For offshore structures, dynamic analysis becomes increasingly important as water depth increases and structural configuration becomes more slender. In the case of dynamic analysis of frame structures, much computer time and high cost are required due to many degrees of freedom, In this paper, a new technique of permutating a segment of frame structure to a beam is developed, which is called here Beam Permutation Technique. The technique is based on definition of stiffness matrix of the beam which is obtained by defining the actions(or forces) required to obtain unit translation or rotation for each degree of freedom wiht al other degree of freedom restrained to zero displacement or rotation. In the technique, an assumption is made that relative positions of nodes in the ends of the segment are not variable, The technique can significantly reduce the degrees of freedom of frame structures and thus the computiong time in dynamic analysis. The natural frequencies and static displacements of the permutated beam are obtained and compared to those of ANSYS with a good agreement.

In this article, the values of internal force and deformation of a curved beam under any action with the firm or elastic supports are determined by using structural matrices. The article presents the general differential formulation of a curved beam in global coordinates, which is solved in an orderly manner using simple integrals, thus obtaining the transfer matrix expression. The matrix expression of rigidity is obtained through reordering operations on the transfer notation. The support conditions, firm or elastic, provide twelve equations. The objective of this article is the construction of the algebraic system of order twenty-four, twelve transfer equations and twelve support equations, which relates the values of internal force and deformation associated with the two ends of the directrix of the curved beam. This final algebraic system, expressed in matrix form, is divided into two subsystems: twelve algebraic equations of internal force and twelve algebraic equations of deformation. The internal force and deformation values for any point in the curved beam directrix are determined from these values in the initial position. The five examples presented show how to apply the matrix procedures developed in this article, whether they are curved beams with the firm or elastic support.
Decks, interior beams, edge beams and girders are the parts of a steel floor system. If the deck is optimized without considering beam optimization, finding best result is simple. However, a deck with higher cost may increase the composite action of the beams and decrease the beam cost reducing the total cost. Also different number of floor divisions can improve the total floor cost. Increasing beam capacity by using castellated beams is other efficient method to save the costs. In this study, floor optimization is performed and these three issues are discussed. Floor division number and deck sections are some of the variables. Also for each beam, profile section of the beam, beam cutting depth, cutting angle, spacing between holes and number of filled holes at the ends of castellated beams are other variables. Constraints include the application of stress, stability, deflection and vibration limitations according to the load and resistance factor (LRFD) design. Objective function is the total cost of the floor consisting of the steel profile cost, cutting and welding cost, concrete cost, steel deck cost, shear stud cost and construction costs. Optimization is performed by enhanced colliding body optimization (ECBO), Results show that using castellated beams, selecting a deck with higher price and considering different number of floor divisions can decrease the total cost of the floor.
Due to functional requirements, SRC column-RC beam abnormal joints with characteristics of strong beam weak column, variable column section, unequal beam height and staggered height exist in the Steel reinforced concrete (SRC) frame-bent main building structure of thermal power plant (TPP). This paper presents the experimental results of these abnormal joints through cyclic loading tests on five specimens with scaling factor of 1/5. The staggered height and whether adding H-shaped steel in beam or not were changing parameters of specimens. The failure patterns, bearing capacity, energy dissipation and ductile performance were analyzed. In addition, the stress mechanism of the abnormal joint was discussed based on the diagonal strut model. The research results showed that the abnormal exterior joints occurred shear failure and column end hinge flexural failure; reducing beam height through adding H-shaped steel in the beam of abnormal exterior joint could improve the crack resistance and ductility; the abnormal interior joints with different staggered heights occurred column ends flexural failure; the joint with larger staggered height had the higher bearing capacity and stiffness, but lower ductility. The concrete compression strut mechanism is still applicable to the abnormal joints in TPP, but it is affected by the abnormal characteristics.
The main objective of this paper is to analyze the rectangular stiffened plates with two opposite ends elastically restrained and the others simply supported subjected to in-plane bending by Finite Element Method. Another objective is to develope Classical Method analyzing the unstiffened rectangular plates with the above boundary conditions. In order to validate finite element and classical methods, the buckling strengths of the rectangular plates with four simply supported ends, and with two simply supported and the others fixed ends by finite element method and classical method are compared with those of references. In finite element method, elastically restrained ends can be obtained as considering torsional and warping rigidities of end stiffeners. The buckling strengths of the rectangular plates with elastically restrained ends by finite element and classical methods are calculated and compared with each other. In case of stiffened plates, to validate finite element method, the buckling strengths of the rectangular stiffened plates with four simply supported ends, and with two simply supported and the others fixed ends are also compared with those of references. The buckling strengths of the rectangular stiffened plates with elastically restrained ends by finite element method are calculated as solving eigenvalue problems which are obtained as assembling rectangular plate elements and beam elements considered torsional and warping rigidities. The buckling strengths of rectangular stiffened plates according to various positions of rectangular intermediate stiffener, J and I/sub w/ of end stiffeners are also obtained, which are compared to determine the efficient position of intermediate stiffener.
The effectiveness of using a composite beam with constrained visco-elastic layer as a dynamic vibration absorber is investigated. The performance of this absorber is evaluated in terms of displacement transmissibility when to a primary beam with built-in ends and compared to that of the uniform beam absorber. The results of analysis and design show that it is possible to suppress simultaneoulsy the peak transmissibilities at two or more resonance frequencies and the optimal parameters are located within the available viscoelastic material properties.

In this paper, dynamic stability and vibration characteristics of a flexible shoe in drum brake systems are investigated. The frictional force between the drum and the shoe is assumed as a distributed frictional force, while the shoe is modeled as an elastic beam supported by two translational springs at both ends and elastic foundations. Governing equations of motion are derived by energy expressions, and numerical results are calculated by finite element method. Through the numerical simulation, critical distributed frictional forces are calculated by changing the stiffness of two translational springs and elastic foundation parameters. It is also shown that the beam loses its stability by flutter and divergence depending on the stiffness of elastic supports and elastic foundation parameters. Finally, the time responses of the beam corresponding to their instability types are demonstrated.
This paper is intended to investigate interaction response of a train running over a suspension bridge undergoing support settlements. The suspension bridge is modeled as a single-span suspended beam with hinged ends and the train as successive moving oscillators with identical properties. To conduct this dynamic problem with non-homogeneous boundary conditions, this study first divides the total response of the suspended beam into two parts: the static and dynamic responses. Then, the coupled equations of motion for the suspended beam carrying multiple moving oscillators are transformed into a set of nonlinearly coupled generalized equations by Galerkin's method, and solved using the Newmark method with an incremental-iterative procedure including the three phases: predictor, corrector, and equilibrium-checking. Numerical investigations demonstrate that the present iterative technique is available in dealing with the dynamic interaction problem of vehicle/bridge coupling system and that the differential movements of bridge supports will significantly affect the dynamic response of the running vehicles but insignificant influence on the bridge response.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with translational and rotational springs and tip masses at the ends. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the translational spring parameter, the rotational spring parameter, the mass ratio and the dimensionless mass moment of inertia.
This paper deals with large deformation post-buckling of a linear-elastic and hygrothermal beam with axially nonmovable pinned-pinned ends and subjected to a significant increase in swelling by an alternative method. Analytical approximate solutions for the geometrically nonlinear problem are presented. The solution for the limiting case of a string is also obtained. By coupling of the well-known Maclaurin series expansion and orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials, the governing differential equation with sinusoidal nonlinearity can be reduced to form a cubic-nonlinear equation, and supplementary condition with cosinoidal nonlinearity can also be simplified to be a polynomial integral equation. Analytical approximations to the resulting boundary condition problem are established by combining the Newton's method with the method of harmonic balance. Two approximate formulae for load along axis, potential strain for free hygrothermal expansion and periodic solution are established for small as well as large angle of rotation at the end of the beam. Illustrative examples are selected and compared to "reference" solution obtained by the shooting method to substantiate the accuracy and correctness of the approximate analytical approach.
