  • In general, structures have various joints such as bonded joint, bolted joint, bearing joint and welded joint. Dynamic modelling of such joints has been the current topic of interest. In this study, the dynamic modelling of plate structures with bonded joint was investigated by using modal testing, sensitivity analysis and condensation-inverse condensation method of FEM. A proper modelling procedure was proposed and the validity was verified.

  • A diagnostic method of anisotropy and asymmetry in rotor systems utilizing the two-sided directional spectra of the operating responses has been presented and tested with a laboratory flexible rotor-bearing system. The experimental results show that the directional spectra can be effectively used for the diagnosis of anisotropy and/or asymmetry in rotor systmes by the investigation of -1X and +2X components in the directional spectrum of unbalance and gravity responses.

  • Over the past ten years we have wethnessed a revolution in metalcutting in the field of High Speed Machining. As machining speeds continue to increase, particularly spindle RPM, forces created by unbalance in the spindle, cutting tool, and toolholder require close attaention. It has been observed that these forces, if left uncompensated, can results in poor surface finish, loss of tool life, and spindle bearing failure. The sources of this unbalance needs to be identified and elimated in order to create a smooth, vibration free condition and allow the machine tool and its spindle to operate properly.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the shear wall location in rigid frames on the dynamic behavior of a roof structure due to vertical and horizontal earthquake motions. The study deals with a gabled long span beam supported by two story rigid frames with shear walls. The earthquake response analysis is carried out to study the responses of the roof: vibration mode, natural period, bending moment and horizontal shear force of the bearings. The study results in the following conclusions: First, a large horizontal stiffness difference between the side frames is caused by the shear wall location, which results in a large vertical vibration of the roof and a large shear force at the side bearings. Second, in this case, the seismic design method for ordinary buildings is not useful in determining the distribution of the static equivalent loads for the seismic design of this kind of long span structures.

  • Silver nanoparticles (<10 nm) were prepared in ultrasonic vibration-induced nanodroplets of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) in combination with hydrophobic room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The Ag-precursor used were silver (I) complex, Ag$_2$(ehac)$_2$(eha)$_2$ (ehac = 2-ethylhexylammonium carbamate; eha = 2-ethylhexylamine), in IPA, while 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids bearing $SbF_6^-$, $PF_6^-$ and $NTf_2^-$ as counter anions were used as RTILs. During sonication for 10-90 min at room temperature, uniform silver nanoparticles with mean sizes of 2 to 8 nm were rapidly synthesized. Transmission electron micrographs also confirmed that silver nanoparticles have a spherical shape and diverse sizes depending on the reaction time (10-90 min).

  • Dynamic analysis using impulse responses is formulated to estimate effect of slider rail shape on dynamic responses in near-field optical recording drive. Impulse responses are obtained on numerical nonlinear model including rigid motion of a slider and fluid motion of an air bearing under the slider. Dynamic characteristics of slider motion are evaluated by utilizing the decay ratio of impulse responses and modal frequencies from frequency response functions. The dynamic characteristics of the designed NFR slider are checked by comparing those of a HDD slider(Nutcracker). Also, sensitivities of slider Position conditions and rotation speed on the dynamic characteristics are investigated.

  • This paper presents an efficient modeling and dynamic analysis method for open cracked rotor bearing systems. An equivalent bending spring model is introduced to represent the structural weakening effect in the presence of cracks. The proposed modeling method is validated through a series of simulations and experiments. First, the proposed method Is rigorously compared with a commercial finite element code. Then, an experiment is performed to validate the proposed modeling method. Finally, a numerical example is introduced to demonstrate the possible application of the proposed method in the crack diagnosis for rotor systems.

  • Rotordynamic analysis of a multistage turbine pump using finite element method is performed to investigate the effects of seal wear on its system behavior. Stiffness and damping coefficents of the 2-axial grooved bearing are obtained as functions of rotating speed. Stiffness and damping coefficients of plane annuler seals are calculated as functions of rotating speed as well as seal clearance of seals become larger, these stiffness and damping coefficients decrease drastically so that there can be significant changes in whirl natural frequencies and damping characteristics of the pump rotor system. Although a pump is designed to operate with a sufficient seperation margin from the 1st critical speed, seal wear due to long operation may cause a sudden increase in vibration amplitude by resonance shift and reduce seal damping capability.
