  • This paper presents a finite element based numerical model to solve two dimensional bi-material problems. A bi-material beam consisting of two phase materials ceramic and metal is modelled by finite element method. The beam is subjected simultaneously to mechanical and thermal loadings. The main objective of this study is the analysis of crack deviation located in the brittle material near the interface. The effect of temperature gradient, the residual stresses and applied loads on crack initiation, propagation and deviation are examined and highlighted.

  • In this paper, an analytical laser ablation model with Maxwell equation will be addressed by considering relationship between laser ablation and material. The Maxwell equation consists of four equations: two Gauss laws for electric and magnetic fields, Faraday's law, and Ampere's law. This analytical model will be calculated by employing Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD). This method also makes it possible to simulate the laser beam propagation in a wide range of materials, such as metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics. Therefore, in this study, a numerical model for short pulse laser interaction with materials is developed, focusing on the accurate description of laser beam propagation and ablation process into the material with each pulse.

  • Bending losses of bent optical waveguides are calculated by virtue of the finite difference-beam p propagation method in the cylindrical coordinate system. In order to minimize the radiating losses of bent optical waveguides, we apply the trench structure to the bent waveguides and perform the a analysis to keep track of: 1) the influence of curvature radius on the bending loss without the trench, 2) the influence of curvature radius and refractive index difference on the bending loss with the trench, 3) the influence of the trench width on the bending loss.

  • Putting emphasis on the effect of existence of porosity in the functionally graded materials (FGMs) on the dynamic responses of waves scattered in FG nanobeams resulted in implementation of a novel porosity-based homogenization method for FGMs and show its applicability in a wave propagation problem in the presence of axial pre-load for the first time. In the employed porosity-dependent method, the coupling between density and Young's moduli is included to consider for the effective moduli of the FG nanobeam by the means of a more reliable homogenization technique. The beam-type element will be modeled via the classical theory of beams, namely Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Also, the dynamic form of the principle of virtual work will be extended for such nanobeams to derive the motion equations. Applying the nonlocal constitutive equations of Eringen on the obtained motion equations will be resulted in derivation of the nanobeam's governing equations. Depicted results reveal that the dispersion responses of FG nanobeams will be decreased as the porosity volume fraction is increased which must be noticed by the designers of advanced nanosize devices who are interested in employment of wave dispersion approach in continuous systems for specific goals.

  • A directional coupler device, one of the fundamental components of photonic integrated circuits, distributes optical power by evanescent field coupling between two adjacent optical waveguides. In this paper, the design process for manufacturing a directional coupler device is reviewed, and the accuracy of the design results, as seen from the characteristics of the actual fabricated device, is confirmed. When designing a directional coupler device through a two-dimensional (2D) beam-propagation-method (BPM) simulation, an optical structure is converted to a two-dimensional planar structure through the effective index method. After fabricating the directional coupler device array, the characteristics are measured. To supplement the 2D-BPM results that are different from the experimental results, a 3D-BPM simulation is performed. Although 3D-BPM simulation requires more computational resources, the simulation result is closer to the experimental results. Furthermore, the waveguide core refractive index used in 3D-BPM is adjusted to produce a simulation result consistent with the experimental results. The proposed design procedure enables accurate design of directional coupler devices, predicting the experimental results based on 3D-BPM.

  • Visco-elastic damping material for reducing heavy-weight floor impact noise and vibration in reinforced concrete structures was tested according to its thickness in the damping layer. The effect of damping material was compared with 20, 15, 10 and 5mm thickness. The wave propagation characteristics was measured for suggestion of an efficient method to reduce the floor impact noise. The method was proposed using the flexural wave propagation characteristics. The result showed that reduction of the thickness of damping layer made a slight difference; the natural frequency moved to higher frequency and the amplitude increased at low frequencies with 5mm thickness of damping material.

  • A compact beam combiner based on two-mode interference (TMI) in multimode waveguides is proposed, and its feasibility is shown through simulation with the three-dimensional beam propagation method. The input waveguides are separated by about 1 ㎛ at the interface with the multimode waveguide, so that the fabricated waveguide pattern is well repeated. The power transmission to the output port from the red, green, and blue input port is 93.5%, 94%, and 93%, respectively. When the wavelength deviation from a center wavelength is 10 nm, the power transmission is maintained to be greater than 90%. When the waveguide width error is 40 nm, the power transmission is maintained to be greater than 85% for all the three colors. The polarization dependence of the beam combiner is almost negligible, and its size is as tiny as 0.02 × 4 ㎟.

  • Organic single crystal of p-toluene sulfonate(PTS) bulks and thin films were fabricated using a slow solution evaporation method. Third and fifth order nonlinear refractive indices, $n_2$and $n_3$, of PTS crystals at 1600 nm were determined by the Z-scan method and the multimode output of the PTS thin film waveguide was observed at 1350 nm. When the beam intensity is in 2-5 GW/$cm^2$, the nonlinear refractive indices are $n_{2}=6{\times}10^{-4}cm^{2}$/GW and $n_{3}=-7{\times}10^{-5}cm^{4}/GW^{2}$ and the two and three photon absorption coefficients are zero. When the beam intensity is in 5~16 GW/$cm^2$, the split-step fast Fourier transform beam propagation method simulation shows that the beam propagation in the PTS is distorted from the gaussian shape.

  • In estimating the freguency-dependent attenuation coefficient, we analyzed the range-dependent ultrasonic beam and proposed the method of calculating the experimental equation of beam pattern in order to reduce the error on the influence of beam pattern. These experimental equations are divided into the spectral centroid and the spec ural standard deviation slope according to axial propagation length. These are repnesented by the first-order equation in the near field of the beam and the second- order eqLlatlon In the far field. In order to prove the validity of this method, the attenuation coefficients of the non-corrected ease and the corrected case are compared. Using the reflected signal from acryle plate, the attenuation coefficients were estimated by the spectral shift method ann the spectral difference method. The result shows attenuation coeffi talents after correction are better than attenuation coefficients before correction. And this method can be applied In vivo measurement.
