In this research, we report on the development of simulation system for performance verification of BMS(Battery Management System) which is utilized in electric vehicles. In the industrial circles, a manufacturer of BMS typically tests their system with real battery packs. However, it takes a long time to test all functions of BMS. Here, we develop BMU(Battery Managament Unit) as an embedded board, which will be installed in electric vehicle for controlling battery packs. All other environment factors for testing BMU are developed in softwares in order to reduce the term of test. Especially, the proposed system consists of cell simulator and CMU(Cell Management Unit) simulator which simulate real battery cells and control battery cells. These simulators enable the BMU to test more battery cells. In addition, proposed system provides diagnosis program in order to diagnose and monitor the condition of BMS which makes the test of BMS more easily. In order to verify the performance of the developed simulator, we have performed the experiment with real battery packs and our simulator. Through comparing two results of experiments, we verify that developed simulator shows better performance in terms of less amount of testing duration though having high reliability.

Hybrid power systems with fuel cells and batteries have the potential to improve the operation efficiency and dynamic response. A proper load management strategy is important to better system efficiency and endurance in hybrid systems. In this paper, a fuzzy logic algorithm has been used to determine the fuel cell output power depending on the external required power and the battery state of charge(SoC). If the required power of the hybrid system is small and the SoC is small, then the greater part of the fuel cell power is used to charge the battery pack. If the required power is relatively big and the SoC is big, then fuel cell and battery are concurrently used to supply the required power. These IF-THEN operation rules are implemented by fuzzy logic for the energy management system of hybrid system. The strategy is evaluated by simulation. The results show that fuzzy logic can be effectively used to optimize the operational efficiency of hybrid system and to maintain the battery SoC properly.

Currently, various researches on electric vehicle battery systems have been conducted from the viewpoint of safety and performance for SoC, SoH, etc. However, it is difficult to build a precise electrical model of a battery system based on the chemical reaction and SoC prediction. Experimental measurements and predictions of the battery SoC were usually performed using dynamometers. In this paper, we construct a simulation model of an electric vehicle system using Matlab Simulink, and confirm the response characteristics based on the vehicle test driving profiles. In addition, we show that it is possible to derive the correlation between the SoC, voltage, and current of the battery according to the driving time of the electric vehicle in conjunction with the BMS model.
An energy storage system consisting of a battery and a power-to-methanol (PtM) unit was investigated to develop an energy storage system for renewable energy systems. A nonlinear programming model was established to optimize the energy storage system. The optimal installation capacities of the battery and power-to-methanol units were determined to minimize the cost of the energy system. The cost from a renewable energy system was assessed for four configurations, with or without energy storage units, of the battery and the power-to-methanol unit. The proposed model was applied to the modified electricity supply and demand based on published data. The results show that value-adding units, such as PtM, need be included to build a stable renewable energy system. This work will significantly contribute to the advancement of electricity supply and demand management and to the establishment of a nationwide policy for renewable energy storage.

Lithium-ion batteries used for IT, automobiles, and industrial energy-storage devices have battery management systems (BMS) to protect the battery from abnormal voltage, current, and temperature environments, as well as safety devices like, current interruption device (CID), fuse, and vent to obtain positive temperature coefficient (PTC). Nonetheless, there are harmful to human health and property and damage the brand image of the manufacturer because of smoke, fire, and explosion of lithium battery packs. In this paper, we propose a systematic protection algorithm combining battery temperature, over-current, and interconnection between protection elements to prevent copper deposition, internal short circuit, and separator shrinkage due to frequent and instantaneous over-current discharges. The parameters of the proposed algorithm are suggested to utilize the experimental data in consideration of battery pack operating conditions and malicious conditions.

Along with increasing the renewable energy utilization, many researches have paid attention on the utilization and efficiency of energy storage systems. Especially, it is required an operational model in order to actively respond with each system's failure of sub-systems in the solar energy storage system. This paper proposes an energy management scheme by estimating the newly generated power based on the solar power generation samples. With comparing the estimated battery charging power in real time and the total charging power of the battery rack, a charge model is applied to adjust the charging power, As a result, the stability of energy storage system would be improved by suppressing the battery heat while maintaining battery C-Rate.

A battery management system requires accurate information on the battery state of charge (SOC) to achieve efficient energy management of electric vehicle and renewable energy systems. Although correct SOC estimation is difficult because of the changes in the electrical characteristics of the battery attributed to ambient temperature, service life, and operating point, various methods for accurate SOC estimation have been reported. On the basis of piecewise linear (PWL) modeling technique, this paper proposes a simple SOC observer for lithium-polymer batteries. For performance evaluation, the SOC estimated by the PWL SOC observer, the SOC measured by the battery-discharging experiment and the SOC estimated by the extended Kalman filter (EKF) estimator were compared through a PSIM simulation study.

Rapid population growth with high living standards and high electronics use for personal comfort has raised the electricity demand exponentially. To fulfill this elevated demand, conventional energy sources are shifting towards low production cost and long term usable alternative energy sources. Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) are becoming popular as stand-alone power systems for providing electricity in remote areas due to advancement in renewable energy technologies and subsequent rise in prices of petroleum products. Wind and solar power are considered feasible replacement to fossil fuels as the prediction of the fuel shortage in the near future, forced all operators involved in energy production to explore this new and clean source of power. Presented paper proposes fuzzy logic based Energy Management System (EMS) for Wind Turbine (WT), Photo Voltaic (PV) and Diesel Generator (DG) hybrid micro-grid configuration. Battery backup system is introduced for worst environmental conditions or high load demands. Dump load along with dump load controller is implemented for over voltage and over speed protection. Fuzzy logic based supervisory control system performs the power flow control between different scenarios such as battery charging, battery backup, dump load activation and DG backup in most intellectual way.

Purpose: This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for the spot welding process that mechanically connects the case of a cylindrical secondary battery and the negative tab. Methods: We use 33 factorial design to derive the optimal conditions for the spot welding process. The pulling strength, the cross-sectional area of nugget, and the shock test life are selected as response variables, which can represent the resistance welding quality. The input variables are selected as the welding time, welding voltage, and pressure, which are the controllable factors in the spot welding process. Results: The main effects of welding time and welding voltage and the interaction effect of welding time and welding voltage are significant. Conclusion: The optimal conditions for the spot welding process to mechanically join the negative electrode tab of the cylindrical secondary battery and the battery case are developed. The result shows that the pulling strength is increased by 44% compared to before improvement under optimal conditions.
Some defective cells in the battery bank of power systems using batteries result in deterioration of the performance of the total battery bank. Consequently, the battery bank can't perfectly back up the system in occurrence of any power problems and the overcharge of defective cells may lead to their explosion or the occurrence of fire. The developed battery management system in this study enables operators to telemeter and analyze internal resistance, voltages, currents, and temperatures of batteries at remote sites through a PC, so they can detect defective cells before the occurrence of power problems. And adoption of this system ensures extension of battery life.
