  • The influences of the large amplitude free vibrations of simply supported Timoshenko beams with ends restrained to remain a fixed distance apart and with no axial restraints, which cause a longitudinal elastic force and a longitudinal inertia force, respectively, are investigated. The equations of motion derived by an appropriate linearizarion of the nonlinear strain- displacement relation have nonlinear terms arising from large curvature, longitudinal elastic force and longitudinal inertia force. The fourth order nonlinear partial differential equations for the deflection, can be reduced to the nonlinear ordinary differential equations by means of Galerkin procedure and a modal expansion. The general response and frequensy-amplitude relations are derived by the perturbation method of strained parameters. Comparison with previously published results is made.

  • An analytical study is presented on the hydroelastic vibration of two rectangular identical plates coupled with a bounded fluid by using the finite Fourier series expansion method. It is observed that the two contrastive modes, the so called the out-of-phase and in-phase modes. All natural frequency of the in-phase modes can be predicted well by the combination of the beam modes in the air, but the natural frequency of the out-of-phase mode cannot be estimated precisely. • In this paper we investigate a relation between the multiplicity of solutions and source terms in a nonlinear suspension bridge equation in the interval $(-\frac{2}{\pi}, \frac{2}{\pi})$, under Dirichlet boundary condition $$ (0.1) u_{tt} + u_{xxxx} + bu^+ = f(x) in (-\frac{2}{\pi}, \frac{2}{\pi}) \times R, $$ $$ (0.2) u(\pm\frac{2}{\pi}, t) = u_{xx}(\pm\frac{2}{\pi}, t) = 0, $$ $$ (0.3) u is \pi - periodic in t and even in x and t, $$ where the nonlinearity - $(bu^+)$ crosses an eigenvalue $\lambda_{10}$. This equation represents a bending beam supported by cables under a load f. The constant b represents the restoring force if the cables stretch. The nonlinearity $u^+$ models the fact that cables expansion but do not resist compression.

  • This study considered the effect of scour depth on the behaviour of pile foundation of bridge structure under seismic excitation. The numerical model was composed of the superstructure, pile foundation and soil. The superstructure and pile was modeled by beam elements and soil was by spring elements. The pile head and concrete footing was considered as hinge and rigid connected situation, respectively. A toro-gap element was used to model the expansion joint of superstructure. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was carried out on the constructed model. It was acknowledged that the steel pile become to yield after the scour depth reached about 2.0m.

  • A description of the basic principles of moire interferometry leads to the design of a eight-mirror four-beam interferometer for obtaining fringe patterns representing contour-maps of in-Plane displacements. The technique is implemented by the optical system using an environmental chamber for submicro-displacement mesurement. In order to estimate the reliability and applicabili쇼 of the system developed, the measurement of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) for a aluminium block is performed. Consequently, the system is applied to the measurement of thermal deformation of a WB-PBGA package assembly. Temperature dependent analyses of global and local deformations are presented to study the effect of the mismatch of CTE between materials composed of the package assemblies. Bending displacements of the packages and average strains of solder balls are documented. Thermal induced displacements calculated by FEM agree quantitatively with experimental results.

  • An anisotropic beam model is proposed by employing an asymptotic expansion method for thermo-mechanical multiphysics environment. An asymptotic method based on virtual work is introduced first, and then the variables of mechanical displacement and temperature rise are asymptotically expanded by taking advantage of geometrical slenderness of elastic bodies. Subsequently substituting these expansions into the virtual work principle allows us to asymptotically expand the virtual work. This will yield a set of recursive virtual works from which two-dimensional microscopic and one-dimensional macroscopic equations are systematically derived at each order. In this way, homogenized stiffnesses and thermomechanical coupling coefficients are derived. To demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed approach, composite beams are taken as a test-bed example. The results obtained herein are compared to those of three-dimensional finite element analysis.

  • We have investigated properties of a plastic photonic crystal fiber guiding terahertz radiations, THz photonic crystal fiber. The single-mode condition and dispersion of a plastic triangular THz photonic crystal fiber are investigated by using the plane wave expansion method and the beam propagation method. The THz photonic crystal fiber can perform as a single-mode fiber below 2.5 THz when the ratio of diameter (d) and period (${\Lambda}$) of air holes is less than 0.475. The THz photonic crystal fiber with ${\Lambda}=500{\mu}m$ and $d/{\Lambda}=0.4$ shows almost zero flattened dispersion behavior, $-0.03{\pm}0.02 ps/THz{\cdot}cm$, in the THz frequency range from 0.8 to 2.0 THz.

  • A new gas jet Z-pinch EUV light source having double gas jet electrodes has been developed. It has two nozzles and two diffusers. The EUV beam is collected from the side of pinch plasma, generated in between the inner nozzle and corresponding diffuser. A cylindrical shell of He gas curtain produced by the outer nozzle is specially designed for shielding the debris and suppressing the inner gas expansion. We have succeeded in generating EUV energy of 1.22 mJ/sr/2%BW/pulse at 13.5nm. The estimated dimension of EUV source is to be FWHM diameter of 0.07 mm and length of 0.34 mm, and FW 1/e2 diameter of 0.15 mm and length of 1.2 mm.

  • Both conventional and PI3 implanters require dense sources for high productivity rate, and small sheath expansion in PI3 besides. The problem of the creation of large volume uniform plasma in PI3 facilities replaces that of beam forming in accelerators. Some aspects of ion extraction in both cases and Langmuir probe plasma diagnostics with be discussed. Plasma parameters of large volume multicusp dc hot cathode and inductively coupled RF plasma sources obtained with Langmuir probe and ion mass analyzer with be presented. Design features and performances of high current Freeman and ECR ion sources will be described.
