  • Tilting pad journal bearings have been widely used in a high speed rotating machinery, such as steam turbines and gas turbines, owing to their inherent stability characteristics. However, some peculiar fatigue failure in the babbitt metal due to spragging has been continuously occurred at the leading edge of the upper pads. The spragging is defined as the pad vibration initiated on the upper unloaded pads in a tilting pad journal bearing. This paper describes both several kinds of bearing failure related with spragging and the theoretical investigation on the prevention of the spragging phenomenon using the variation of preload. Results show that positive preload(m>0.5) assures all pads remain statically loaded under all operating conditions. For the change of design parameter to prevent spragging, thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication and rotor dynamic analysis were performed to verify temperature limitation on bearing and vibration problems on rotor bearing system.

  • This paper proposes a method to calculate the characteristics of a coupled hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearing of a HDD spindle motor. The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in $\theta z$ and $ r\theta$ planes, respectively. Finite element method is appropriately applied to analyze the coupled journal and thrust bearing by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the journal and thrust bearings. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. The static characteristics are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. The flying height of spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the proposed method can describe HDB in a HDD system more accurately and realistically than the separate analysis of a journal or thrust bearing.

  • A lot of researches have been done in order to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the aerostatic porous bearing, most of them used analytical approaches and only a few used experimental approaches. However the experimental condition used in the previous experimental approaches was not realistic, where the porous bearing has been fixed and only the mass supported by the bearing was allowed to move vertically. The dynamic stiffness obtained by those experimental setups may be different with the real case where the mass and the bearing move together in horizontal direction. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the horizontally moving aerostatic circular porous air bearings are investigated by the experimental approach. The experimental apparatus was designed to realize its real operating condition used in most industrial applications. The experimental results were compared with the previous experimental ones.

  • Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Bearings (FREBs) are a relatively new type of laminated bearings that can be used as seismic/vibration isolators or bridge bearings. In an unbonded (U)-FREB, the bearing is placed between the top and bottom supports with no bonding or fastening provided at its contact surfaces. Under shear loads the top and bottom faces of a U-FREB roll off the contact supports and the bearing exhibits rollover deformation. As a result of rollover deformation, the horizontal response characteristics of U-FREBs are significantly different than conventional elastomeric bearings that are employed in bonded application. Current literature lacks an efficient analytical horizontal stiffness solution for this type of bearings. This paper presents two simplified analytical models for horizontal stiffness evaluation of U-FREBs. Both models assume that the resistance to shear loads is only provided by an effective region of the bearing that sustains significant shear strains. The presented models are different in the way they relate this effective region to the horizontal bearing displacements. In comparison with experimental results and finite element analyses, the analytical models that are presented in this paper are found to be sufficiently accurate to be used in the preliminary design of U-FREBs.

  • It is very important to detect the bearing defects in rotating machinery since the critical failure of bearing cause a machinery shutdown. However it is difficult to detect the vibration signal resulting from the initial defects of bearing because of the high level of broadband noise. A signal processing technique, called the adaptive line enhancer(ALE) as one of adaptive filter, is studied in this work. This technique is to eliminate broadband noise without a prior knowledge of the noise and signal characteristics. Also we propose the optimal methods for selecting the three main ALE parameters such as correlation length, filter order and adaptation constant used in the adaptative process. Vibration signals for three abnormal bearings, including inner and outer raceways and ball defects, were acquired from Anderon(angular derivative of radius on)meter. The experimental results showed that the proposed technique can reliably detect the bearing defective signals masked by broadband noise.

  • A faulting could be occurred at the end of deck by unexpected loads to bridge bearing after a bridge completion. Serviceability of bridges could be impaired by the faulting which is caused structural damage. Therefore, smart bridge bearing which can continuously observe the supporting points is needed. Some of bridge bearings have been developed for measuring vertical load and vertical displacement by installing sensors in the bearing. In those systems, however it is not easy to be replaced with new sensors when repairs are needed. In this study, the smart bridge bearing of which sensors can be replaced has been developed to overcome such a problem. In this study, strain signals were used for measuring both of vertical displacements and loads. FBG sensors(fiber optic Bragg-grating sensors) have been used for measurement of the strain signals since it is prevented from electronic noise by mediating light, enables the simplification of the measuring cable by multiple measurement, and is easy to place by lightweight and small size. The possibility of use was reviewed for smart bridge bearing based on FBG sensors through tests.

The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in ${\theta}z$ and $r\theta$ planes, respectively. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. • Because the regulation for a noise and a vibration in our country has been being reinforced more and more, a more environment-friendly pile construction method than a current low-noise and low-vibration method was needed for the close construction in the downtown area. In this study, the characteristics of a screw concrete pile method for noise and vibration-free method was explained, and it's vertical bearing capacity was studied in the base of the static pile load test data of the screw concrete piles. Constructed by two methody; a pre-digging shoe type construction method and a toe-jetting shoe type construction method. The vertical load bearing capacity of a screw pile constructed by the former was more about 70% than that of a screw pile constructed by the latter.

  • In the design of a rotor shaft, care should be taken to minimize vibration by taking into account the sources of vibration. In addition, the intensity critical speed, stability, and other related aspects of the system must be considered. especially when it is operated at a critical speed, it is important to address issues related to vibration, as an increase in the whirling response of the rotor shaft can cause damage to the shaft, destruction of the rotor parts, and detrimental abrasions on the bearings. In this thesis, the vibration characteristics of a rotor shaft are investigated through the use of the finite element method. Variations of the diameters and lengths were used to determine the effect of a rotor shaft using Beam No.188(3D linear strain beam) in ANSYS version 11.0 as a universal interpretation program for finite elements. Special care was taken to prevent excessive vibration, which can result from resonance at the initial stage, in the formulation of a dynamic design for a rotor shaft through calculations while changing the diameters and the lengths of the shaft. Moreover, the dynamic characteristics of the critical speed, total mass, D/L(diameter to length) ratio, and natural frequency were verified. Furthermore, the rotor shaft applied by bearing element was calculated and compared by using Combi No. 214(2-D spring-damper bearing).
