  • The optimal condition for focusing an electron beam was investigated employing an electrostatic deflector in a low voltage micro-column. At fixed voltage of the electron emission tip, the focusing electron beam with source lens showed a larger scan field size and poorer visibility than those with an Einzel lens. Theoretical 3-D simulation indicated that a focusing electron beam with a source lens should have a larger spot size and deflection than those of a focusing Einzel lens.

  • High energy Photon beam has a sharp beam margin due to a less side scatter and the other things. But there still remains a penumbra where the dose changes rapidly in the region near the edge of a radiation beam, although it is short in width. It is suggested that the width of the penumbra depends on the source size, distance from source to diaphragm, source to skin distance, and depth in tissue. However, it is also supposed that the other factors influence the penumbra width. In this paper, we investigate changes of the physical penumbra widths according to various field sizes and depths, by using the three dimensional dosimetry system. As a result, we found that as field size and depth increase, the physical penumbra width also increases.

  • This study was performed on the dose distribution of various field size and the effect of penumbra shield in the telecobalt unit. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Errors of the light and ${\gamma}-ray$ field size was below the regulation as 0.52 percentage. 2. The coefficient of field area was increased with the larger field area, and this coefficient was showed the more difference in larger SSD. 3. The rectangular field areas, which were described by level of the same percentage depth does, were decreased with the more elongation factor. At the same elongation factor, the compensating factor was decreased with the larger field size. 4. The lead block or extension collimator was able to shield r-ray exposure of outside field size from 50 to 80 percentage. 5. On the matching adjacent fields, while the gap between beam edges are contacted, that overlapped beam edges indicated up to 140 percentage, and while the gap was 1 cm, it could be reduced to 90 Percentage. The lead-libocking on the overlapped area was more effective to lower dose, as 80 percentage in this case. 6. Percentage depth dose of various trimming field sizes were increased linearlly according to area 1 perimeter size, but the center split field size did not maintain linearlly.

  • Nanogels are internally cross-linked particles of sub-micrometer size made of hydrophilic polymers and are considered a distinct type of macromolecules, compared with linear and branched polymers or macroscopic gels. In this study, we studied a method of radiation induced synthesis of nanogels, which allows us to obtain tailored intra-molecularly crosslinked macromolecules of independently chosen molecular weight and dimensions. Thus, we report the possibility of applying the prepared nanogels using poly(acrylic acid) through electron beam irradiation for potential application as biomaterials. The nanogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the size and zeta-potential of nanogels were measured by a particle size analyzer (PSA). The nanogels were prepared at an approximate size of 180 nm at 100 kGy and were spherical in shapes. The size of the nanogels decreased with increasing irradiation doses, and the absolute value of zeta potential increased with increasing irradiation doses.

  • The effect of the laser beam diameter on the microstructure and hardness of 17-4 PH stainless steel manufactured via the directed energy deposition process is investigated. The pore size and area fraction are much lower using a laser beam diameter of 1.0 mm compared with those observed using a laser beam diameter of 1.8 mm. Additionally, using a relatively larger beam diameter results in pores in the form of incomplete melting. Martensite and retained austenite are observed under both conditions. A smaller width of the weld track and overlapping area are observed in the sample fabricated with a 1.0 mm beam diameter. This difference appears to be mainly caused by the energy density based on the variation in the beam diameter. The sample prepared with a beam diameter of 1.0 mm had a higher hardness near the substrate than that prepared with a 1.8 mm beam diameter, which may be influenced by the degree of melt mixing between the 17-4 PH metal powder and carbon steel substrate.

  • A study of the natural vibrations of beam resting on elastic foundation with finite number of transverse open cracks is presented. Frequency equations are derived for beams with different end restraints. Euler-Bernoulli beam on Pasternak foundation and Euler-Bernoulli beam on Pasternak foundation are investigated. The cracks are modeled by massless substitute spring. The effects of the crack location, size and its number and the foundation constants, on the natural frequencies of the beam, are investigated.

  • The beam characteristics and dosimetric measurements of the 6MV X-ray and 6MeV electron beam from a ML-6M linear accelerator are examined. The Percent Depth Dose(PDD) table and the tissue Maximum Ratio(TMR) table are taken from measurement as a function of the field size and the depth. The calculated TMR table from PDD table is compared with those from measurement. Other beam characteristics such as output factor, beam profile(including flatness, symmetry and penumbra), wedge, and the variation of Dmax are presented. All of these dosimetric measurements sufficiently characterized the beam to permit safe clinical use.

  • Experimental studies were carried out with test parameters: diaphragm yield type and beam yield type, the opening hole size of inner steel diaphragm, and the existence of slab in order to understand the behavior of beam-to-concrete filled steel tube column rigid connections under cyclic loading condition. Test results show that the connections have good rotational capacity when the beam yields first and the joints should be designed such that the beam yields prior to the inner diaphragms.

  • The quadratic B-spline finite element method yields mass and stiffness matrices which are half the size of matrices obtained by the conventional finite element method. We solve the free vibration problem of a rotating Rayleigh beam using the quadratic B-spline finite element method. Rayleigh beam theory includes the rotary inertia effects in addition to the Euler-Bernoulli theory assumptions and presents a good mathematical model for rotating beams. Galerkin's approach is used to obtain the weak form which yields a system of symmetric matrices. Results obtained for the natural frequencies at different rotating speeds show an accurate match with the published results. A comparison with Euler-Bernoulli beam is done to decipher the variations in higher modes of the Rayleigh beam due to the slenderness ratio. The results are obtained for different values of non-uniform parameter ($\bar{n}$).
