  • In this paper elastic-plastic large deflection analysis of ship structural members, plates, stiffened plates and cylindrical shallow shell, are performed by the finite element method. And for the consideration of the yielded propagation through the depth of the member, the layered element approach is employed. The present method is justified by comparing its results with those of experiment and others. As results, the nonlinear behavior and the ultimate strength curves are shown, which can be used in the design of the plates and the stiffened plates under compression, and the applicability to the shell structures is suggested. The analysis results are as followings. (1) The results of the approximate equations as well as those of buckling analysis may not guarantee precisely the safety of the structures in some cases and the optimum in other cases. Therefore they may not show the design criteria for the optimal design. (2) As the initial deflection increases, its effects on the ultimate strength of the structure generally increases, and the ultimate load, therefore, decreases. (3) This approach can be applied to the shell type structures. (4) The present method can be applied to the various structures composed of plate and beam members, for example, plates with hole and the stiffened plates with hole stiffened by spigot, doubler and/or stiffener, for the optimal design.

  • The multibeam surveillance radar is a state-of-art of 3D radar technology. It applies the stacked beam-on-received realized by a digital beamformer. In this paper, a method of a low target altitude extraction for multibeam surveillance radar in multipath environmental condition is proposed and investigated. The model of multipath propagation and radar generation produced from the low altitude target in multibeam surveillance radar and the nelder-mead simplex multipath reduction(NMSMR) method which enables a reliable low altitude target extraction in specular reflection situations are described. The proposed algorithm is simulated to confirm the effectiveness of proposed algorithm in accordance with a various of target altitudes and radar frequencies.

  • The stress field around the dynamically propagating interface crack tip under a remote mixed mode loading condition has been studied with the aid of dynamic photoelastic method. The variation of stress field around the dynamic interface crack tip is photographed by using the Cranz-Shardin type camera having $10^6$ fps rate. The dynamically propagating crack velocities and the shapes of isochromatic fringe loops are characterized for varying mixed load conditions in double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. The dynamic interface crack tip complex stress intensity factors, $K_1\;and\;K_2$, determined by a hybrid-experimental method are found to increase as the load mixture ratio of y/x (vertical/horizontal) values. Furthermore, it is found that the dynamically propagating interface crack velocities are highly dependent upon the varying mixed mode loading conditions and that the velocities are significantly small compared to those under the mode I impact loading conditions obtained by Shukla (Singh & Shukla, 1996a, b) and Rosakis (Rosakis et al., 1998) in the USA.

  • Near-field properties of light emanated from a subwavelength double slit of finite length in a thin metal film, which is essential for understanding fundamental physical mechanisms for near-field optical beam manipulations and various potential nanophotonic device applications, is investigated by using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. Near-field intensity distribution along the propagation direction of light after passing through the slit has been obtained from the phase relation of transverse electric and magnetic fields and the wave impedance. It is found that the near field of emerged light from the both slits is evanescent, that is consistent with conventional surface plasmon localization near the metal surface. Due to the finite of the slit, the amplitude of this evanescent field does not monotonically approach to than of the infinite slit as the slit length increases, i.e. the near-field of the longer slit along the center line can be weaker than that of the shorter one.

  • In waveguide structures, waves may be partially reflected by local non-uniformities. The effects of local non-uniformities has been previously investigated by means of a combined spectral element and finite element (SE/FE) method at relatively low frequencies. However, since the SE is formulated based on a beam theory, the SE/FE method is not appropriated for analysis at higher frequencies where complex deformation of the waveguide occurs. So it is necessary to extend this approach for high frequencies. For the wave propagation at higher frequencies, a combined spectral super element and finite element (SSE/FE) method is introduced in this paper. As an example of the application of this method, wave reflection and transmission due to a local defect in a rail are simulated at frequencies between 20kHz and 30kHz. Also numerical errors are evaluated by means of the conservation of the incident power.

  • Recently, various simplified simulation techniques such as firite-difference beam propagation method and non-orthogonal coupled-mode theory have proposed to analyze the optical characteristics of tapered directional couplers supported by the coupling of two propagating modes. Although these approaches are often in sufficiently accurate, they do not provide the detailed solutions encountered in the analysis of tapered guiding structures. For this purpose, we introduce and utilize a newly developed modal transmission-line theory to analyze rigorously power transfer of the directional coupler. The numerical result reveals that the propagation constants of even and odd modes converge to a single value as increasing the spacer thickness between two symmetric tapered guides. Furthermore, 97% of the power incident into a guiding channel is transmitted to the other channel at the tapered angle ${\theta}=0.1^{\circ}$, and the efficiency of power transfer decreases dramatically as increasing the angle.

  • The mechanical behavior ot concrete is strongly influenced by various scenarios of crack initiation and crack propagation. Recently. the study of the interface fracture and cracking in interfacial regions is emerged as an important field, in the context of the developement of high performance concrete composites. The crack path criterion for elastically homogeneous materials is not valid when the crack advances at an interface because. in this case, the consideration of the relative magnitudes of the fracture toughnesses between the constituent materials and the interface are involved. In this paper, a numerical method is presented to obtain the values of two interfacial fracture parameters such as the energy release rate and the phase angle at the tip of an existing interface crack. Criteria based on energy release rate concepts are suggested for the prediction of crack growth at the interfaces and an hybrid experimental-numerical study is presented on the two-phase beam composite models containing interface cracks to investigate the cracking scenarios in interfacial regions. In general, good agreement between the experimental results and the prediction from the criteria is obtained.

  • A heuristic method treating a layered ocean bottom in a ray modeling is to use the plane wave reflection coefficient for multiple-layered structure, named an one-layer assumption in this paper. We examine the validity of one-layer assumption in the case of two-layered ocean bottom, and obtain a simple inequality condition depending on the sound speed ratio, the ratio of layer thickness to source-receiver range, and the grazing angle of first reflected ray. From this inequality condition, it is shown that an one-layer assumption can be applicable to ray propagation problems at mid frequencies. Finally, numerical experiments are performed in the ocean environment similar to the East Sea in Korea. Incoherent transmission loss is calculated by the geometrical beam model with the plane wave reflection coefficient for multiple-layered ocean bottom and compared with the result of SNUPE 2.0, which is a parabolic equation package developed in Seoul National University.

  • This paper presents the integrated fluorescent oxygen sensor probe module based on planner lightwave circuits using UV imprint lithography. The oxygen sensor system is consisted of the optical source part, optical detector part and optical sensing probe part to be composed of the planner lightwave circuit and oxygen sensitive thin film layer. Firstly, we optimally designed the planner lightwave circuit with asymmetric $1{\times}2$ beam splitter using beam propagation method. Then, we fabricated the planner lightwave circuits using UV imprint lithography process. This planner lightwave circuits transmitted the optical power with 76% efficiency and the fluorescence signal with 70% efficiency. The oxygen sensitive thin film layer is coated on the end face of planner lightwave circuit. The oxygen sensor system using this sensor probe module with planner lightwave circuit could measure the concentration with 0.3% resolution from 0% to 20% gas range. This optical oxygen sensor probe module make it possible to compact, simple and cheap measurement system.
