  • The free vibration of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by hydro dynamic bearings (HDB) in an HDD is analyzed by FEM. The spinning flexible disk is described using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. It is discretized by annular sector element. The rotating spindle which includes the clamp, hub, permanent magnet and yoke, is modeled by Timoshenko beam including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structure with a complex shape which includes stator core, housing, base plate, sleeve and thrust pad is modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element with rotational degrees of freedom to satisfy the geometric compatibility. The dynamic coefficients of HDB are calculated from the HDB analysis program, which solves the perturbed Reynolds equation using FEM. Introducing the virtual nodes and the rigid link constraints defined in the center of HDB, beam elements of the shaft are connected to the solid elements of the sleeve and thrust pad through the spring and damper element. The global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to the state-space matrix-vector equation, and the associated eigen value problem is solved by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of this research is verified by comparing the numerical results of the natural frequencies with the experimental ones. Also the effect of supporting structures to the natural modes of the total HDD system is rigorously analyzed.

  • It is very important to arrange the artificial teeth correctly in bucco-lingual (labio- lingual) relation in reconstrcting dentition. Although many anatomic landmarks and techniques have been reported over the years, they are based on westerns. So this study was performd to examine the horizontal relations of mandibular teeth in Korean dentulous adults. 200 volunteers(mean age 22.9) who had natural dentition were selected. The impressions were taken with irreversible hydrocolloid impression material and mandibular study models were fabricated using class I dental stone. Then they were measured with 3-dimensional measuring device specially designed for this study. The results were as follows ; It is better to consider the lingual cusps of the lower posterior teeth as a guide than the linguoaxial surfaces of the lower posterior teeth, arranging the lower posterior teeth buccally to the line which starts from the mesial aspect of the lower canine and continue backward to the lingual aspect of the retromolar pad. It is better to arrange the fossae of the lower posterior teeth buccally to the line which starts from the cusp tip of the lower canine and continue backward to the top of the retromolar pad. The positions of the lower posterior teeth in the denture-bearing area ; considering the fossa as a guide, the 2nd premolar was positioned in center. considering the buccal cusp as a guide, the 1st molar and the 2nd molar were positioned in center. the distance ratio(d/a) was incresed constantly from the lower canine to the 2nd molar d ; the distance between the buccal vestibule(the lowest point) and the buccal cusp tips of the lower posterior teeth. a ; the distance between the buccal vestibule(the lowest point) and the lingual vestibule(the lowest point). The lower canine was positioned lingually($0.11{\pm}0.13$) than the labial vestibule, and the central incisor and the lateral incisor were positioned almost in the imaginary perpendicular plane of the labial vestibule(the lowest point).

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of sit-to-stand training on unstable surfaces in individuals with stroke. Nineteen subjects with chronic stroke were divided into two groups: an experimental group (10 subjects) and a control group (9 subjects). They received 30 minutes of Neuro-developmental therapy (NDT) treatment, and sit-to-stand exercise for 15 minutes three times a week for four weeks. During the sit-to-stand training, the experimental group performed on an unstable AIREX balance pad, but the control group performed on a stable surface. Balance ability and weight-bearing distribution during quiet standing were measured before and after training period using the 7-item Berg balance scale-3P (BBS-3P) and the Five-times-sit-to-stand test (FTSST). In addition, the muscle strength of the knee extensor was evaluated before and after the training period. The results were as follows: 1) The weight-bearing distribution forward of the affected leg, increased significantly in the experimental group after the four-week intervention (p<.05), 2) The 7-item BBS-3P and FTSST increased significantly in the experimental group after the four-week intervention (p<.05), 3) The knee extensor muscle strength in both groups increased significantly after the four-week intervention (p<.05). In conclusion, the results of this study did not show that the sit-to-stand training on an unstable surface was more effective than on a stable surface. However, the results suggested that sit-to-stand training is effective in the balance training of stroke patients.

  • Purpose : The object of this study was to observe anti-cachexic effects of Kwibi-tang extracts (KBTe) on non-small cell lung carcinoma (squamous epithelial carcinoma), NCI-H520, xenograft Balb/c nu-nu nude mice. Methods : Three different dosages of KBTe, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg were orally administered once a day for 42 days from 11 days after tumor cell inoculation. Six groups, each of 8 mice per group were used in the present study. Changes on the body weight, the epididymal fat weight and serum IL-6 levels were detected with the thicknesses of deposited cervical brown adipose tissue and their mean diameters to monitor the tumor-related anticachexic effects. Results : Deceases on the body weight and gains were also demonstrated in tumor-bearing control with increases of serum IL-6 levels, decreases of epididymal fat pad weight, atrophic changes of cervical brown adipose tissues. These are means that tumor-related cachexia are induced by tumor cell inoculations in the present study. However, these tumor-related cachexia were markedly inhibited by all three different dosages of KBTe treatment as compared with tumor-bearing control. 5-FU showed somewhat deteriorated the tumor-related cachexia in the present study. Conclusion : The results obtained in this study suggest that over 50 mg/kg of KBTe showed favorable anticachexic effects on the NCI-H520 cell xenograft. However, detail mechanism studies should be conducted in future with the screening of the biological active compounds in this herb.

  • SThe rigidities of bridge substructures are the important data in the rail-bridge interaction analysis in Korean High -Speed Railway. This experimental study is being performed because of followings. 1) More correct longitudinal stiffness of the structure including substructure should be considered in the calculation of stresses in rails. 2) There are many uncertainties in the design and construction of the piers and foundations. 3) Actual guideline for the rigidities of piers and foundations in the design is necessary. 4) Measurement on the rigidity of pier according to the types of piers, foundations and soil-conditions is needed. Curve for estimating the total rigidity of substructure will be obtained through this and further experimental studies. It may be used in the analysis of Korean High-Speed Railway bridge and then, longitudinal stresses in the rails can be estimated more accurately. One pair of piers, which consist of pot-bearing for fixed support and pad-bearing for movable support, are loaded by steel frame devices with steel wire ropes and hydraulic jack. The responses which are measured at each loading stages in those field tests are displacements and tilted angles on the top and bottom of piers. This study is being performed testing and analysis about several piers in the construction field.

  • Among many kinds of introduced free flaps, scapular freeflap is one of the most popularly using modalities in fasciocutaneous defect coverage with minimal donor defect and easier procedure and constant vascular patterns of the donor. Many surgeons who had experience of this flap pointed out deficit of the reliable sensation of the transplanted flap is the main shortcoming of the scapular free flap. If we can subjugate that point, scapular free flap is the most excellent procedure in such a cases as heel pad reconstruction and hand reconstruction which are relatively important to have skin with protective sensation. Author performed anatomical literature review, 10 cadaveric dissections and 12 clinical dissections. In surgical anatomical aspect, the upper six dorsal rami of the thoracic nerves have medial branches which pierce Longissimus thoracis and Multifidus muscle with small cutaneous twigs which pierce Latissimus dorsi and Trapezius muscle. Among that cutaneous twigs, several twigs distribute to the skin of the back from midline to lateral aspect which territory is identical to scapular free flap. We analysed clinical experiences of that sensory bearing scapular free flap surgical anatomy and one year follow-up studies with several results. 1) Two to three cutaneous twigs which pierced from the Trapezius muscle over the scapular free flap region. 2) Each twigs has two to four nerve fascicles with small artery. 3) The nerve distributed to the ordinary scapular free flap and large enough size and pedicle length to neurorrhapy with various recipient site nerves. 4) The inconvenience of this procedure is the vascular pedicle and nerve pedicle have opposite directions, vascular pedicle of that comes from lateral direction from subscapular vessels, but nerve pedicle comes from medial direction from trapezius muscle. Author can found constant cutaneous nerve branches which come from piercing the Trapezius. This nerves are helpful for protective sensation in transplanted scapular free flap. We can't had enough follow-up and evaluation of the nerve function of this procedure, we need continuous research works to application of this procedure. The in conveniences come from directional differences of pedicle can solve with longer harvest neural pedicle and change direction of the neural pedicle.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of calcaneal taping on peak plantar pressure of rearfoot and forefoot while walking. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects with normal feet participated in this study. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) no disturbance of gait and foot pain, (2) normal range of motion of ankle joint, (3) no foot deformity. Pedoscan was used for recording of plantar pressure data during walking. The participants walked along a 12-m walkway before and after application of calcaneal taping. The plantar pressure gait was measured 3 times under barefoot and calcaneal taping conditions randomly at a speed practiced with the metronome during gait. The peak plantar pressure data were calculated for medial and lateral areas of the rearfoot and forefoot. The paired t-test was used to determine significant differences in peak plantar pressure of rearfoot and forefoot before and after application of calcaneal taping. A p-value less than 0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: The calcaneal taping resulted in statistically significant decreases in peak plantar pressure of the rearfoot (medial side: p=0.03; lateral side: p=0.01). However, there were no significant changes in peak plantar pressure of the forefoot (medial side: p=0.45; lateral side: p=0.40). Conclusion: The calcaneal taping is recommended to reduce plantar pressure of the rearfoot in weight-bearing activities in subjects with plantar heel pain caused by atrophy of the fat pad.

  • This paper presents the construction of an ultra-precision machining system and machining experiments using the developed system. The system is composed of air bearing system, granite bed, air pad, and linear feeding mechanism. The cutting conditions have great effect on the surface quality in ultra-precision machining. the ultra-precision machining is mainly processed by several ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth of cut and feed rate. For this, tools with sharper cutting edge and less tool wear are needed. To satisfy these requirement, diamond is generally used as a tool material for ultra-precision machining. In order to evaluate the cutting characteristics of the PCD and MCD tools on the aluminum alloy, the machining experiments performed using the developed system.

  • A new method using a transfer function was proposed in the previous paper for analyzing motion errors of hydrostatic tables. The calculated motion errors by the new method, named as the transfer (unction method (TFM), were compared with the results by the conventional multi pad method, and the validity of the proposed method was theoretically verified. In this paper, the relationship between rail form error and motion errors of a hydrostatic table is examined theoretically in order to comprehand so-called 'the averaging effect of an oil film', and the characteristics of the motion errors in a hydrostatic table is tested. The tested hydrostatic table has three single-side pads in the vertical direction and three pairs of double-sides pads in the horizontal direction. The motion errors are tested for three rails which have different form errors. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results calculated by the TFM, and both results show good agreement. From the results, it is shown that the TFM is very effective to analyze the motion errors of hydrostatic tables.
