A design of LED pannel control ASCI (LED 전광판 제어 ASIC 의 설계)

  • The wide spread of multimedia system demands a large viewin gdesply device which can inform a message to many peoples in open area. This paper is about the design, simulating and testing of a large viewing LED pannel control ASIC(application specific integrated circuit). This LED pannel control ASIC runs on 16 bit microprocessor MC68EC000 and has following functions:16 line interlaced LED pannel controller, memory controller, 16 channel priority inerrupt controller, 2 channel direct memory access controller, 2 channel 12 bit clock and timer, 2 channel infrared remocon receiver, 2 channel RS-232C with 16byte FIFO, IBM PC/AT compatible keyboard interface, battery backuped real time clock, ISA bus controller, battery backuped 256 byte SRAM and watech dog timer. The 0.6micron CMOS sea of gate is used to design the ASIC in amount of about 39,000 gates.

  • Over the last decade or so, there has been an increase in activity devoted to the development of renewable resources for generating electric energy. Many of these generators are small and can only be economically connected to the distribution system or to ths subtransmission system. Those which involve storage, a secondary source of energy, can provide a means to achieve more efficient use of existing generating plant. Such systems are known collectively as Dispersed Storage and Generation devices, or DSGs. So, in this paper various operation patterns for Battery Energy Storgy System which is considered as one of DSG, are examined.

  • The fast charging photoflash capacitor charger with wide range current limiter is presented. By using proposed control logic block and wide range current limiter, the photoflash capacitor charger can reduce charging time and control life of battery for user convenience. The proposed photoflash capacitor charger has 3s charging time at 3.3V battery voltage, 1.2A current limit condition. It is well-suited for portable device application like digital camera, digital video camera, and mobile phone with camera.

  • To improve the drawback of LCMPPT(Limit Cycle Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller of the existing two power conversion stages, an advanced MPPT scheme of single power conversion stage is proposed in this paper. This topology is faster on the control speed by means of current control method and the system configuration is simpler. The Authors produce a battery charger by using a cost effective one-chip processor (PIC16F877A) and evaluate another application on the basis of simulation. As a result, the proposed new LCMPPT algorithm is confirmed to be stable and useful.

Charging and Discharging Characteristics of Electric Double Layer Capacitors used for a Storage Battery of Solar Energy

  • The charging/discharging characteristics of electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) for an electric power storage device application were investigated. The specific area of the carbonaceous electrode surface by the BET method was in the range of $1800{\sim}2000\;m^2/g$. The charge distributions during charging and discharging were measured by means of a pulsed-electro-acoustic (PEA) method, and the voltage characteristics of EDLCs connected to solar cells were evaluated. The results showed that the distributions of positive and negative charges were spatially uneven, which was due to the mobility of the positive and negative charges in the carbonaceous electrode surface of the EDLCs. The charge accumulation region concentrated on central part of the carbonaceous electrode and the required times for charging and discharging were almost same.

  • All-vanadium redox flow battery(VRFB) has been studied actively as one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage systems for a wide range of applications such as electric vehicles, photovoltaic arrays, and excess power generated by electric power plants at night time. CPCS has been shown to have the characteristics as an excellent current collector for VRFB and electrochemical properties of specific resistivity 0.31 $\Omega$cm, which were composed of G-1028 80 wt%, PVC 10 wt%, DBP 5 wt% and FS 5 wt%. Energy efficiencies of VRFB with the CPCE and the existing electrode assembly were 84.14 % and 77.24 % respectively, in charge/discharge experiments at constant current of 200 mA, and the CPCE was confirmed to be suitable as the electrode of VRFB.

  • The load of electric railroad can generate voltage fluctuation in the electric railway system because of high speed of the electric railroad and frequent movement and stop. This voltage fluctuation of electric railway system can cause not only voltage imbalance but also harmonic in the utility grid. Therefore the electric railroad system is in need of the reactive power compensation, such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static var compensator (SVC). Especially, the battery energy storage system (BESS) can control the real and reactive power at the same time. In this paper, the electric railway system using BESS has been modeled to show its voltage compensation effect using Matlab/Simulink.

  • In this paper, we developed a smart black box that can monitor and record the information of the sensor from subsystem in the smart grid system. The plant is the complex power system which is integrated by solar power system, grid-connected power systems, and BESS(battery energy storage system). The black box with the web-server application can connect and synchronize to an external monitoring system and a smart phone. We hope that this system is to contribute to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and stability for the smart grid power system.

  • The development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs) with high energy efficiencies and high power densities is gaining momentum because their performance characteristics are attractive for terrestrial(power sources for electrical vehicles, stand-by power), space and underwater application[1]. Fuel cells are capable of running on non-petroleum fuels such as methanol, natural gas or hydrogen and also have major impact on improving air quality. They virtually eliminate particulates, NO$_{x}$, SO$_{x}$, and significant reduce hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Especially, fuel cell-battery hybrid power sources appear to be well suited to overcome both the so-called battery problem(low energy density) and the fuel cell problem(low power density)[2].[2].

  • As the development of BESS(Battery Energy Storage System), the application of BESS in load frequency control is considered as effective method. So, KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) have installed about 236MW ESS for GF(Govner Free) function from 2014. In this paper, we implemented Simulink Model for KEPCO GF ESS and analyzed one year historical operation data generated by Simulink model and actually measured frequency data. The operation results were divided into action for maintaining SOC and frequency. In addition, we also analyzed cycle life of GF ESS using two ESS cycle life model. We concluded the ESS cycle life models are not appropriate, because Most of the SOC swing in operation results are below 10%.
