Urban flood management is a crucial and challenging task, particularly in developed cities. Therefore, accurate prediction of urban flooding under heavy precipitation is critically important to address such a challenge. In recent years, machine learning techniques have received considerable attention for their strong learning ability and suitability for modeling complex and nonlinear hydrological processes. Moreover, a survey of the published literature finds that hybrid computational intelligent methods using nature-inspired algorithms have been increasingly employed to predict or simulate the streamflow with high reliability. The present study is aimed to propose a novel approach, an ensemble tree, Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) model incorporating a nature-inspired algorithm to predict hourly multi-step ahead streamflow. For this reason, a hybrid intelligent model was developed, namely GA-BART, containing BART model integrating with Genetic algorithm (GA). The Jungrang urban basin located in Seoul, South Korea, was selected as a case study for the purpose. A database was established based on 39 heavy rainfall events during 2003 and 2020 that collected from the rain gauges and monitoring stations system in the basin. For the goal of this study, the different step ahead models will be developed based in the methods, including 1-hour, 2-hour, 3-hour, 4-hour, 5-hour, and 6-hour step ahead streamflow predictions. In addition, the comparison of the hybrid BART model with a baseline model such as super vector regression models is examined in this study. It is expected that the hybrid BART model has a robust performance and can be an optional choice in streamflow forecasting for urban basins.

Physics-based distributed rainfall-runoff models are now commonly used in a variety of hydrologic applications such as to estimate flooding, water pollutant transport, sedimentation yield and so on. Moreover, it is not surprising that GIS has become an integral part of hydrologic research since this technology offers abundant information about spatial heterogeneity for both model parameters and input data that control hydrological processes. This study presents the development of a distributed rainfall-runoff prediction system for the Guem river basin ($9,835km^2$) using an Object-oriented Hydrological Modeling System (OHyMoS). We developed three types of element modules: Slope Runoff Module (SRM), Channel Routing Module (CRM), and Dam Reservoir Module (DRM) and then incorporated them systemically into a catchment modeling system under the OHyMoS. The study basin delineated by the 250m DEM (resampled from SRTM90) was divided into 14 midsize catchments and 80 sub-catchments where correspond to the WAMIS digital map. Each sub-catchment was represented by rectangular slope and channel components; water flows among these components were simulated by both SRM and CRM. In addition, outflows of two multi-purpose dams: Yongdam and Daechung dams were calculated by DRM reflecting decision makers' opinions. Therefore, the Guem river basin rainfall-runoff modeling system can provide not only each sub-catchment outflow but also dam inand outflow at one hour (or less) time step such that users can obtain comprehensive hydrological information readily for the effective and efficient flood control during a flood season.
The relative contributions of overland-flow and stream-flow to the response process at the basin scale are evaluated in the present study. The moments of GIUH models were applied to the data of the Bocheong watershed in the Geum river basin in Korea in order to discuss the feasibility. The GIUH model derived in this study consists of the stream path and overland region. The characteristic velocities for the flows between two cases mentioned above make a clear distinction as expected and would have more physical meaning than the ones of the model by Rodriguez-Iturbe and Valdes(1979). The path lengths of overland for each stream order are nearly constant, whereas the case of stream is shown to grow larger according to the basin sizes. As a result, the overall basin response process was founded out to be greatly under the influence of the hydrodynamic behavior of overland, and its behavior is suggested to be further researched for catching the broader meanings.

Algae boom (Red tide) in south coastal area of Korea has been appeared several times during a decade. If algae boom appears in the desalination plant, media filter and UF filter are clogged quickly, and the plant should be shutdown. In general, Algae can be removed from water by flotation better than by sedimentation, because of the low density of algal cell. The purpose of this study conducts the CFD simulation of DAF flotation basin to apply the design of the dissolved air flotation with ball filter in the Test Bed for SWRO desalination plant. In this study, Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model was applied to simulate the behavior of air bubbles and seawater. Density difference model and gravity were used. But de-sludge process and mass transfer between air bubbles and seawater were ignored. Main parameter is hydraulic loading rate which is varied from 20 m/hr to 27.5 m/hr. Geometry of flotation basin were changed to improve the DAF performance. According to the result of this study, the increase of hydraulic loading rate causes that the flow in the separation basin is widely affected and the concentration of air is increased. The flow pattern in the contact zone of flotation basin is greatly affected by the location of nozzle header. When the nozzle header was installed not the bottom of the contact zone but the above, the opportunity of contact between influent and recycle flow was increased.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the snowmelt effects on the hydrological components, especially on the runoff, by using the soil water assessment tool(SWAT) which is a continuous semi-distributed long term rainfall-runoff model. The model was applied to the basin located in the upstream of the Chungju Dam. Some parameters in the snowmelt algorithm were estimated for the Chungju basin in order to reflect the snowmelt effects. The snowmelt effects were assessed by comparing the simulated runoff with the observed runoff data at the outlet of the basin. It was found out that the simulated runoff with considering the snowmelt component matches more satisfactorily to the observed one than without considering snowmelt effect. The simulation results revealed that the snowmelt effects were noticeable on March and April. Similar results were obtained at other two upstream gauging points. The effect of the elevation bands which distribute temperature and precipitation with elevation was analyzed. This study also showed that the snowmelt effect significantly affects the temporal distribution as well as quantity of the hydrological components. The simulated runoff was very sensitive to the change of temperature near the threshold temperature which the snowmelt can occur. However, the reason was not accounted for this paper, Therefore, further analyses related to this feature are needed.
At-site and regional frequency analyses of annual maximum 1-, 2-, and 3-days rainfall in Han River basin was performed and compared based on the regional L-moments algorithm. To perform regional frequency analysis, Han River basin was subdivided into 3 sub-basins such as South Han River, North Han River, and downstream regions. For each sub-basin, the discordancy and homogeneity tests were performed. As the results of goodness of fit tests, lognormal model was selected as an appropriate probability distribution for both South Han River and downstream regions and gamma-3 model for North han River region. From Monte carlo simulation, RBIAS and RRMSE of the estimated quantiles from regional frequency analysis and at-site frequency analysis were calculated and compared each other. Regional frequency analysis shows less RRMSE of the estimated quantiles than at-sites frequency analysis in overall return periods. The differences of BRMSE between two approaches increase as the return period increases. As a result, it is shown that regional frequency analysis performs better than at-site analysis for annual maximum rainfall data in Han River basin.
Wetland conservation plan has been established to protect ecologically important wetlands based on vegetation integrity, spatial distribution of endangered species, but recently more demands are concentrated on the landscape ecological approaches such as topological relationship, neighboring area, spatial arrangements between wetlands at the broad scale. Landscape ecological analysis and graph theory are conducted to identify spatial characteristics related to core nodes and weak links of wetland networks in Nakdong basin. Regular planar model, which is selected for wetland networks, is applied in the Nakdong basin. The analysis indicates that 5 regional groups and 4 core wetlands are extracted with 15km threshold distance. The IIC and PC values based on the binary and probability models suggest that the wetland group C composed of main stream of Nakdong river and Geumho river is the most important area for wetland network. Wetland conservation plan, restoration projected of damaged and weak links between wetlands should be proposed through evaluating the node, links, and networks from wetlands at the local to the regional scale in Nakdong basin.

Sustainable water resource management requires the assessment of hydrological variability in response to climate fluctuations and anthropogenic activities. Determining quantitative estimates of water balance and total basin discharge are of utmost importance to understand the variations within a basin. Hard-to-reach areas with few infrastructures, coupled with lengthy administrative procedures makes in-situ data collection and water management processes very difficult and unreliable. In this study, the hydrological behavior of Lake Chad whose extent, extreme climatic and environmental conditions make it difficult to collect field observations was examined. During a 10 year period [January 2003 to December 2013], dataset from space-borne and global hydrological models observations were analyzed. Terrestial water storage (TWS) data retrieved from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), lake level variations from Satellite altimetry, water fluxes and soil moisture from Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used for this study. Furthermore, we combined altimetry lake volume with TWS over the lake drainage basin to estimate groundwater and soil moisture variations. This will be validated with groundwater estimates from WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM) outputs. TWS showed similar variation patterns Lake water level as expected. The TWS in the basin area is governed by the lake's surface water. As expected, rainfall from GLDAS precedes GRACE TWS with a phase lag of about 1 month. Estimates of groundwater and soil moisture content volume changes derived by combining altimetric Lake Volume with TWS over the drainage basin are ongoing. Results obtained shall be compared with WaterGap Hydrology Model (WGHM) groundwater estimate outputs.

Climate change is a complex phenomenon having its impact on diverse sectors. Temperature and precipitation are two of the most fundamental variables used to characterize climate, and changes in these variables can have significant impacts on ecosystems, agriculture, and human societies. This study evaluated the historical (1981-2010) and future (2011-2100) climatic trends in the Seti-Gandaki basin of Nepal based on 5 km resolution Multi Model Ensemble (MME) of 18 Global Climate Models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) for SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-85 scenarios. For this study, ERA5 reanalysis dataset is used for historical reference dataset instead of observation dataset due to a lack of good observation data in the study area. Results show that the basin has experienced continuous warming and an increased precipitation pattern in the historical period, and this rising trend is projected to be more prominent in the future. The Seti basin hosts 13 operational hydropower projects of different sizes, with 10 more planned by the government. Consequently, the findings of this study could be leveraged to design adaptation measures for existing hydropower schemes and provide a framework for policymakers to formulate climate change policies in the region. Furthermore, the methodology employed in this research could be replicated in other parts of the country to generate precise climate projections and offer guidance to policymakers in devising sustainable development plans for sectors like irrigation and hydropower.

This study proposed a new method of preparing granular ethylene glycol/aliphatic detergent (EG/AD) model ice that has both strength and uniform thickness. Various sheets of granular model ice prepared in ice tanks are surveyed and their preparation procedures are analyzed. We not only made a new granular model ice using the EG/AD solution but also measured its thickness, strength, and density. In addition, we found that the strength of the model ice could be controlled by varying the time and air temperature in the consolidation phase. Based on the results of this study, we verified that granular EG/AD model ice can be prepared more uniformly and effectively than columnar EG/AD model ice. This study is intended to contribute to reducing the time required for the ice model test and the operation of the ice model basin.
