  • Objective : Depressive symptoms often coexist with other anxiety disorder symptoms. Furthermore, an anxiety disorder that is comorbid with a depressive disorder results in more severe symptoms and a poorer outcome prognosis. To understand the construct of depressive symptoms in anxiety disorder, this study investigated the factor structure of the Beck Depression Inventory among outpatients with anxiety disorders. Methods : All data were from psychiatric department outpatients at a university-affiliated hospital. We conducted a principal component analysis using data from 194 outpatients with DSM-IV anxiety disorders and calculated goodness-of-fit-indices. Results : Exploratory factor analysis revealed a four factor structure--Cognitive-affective symptoms (Factor 1), Somatic symptoms (Factor 2), Self-reproach (Factor 3), and Hypochondriasis/indecisiveness (Factor 4)--and a 57% total variance. This four-factor model demonstrated an acceptable level of model fit, and it fit better than did a three-factor solution from the literature on depressive disorder. Conclusion : This study's results suggest a difference in the construct of self-reported depressive symptoms in anxiety disorders. These findings also support a dimensional approach to studying anxiety and depression. Further studies may benefit from including comorbid depressive disorder and its influence on anxiety disorders.

  • Objectives: To examine clinical effects of Korean medical treatment on depressive disorder. Methods: Medical records of 102 patients diagnosed with depressive disorder who were treated with Korean medical treatment (herbal-medication, acupuncture, Korean psychotherapy) for at least 12 weeks and measured psychological scales (Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI)) every 4 weeks were analyzed. Results: After 12 weeks of treatment, BDI-II, STAI-X-1/2, BAI, and STAXI-S/T all decreased statistically significantly. STAI-X-1 and BAI were significantly decreased throughout the treatment interval (comparisons every 4 weeks). The other four scales decreased significantly from 0 to 4 weeks and from 8 to 12 weeks. Conclusions: Treatment for depressive disorder with Korean Medicine was effective not only in improving overall symptoms of depressed patients, but also in improving accompanying anxiety, anger, and physical symptoms. In addition, since all scores were gradually decreased, continuous treatment would be important.

  • The aim of this study was to assess effects of aromatherapy on anxiety and depression of caregivers for patients in rehabilitation therapy and to provide basic data for the aromatherapy. Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) for the preliminary assessment of anxiety and depressive mood were administered to caregivers for patients in rehabilitation therapy in Chungbuk National University Hospital. Forty two out of seventy subjects who got scores above 10 in BDI were selected. Forty two Participants were divided into orange group, lavender group and control group. They had got the aromatherapy by using the lamp diffusion method for 4 weeks. Only forty participants completed a trial. Effects of the aromatherapy were measured using BAI, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale(HAM-A), BDI, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAM-D), Self Esteem Scale(SES) and Index of Wellbeing(IOWB) before and after the aromatherapy. Orange group showed significant difference in the change of BDI scores compared with control group. Lavender group showed significant difference in the mean change of BAI, BDI and IOWB scores compared with control group. These results suggested that aromatherapy with orange oil was effective for depression and the aromatherapy with lavender oil was effective for anxiety as well as depression.
