This paper describes a study for the buoy which should be operated by a stand-alone power system. The field of this study is related to a power system operated by two batteries which depends on the load power. The fluctuation of the voltages makes the life cycle of the battery shorten. The control algorithm has been proposed for reducing the voltage pulsation of the battery by operation strategy according to using purpose such as main or sub power supply system. The power system with battery is separated two parts and this has been proved through a simulation and a sea experiment. In order for the experiment to use a wireless monitoring system has been installed in buoy. This paper shows an excellent test result of wireless monitoring system for buoy.
The effects of battery aging limit the rechargeable capacity, State of Health(SoH). It is very important to estimate the SoH in the battery monitoring system(BMS) and many algorithms of measuring the internal resistance of the battery were proposed. A method is used by applying a current source of a specific frequency to the battery and measuring the voltage response. When charging harmonic noise is generated in the voltage response, it results in poor resistance measurement accuracy. In this paper, a robust battery internal resistance measurement algorithm is proposed to eliminate the effect of charging noise by integrating the current source and voltage response signals for a certain period. It showed excellent accuracy and stable measurement results. Applying to the BMS for uninterruptible power supply, the usefulness of the proposed method is verified.
Batteries are being used in ESS, electric vehicles and uninterruptible power backup systems. Lead-acid batteries are the most used batteries for high capacity power back up equipment due to their high reliability and low price advantages. It is very important to estimate the chargeable capacity(SoH), and many algorithms were proposed to estimate the internal resistance of the battery. In this paper, the Battery Monitoring System(BMS) for high capacity uninterruptible power supply for IDC is proposed. A simple algorithm for estimating internal resistance was proposed. An computational block diagram of the proposed signal processing algorithm and BMS system configuration of CPU and analog circuit were shown. The proposed method was proved useful by presenting data examples of application to actual IDC sites.
As a fundamental experimental study for reliability improvement of lithium ion secondary battery, degradation mechanism was investigated by microscopic observation and acoustic emission monitoring. Microstructural observation of the decomposed battery after cycle test revealed mechanical and chemical damages such as interface delamination, microcrack of the electrodes, and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Acoustic emission (AE) signal was detected during charge and discharge of lithium ion battery to investigate relationships among cumulative count, discharge capacity, and microdamages. With increasing number of cycle, discharge capacity was decreased and AE cumulative count was observed to increase. Observed damages were attributed to sources of the detected AE signals.
In this paper a direct cell-to-cell charge balancing circuit which can transfer the charge from any cell to any cell in the battery string is introduced. In the proposed topology the energy in the high voltage cell is transferred to the low voltage cell through the simple operation of a dc-dc converter to get fast equalization. Furthermore, the charge equalization can be performed regardless of the battery module operation whether it is being charged, discharged or relaxed. The monitoring circuit composed of a DSP and a battery monitoring IC is designed to monitor the cell voltage and protect the battery. In order to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed topology, a prototype circuit was designed and applied to 12 Lithium-Ion battery module. It has been verified with the experiments that the charge equalization time of the proposed method was shortest compared with those of other methods.
In this paper a cell-to-cell fast charge balancing circuit for the Lithium-Ion battery module is proposed. In the proposed topology the energy in a high voltage cell is transferred directly to a low voltage cell through the operation of the dc-dc converter. Furthermore, the charge balancing can be performed regardless of the battery operation whether it is being charged, discharged or relaxed. The monitoring circuit composed of a DSP and a battery monitoring IC is designed to monitor the cell voltage and detect the inferior cell thereby protecting the battery module from failure. In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed topology, a prototype circuit was designed and applied to 12 Lithium-Ion battery module. It has been verified with the experiments that the charge equalization time of the proposed method was shorter compared with those of other methods.
Use of the PV(photovoltaic) generation system is increased in such areas as remote mountain places or islands at which electrical energy is not serviced. The stand alone PV system is required the power storage products such as battery, fly wheel and super capacitor. Several lead storage batteries are connected in series to get high voltages. The life of lead storage battery is shortened when over charge or over discharge takes place. So, it is needed to control batteries not to be overcharged or be discharged deeply. Voltage of each battery was ignored in former control methods in which overall voltage was used to control charge or discharge battery. In this study, the charging and discharging voltage variations of sealed lead storage batteries with l2V/l.2A were investigated step by step experiments. The results of the test show that one should consider and specify the state of each battery to prevent overcharge or deep discharge. With the basis of the experiments, we designed a monitoring unit to monitor battery voltages simultaneously using micro-controller. The unit measures voltage of 20 batteries simultaneously and displays data on the color LCD monitor with curved line graph. It also sends data to PC using the RS232C communication port. The designed unit was adapted to stand alone PV system with 1kW capacity and lead storage batteries are connected to the PV generation system. The number of lead storage batteries was 10 in series and 12V/250Ah each. Resistive load with 3kW was used for discharging.
LED is expected as an environmentally friendly next generation light source with its good reliability and long lifetime. In this paper, we propose the PV-Battery Driven LED Security Lighting using the LabVIEW program. The remote monitoring is a program for monitoring the voltage and current that made from PV-Battery Driven LED security lighting in remote area. The main subject of this paper is about making the more useful monitoring program to get and save the data from LED Security Lighting. We develop a prototype of the proposed system.
To control the lead storage batteries it is necessary to consider the characteristics of each battery connected in series. In this study, the charging and discharging characteristics of sealed lead storage batteries 12V/1.2A was investigated one by one through experiments. The results of the experiment shows that one should consider the state of each battery to prevent overcharge or deep discharge. Also, we designed an equipment to measure battery voltages simultaneously using micro-controller. This equipment will be useful for monitoring batteries at PV generation system.

The flooded type battery is used for solar lighting system. Because the characteristic of flooded type battery is the short life time, the maintenance cost is high. So the using floe fed type battery in this system is inappropriate. The valve regulated lead acid batter(VRLA) is the maintenance free and cycle service purpose. This paper presents the development of control system and monitoring system to applied VRLA battery for maintenance free and long life time in system.
