The filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS), which is adopted by magnetic filtering methode to remove the macro-particle in vacuum arc plasma, was composed of a torus structure with bending angle of 60 degree. The radius of torus was 266 mm, the radius of plasma duct was 80 mm and the total length was 600 mm. The magnet parts were consisted of one permanent magnet, one magnetic yoke and five solenoid magnets. The plasma duct was electrically isolated from the ground so that a bias voltage could be applied. The baffles inside plasma duct were installed in order to prevent the recoil effect of macro-particles. Graphite was used as the cathode material to coat the amorphic diamond film and its diameter was 80 mm. The amorphic diamond film attracts much attention due to its excellent mechanical, optical and tribological properties suitable for wide range of applications. The effects of solenoid magnet in plasma extraction were studied by computer simulation and experiment using Taguchi's method. The source and extraction magnet affected the arc stabilization. The extraction beam current was maximized with low value of the source magnet current and high value of the filtering magnet current. Optimum deposition condition was obtained when the currents of arc discharge, source, extraction, bending, deflection and outlet magnet were 30 A, 1 A, 3 A, 5 A, and 5 A, respectively.

The multibeam surveillance radar is a state-of art of 3D radar technology. It applies the stacked beam-on-received realized by a digital beamformer. In this paper, a design concept of beamformer and a method of target altitude extraction for multibeam surveillance radar in the normal environmental condition considering no multipath situations are proposed and investigated. The extraction algorithm based on antenna sine space coordinated system in a FFT digital beamformer is described. The proposed algorithm is simulated by 1 look-up table data and confirmed to have consistent results in accordance with a variety of target altitudes and a full radar frequency range.
Purpose: To investigate the healing pattern of the mucous membrane after tooth extraction necessitated by periodontal disease in the maxillary sinus. Methods: One hundred and three patients with 119 maxillary sinuses were investigated. Before implant placement, cone-beam computed tomography (CT) scanning was performed. The causes of extraction, the time elapsed since extraction, smoking, periodontal disease in adjacent teeth, and gender were recorded. In addition, the thickness of the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus and the height of residual alveolar bone at the extracted area were calculated from CT images. Results: The thickness of the mucous membrane in the periodontal disease group ($3.05{\pm}2.71\;mm$) was greater than that of the pulp disease group ($1.92{\pm}1.78\;mm$) and the tooth fracture group ($1.35{\pm}0.55\;mm$; P<0.05). The causes of extraction, the time elapsed since extraction, and gender had relationships with a thickening of the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus (P<0.05). In contrast, the height of the residual alveolar bone at the extracted area, periodontal disease in adjacent teeth, and smoking did not show any relation to the thickening of the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus. Conclusions: The present study revealed distinct differences in healing patterns according to the causes of extraction in the maxillary sinus, especially periodontal disease, which resulted in more severe thickening of the mucous membrane.
Food irradiation is one of the successful modern techniques used to preserve food. However, it needs very careful control. Detection of irradiated food is of prime importance to facilitate global trade and consumer assurance, choice, and protection. This study was performed to evaluate the radiation-induced hydrocarbon content of dried squid and octopus by e-beam irradiation. The samples were collected from supermarkets all over South Korea and irradiated with an e-beam at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 kGy doses. Lipids were extracted with soxhelt, and the hydrocarbons induced with irradiation were separated via solid phase extraction (SPE) and identified via gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The major induced hydrocarbons in the irradiated dried squid and octopus were 1-tetradecene and pentadecane derived from palmitic acid and 1-hexadecene and heptadecane from stearic acid. The concentration of hydrocarbons differed from the composition of the fatty acid at the same radiation and increased according to the level of the radiation dose. The hydrocarbons induced by e-beam irradiation, including 1-tetradecene, 1-hexadecene, and heptadecane, were confirmed to have been the irradiation marker compounds. Therefore, they can be used to distinguish the e-beam-irradiated dried squid and octopus from the non-irradiated ones.
Modal parameters of a structure are commonly used quantities for system identification and damage detection. With a limited number of studies on the statistics assessment of modal parameters, this paper presents procedures to properly account for the uncertainties present in the process of extracting modal parameters. Particularly, this paper focuses on how to deal with the measurement error in an ambient vibration test and the modeling error resulting from a modal parameter extraction process. A bootstrap approach is adopted, when an ensemble of a limited number of noised time-history response recordings is available. To estimate the modeling error associated with the extraction process, a model prediction expansion approach is adopted where the modeling error is considered as an "adjustment" to the prediction obtained from the extraction process. The proposed procedures can be further incorporated into the probabilistic analysis of applications where the modal parameters are used. This study considers the effects of the measurement and modeling errors and can provide guidance in allocating resources to improve the estimation accuracy of the modal data. As an illustration, the proposed procedures are applied to extract the modal data of a damaged beam, and the extracted modal data are used to detect potential damage locations using a damage detection method. It is shown that the variability in the modal parameters can be considered to be quite low due to the measurement and modeling errors; however, this low variability has a significant impact on the damage detection results for the studied beam.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of silica-calcium phosphate composite (SCPC) granules on bone regeneration in extraction sockets. Methods: Ten patients were selected for a split-model study. In each patient, bone healing in SCPC-grafted and control ungrafted sockets was analyzed through clinical, radiographic, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical assessments 6 months postoperatively. Results: A radiographic assessment using cone-beam computed tomography showed minimal ridge dimension changes in SCPC-grafted sockets, with 0.39 mm and 1.79 mm decreases in height and width, respectively. Core bone biopsy samples were obtained 6 months post-extraction during implant placement and analyzed. The average percent areas occupied by mature bone, woven bone, and remnant particles in the SCPC-grafted sockets were 41.3%±12%, 20.1%±9.5%, and 5.3%±4.4%, respectively. The percent areas of mature bone and woven bone formed in the control ungrafted sockets at the same time point were 31%±14% and 24.1%±9.4%, respectively. Histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses showed dense mineralized bundles of type I collagen with high osteopontin expression intensity in the grafted sockets. The newly formed bone was well vascularized, with numerous active osteoblasts, Haversian systems, and osteocytes indicating maturation. In contrast, the new bone in the control ungrafted sockets was immature, rich in type III collagen, and had a low osteocyte density. Conclusions: The resorption of SCPC granules in 6 months was coordinated with better new bone formation than was observed in untreated sockets. SCPC is a resorbable bone graft material that enhances bone formation and maturation through its stimulatory effect on bone cell function.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the use of 3-dimensional (3D) laser scanning and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as methods of root surface measurement. Materials and Methods: Thirty teeth (15 maxillary first premolars and 15 mandibular first premolars) from 8 patients who required extractions for orthodontic treatment were selected. Before extraction, pre-treatment CBCT images of all the patients were recorded. First, a CBCT image was imported into simulation software (Mimics version 15.01; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) and the root surface area of each tooth was calculated using 3-Matic (version 7.01, Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). After extraction, all the teeth were scanned and the root surface area of each extracted tooth was calculated. The root surface areas calculated using these 2 measurement methods were analyzed using the paired t-test (P<.05). Correlations between the 2 methods were determined by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient. The intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) was used to assess intraobserver reliability. Results: The root surface area measurements ($230.11{\pm}41.97mm^2$) obtained using CBCT were slightly greater than those ($229.31{\pm}42.46mm^2$) obtained using 3D laser scanning, but not significantly (P=.425). A high Pearson correlation coefficient was found between the CBCT and the 3D laser scanner measurements. The intraobserver ICC was 1.000 for 3D laser scanning and 0.990 for CBCT. Conclusion: This study presents a novel CBCT approach for measuring the root surface area; this technique can be used for estimating the root surface area of non-extracted teeth.
Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) is a composite material where small fibers made from steel or polypropylene or similar material are embedded into concrete matrix. In a material model each constituent should be adequately described, especially the interface between the matrix and fibers that is determined with the 'bond-slip' law. 'Bond-slip' law describes relation between the force in a fiber and its displacement. Bond-slip relation is usually obtained from tension laboratory experiments where a fiber is pulled out from a matrix (concrete) block. However, theoretically bond-slip relation could be determined from bending experiments since in bending the fibers in FRC get pulled-out from the concrete matrix. We have performed specially designed laboratory experiments of three-point beam bending with an intention of using experimental data for determination of material parameters. In addition, we have formulated simple layered model for description of the behavior of beams in the three-point bending test. It is not possible to use this 'forward' beam model for extraction of material parameters so an inverse model has been devised. This model is a basis for formulation of an inverse model that could be used for parameter extraction from laboratory tests. The key assumption in the developed inverse solution procedure is that some values in the formulation are known and comprised in the experimental data. The procedure includes measured data and its derivative, the formulation is nonlinear and solution is obtained from an iterative procedure. The proposed method is numerically validated in the example at the end of the paper and it is demonstrated that material parameters could be successfully recovered from measured data.
We study the amplification properties of an optical amplifier based on a cesium-vapor cell. An optical amplification system including cesium vapor mixed with a buffer gas is built, and its amplification feature is investigated as a function of the size of the incident beam and the temperature of the cesium-vapor cell. We observe that the optical amplification properties, such as amplification factor and extraction efficiency, change significantly depending on the temperature and beam diameter of the pump and seed light. A maximum extraction efficiency of 56% is obtained when the temperature of the cesium cell is 90 ℃, with a 200-㎛ diameter of the pump (500 mW) and seed light (10 mW). The numerical simulation of the amplification properties agrees reasonably with the results obtained from the experiment.

The structural behaviour of concrete beam was examined by the three points bending test after the completion of the electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), rather than bond strength mostly measured in previous studies. It was found that the flexural rigidity of concrete was lowered by the ECE, but the strength was enhanced in terms of the maximum load. The flexural rigidity, in the linear elastic range, was reduced by the loss of effective cross-section area. In fact, the inertia moment was substantially subjected to 70 % loss of the cross-section by the tensile strain at the condition of the failure. However, a lower rate of the inertia moment reduction was achieved by the ECE, implying the higher resistance to the cracking, but the higher risk of deformation.
