SSC showed a significant relation to the riparian land cover/use pattern and also water quality variables of the studied streams. Streams with high stream shape complexity (HSC) appeared to have a high proportion of forest and farmland, while streams having a low stream shape complexity (LSC) appeared to have high proportion of city. Streams with lower SSC showed higher nutrients concentration in the stream waters. Benthic diatom species composition and dominant species appeared to be similar regardless of SSC differences among the studied streams, while the variation of diatom density was manifested with SSC. The relative abundance of dominant benthic diatoms varied with SSC. Saprophilic diatoms were dominant in the streams of LSC, while saproxenic diatoms were dominant in the streams of HSC. During the evaluation of biological water quality using the benthic diatom indices, Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) and Diatom Assemblage Index to organic water pollution (DAIpo), the streams of LSC generally showed poorer water quality than those of MSC (Middle stream shape complexity) and HSC. In particular, BOD, TP, and $PO_4$-P showed significant relationships with DAIpo. In conclusion, shape complexity of streams in the Seom River watershed showed a close relation with benthic diatom distribution. This relation seemed to primarily be resulted from the effect of proximate factors, such as water quality, which might be affected by the land use types determining the degree of SSC.
The marine algal flora and community structure of Gahakri in Jindo Gun, southern coast of Korea, was investigated monthly during September, 1993-August, 1994. As the results, a total of 87 species including 11 greens, 15 browns and 61 reds was identified. The marine algal flora was classified as the mixed flora based on the species composition. The dominant species of algal community throughout the year was Gloiopeltis furcata, and the subdominants were Sargassum thunbegii, Ulva pertusa and Hizikia fusiformis. In their vertical distribution, the species of algal community distributed yearly (or seasonally) from upper to lower intertidal zones were Gloiopeltis furcata-Corallina pilulifera, Myelophycus simplex, Gloiopeltis tenax (May$\~$October), Dumontia simplex, Sargassum thunbergii-Hizikia fusifomis, Ulva pertusa, Chondracanthus intemedius, Carpopeltis affinis.

Subtidal benthic macroalgal flora and community structure on barren grounds were examined seasonally along vertical shore gradients on the rocky shore of Hajung, Pohang, on the southeast coast of Korea, from February 2005 to November 2006. Twenty-six seaweed species were identified, including 5 green, 7 brown, and 14 red algae. The number of seaweed species ranged between 7 and 17 among seasons and between 13 and 20 species were found in vertical gradients along the shore. Over the study period, average seaweed biomass (g wet wt/$m^2$) was 299.88 g and it ranged seasonally from 120.99 to 620.00 g. Seaweed biomass declined with increasing seawater depth and ranged between 323.06 and 593.68 g. The dominant seaweed species, in terms of biomass, were Desmarestia ligulata and Sargassum honeri, which grew at depths between 5 and 10 m. The red alga Delisea pulchra was also abundant at a depth of 15 m. No seasonal patterns were found in community indices. Along vertical shore gradients, community indices showed different patterns; the dominance index increased and the richness, evenness, and diversity indices decreased with seawater depth.
Community dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates in response to natural disturbances (flooding and water temperature) were investigated in the Suyong and Soktae Streams in Busan from October 1997 to September 1998. Oigochaeta and Chironomus, organic polluted indicators, were dominant and various taxa were observed at the study sites. The density and biomass of two dominant taxa increased in warm months while the indicators were washed away in the flooding season. From October to February when the water temperature was less than $15^{\circ}C$, Oligochaeta appeared to be dominant at the Soktae Stream. In contrast various taxa were collected at the Suyong stream. The densities of Oligochaeta and Chironomus increased at the Soktae and the Suyong streams in March. Due to the big flooding in April, the density of dominant taxa decreased abruptly. The community structure showed differences patterns in the flooding season at two streams from June to August. In the Soktae stream, the density increased in August. The reverse patterns were observed in the Suyong stream, washing out in June followed by slow recovery of densities in the fellowing months. Density and biomass showed relatively higher correlations in most taxa. CCA (Canonocial Correspondence Analysis) showed that taxa was different response to different environmental factors.

Benthic marine algal flora and community structure at Chuksan on the mid-east coast of Korea were investigated seasonally from July 2007 to May 2009. Ninety-eight seaweed species were identified, including 13 green, 23 brown and 62 red algal species. The number of species found ranged between 33 and 63 among seasons. Two green (Ulva australis and Codium arabicum), three brown (Dictyota dichotoma, Sargassum fusiforme and Sargassum yezoense), and eleven red algae (Corallina pilulifera, Lithophyllum okamurae, Pachymeniopsis elliptica, Grateloupia filicina, G. cornea, Hildenbrandia rubra, Chondrus ocellatus, Acrosorium polyneurum, Chondria crassicaulis, Polysiphonia morrowii and Symphyocladia latiuscula) were observed throughout the survey period. Average marine algal biomass was $629.68g\;dry\;wt\;m^{-2}$ and it ranged seasonally from 119.30 to $1,660.96g\;dry\;wt\;m^{-2}$. The vertical distribution of marine algae was characterized by Corallina pilulifera and Sargassum spp. in the intertidal zone; Sargassum spp. at 1 m depth; Sargassum spp. and melobesioidean algae at 5 m depth; and melobesioidean algae at 10 m depth.
The species composition of the fish community was studied in four streams where fish kills have previously occurred in recent years; Worun Stream, Seo Stream, Jangnam Stream, and the Anyang Stream. The number of fish species varied from 22 to 86% compared to the number of fish species pre-fish kill. The recovery of fish populations in the streams seems to be determined by water quality and the presence of artificial structures in the streams. The Jangnam Stream, where alkaline pH caused a fish kill, showed a high recovery of fish species due to improvements in water quality. Anyang Stream had a low number of species, possibly because dissolved oxygen concentrations were intermittently low. Artificial structures in streams had a negative impact the recovery of fish species, particularly for benthic fish species. It appears that fish populations can recover rapidly when water quality improves or the movement of fish community is unimpeded. However, water quality and artificial structures in many streams in Korea still present adverse conditions for fish survival, deterring the recovery of fish populations. To conserve fish populations in streams, habitat all owing unimpeded movement for fish and controls on pollutant inputs are needed.

This study was conducted to investigate the community structure and distributional pattern of meiobenthos in the deep-sea bottom of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone of northeastern Pacific during July 2001. Examination of sediment samples collected on the eight survey station showed that there were 10 different types of meiobenthos. The most abundant meiobenthic animals were nematodes in all stations. Sarcomastigophorans, benthic harpacticoids were next abundant meiobenthos. Vertical distribution of meiobenthic animals showed the highest individual numbers in the surface sediment layers of 0-1 cm depth and showed more steep decreasing trend as sediment gets deeper on the stations of high latitude located in $16-17^{\circ}N$. Horizontal distribution of meiobenthic animal in the study area within CCFZ showed high densities of meiobenthos at the stations had few manganese nodules on their sediment surface in the site of low latitude. For size distribution analyses showed that animals which fit into the sieve mesh size of 0.063 mm were abundant.
An intertidal marine benthic algal vegetation and vertical distribution at Kangnung and it’s vicinity, the eastern coast of Korea was investigated to clarify the community structure and vertical distribution by quadrat method. Marine algae identified from the area were 116 species; 15 green, 31 brown and 70 red algae. The dominant species were Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, Undaria pinnatifida, Dictyota dichotoma, Gelidium amansii, Corallina pilulifera, Carpopeltis affinis, Grateloupia filicina, Pachymeniopsis elliptica and Chondrus ocellatus at study sites. The vertical distribution of intertidal marine algae was divided into three distinct zones. They were characterized by Porphyra tenera at the upper, Enteromorpha spp. and Ulva pertusa at the middle, and Sargassum thunbergii, Hizikia fusiformis and Pachymeniopsis elliptica at the lower zones, respectively. The vertical distribution of subtidal zone algae were characterized by Laminaria spp. at 15m depth and Kjellmaniella crassifolia at 15 to 25 m depths, whereas Agarum cribrosum was dominant at the lower zone than 25 m depth.
