  • Based on the study conducted by Kim et al. (205a, b), an improved stability design method for evaluating the effective buckling lengths of beam-column members is proposed herein, using system elastic/inelastic buckling analysis and second-order elastic analysis. For this purpose, the stress-strain relationship of a column is inversely formulated from the reference load-carrying capacity proposed in design codes, so as to derive the tangent modulus of a column as a function of the slenderness ratio. The tangent stiffness matrix of a beam-column element is formulated using the so-called "stability functions," and elastic/inelastic buckling analysis Effective buckling lengths are then evaluated by extending the basic concept of a single simply-supported column to the individual members as one component of a whole frame structure. Through numerical examples of several structural systems and loading conditions, the possibilities of enhancement in stability design for frame structures are addressed by comparing their numerical results obtained when the present design method is used with those obtained when conventional stability design methods are used.

  • In this study, a simplified method of improving not only transverse shear stress but also shear strain based on the first-order shear deformation theory was developed. Unlike many established methods, such as the higher-order shear deformation and layerwise theories, this method can easily apply to finite elements as only $C^0$ continuity is necessary and the formulation of equations is very simple. The basic concept in this method, however, must be corrected:the distribution of the transverse shear stresses and shear strains through the thickness from the formulation based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. Therefore, the shear correction factors are no longer required, based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Numerical analyses were conducted to verify the validity of the proposed formulations. The solutions based on the simplified method were in very good agreement with the results considering the higher-order shear deformation theory.

  • In order to apply the leak before break (LBB) concept to nuclear piping systems, the dynamic strain aging effect of low carbon steel materials has to be taken into account, in compliance with the requirements of the Korean Standard Review Guide (KSRG) 3.6.3-1. For this goal, J-R tests are needed for a range of various temperatures and loading rates, including dynamic loading conditions. In the dynamic loading J-R test, the unloading compliance method can not be applied to measure the crack growth and direct current potential drop (DCPD) method; this method also has a problem defining the crack initiation point. The normalization method is known as a very useful method to determine the J-R curve under dynamic loading because it does not need additional equipment or complicated loading sequences such as electric current or unloading. This method was accepted by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) as a standard test method E1820 A15 in 2001. However, it has not yet been clearly verified yet if the normalization method is sufficiently reliable to be applied to LBB. In this study, the basic background of the J-integral, LBB and dynamic loading J-R test are explained, and the current status for dynamic loading J-R test methods are reviewed from the view point of LBB for nuclear piping. In particular, the theoretical and historical background of the normalization method which has received attention recently, is summarized. Recent studies for this method are introduced and future works are suggested that may improve the reliability of LBB for nuclear piping.

  • At present, the Department of Energy (DOE) in Unite State are directing the efforts of developing accident tolerant fuel (ATF) technology. As the first barrier of nuclear fuel system, the material selection of fuel rod cladding for ATFs is a basic but very significant issue for the development of this concept. The advanced cladding is attractive for providing much stronger oxidation resistance and better in-pile behavior under sever accident conditions (such as SBO, LOCA) for giving more coping time and, of course, at least an equivalent performance under normal condition. In recent years, many researches on in-plie or out-pile physical properties of some suggested cladding materials have been conducted to solve this material selection problem. Base on published literatures, this paper introduced relevant research backgrounds, objectives, research institutions and their progresses on several main potential claddings include triplex SiC, FeCrAl and MAX phase material Ti3SiC2. The physical properties of these claddings for their application in ATF area are also reviewed in thermohydraulic and mechanical view for better understanding and simulating the behaviors of these new claddings. While most of important data are available from publications, there are still many relevant properties are lacking for the evaluations.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a cycle-free signal timing model for minimizing delays based on Third-generation control concept using Genetic Algorithm. A special feature of this model is its ability to manage delays of turning movements on the cycle basis. The model produces a cycle-free based signal timing(cycles and green times) for each intersection to minimize delays of turning movements on the cycle basis. The performance of cycle-free signal timings was evaluated on normal (v/c = 0.7) and oversaturated (v/c=1.0) conditions. The performance measures are throughput and the number of queued vehicles at the end of green time. The result shows that the cycle free signal timing is superior to the fixed signal timing to manage traffic flows of intersections; (1) the proposed model accomplishes the basic objective of the research, producing cycle free signal timings on the cycle basis, (2) on normal conditions, cycle free signal timings produce less queued vehicles at the end of green time, and (3) on oversaturated conditions, the cycle free signal timing is superior to the fixed signal timing to manage saturated traffic flows of intersections.

  • As misalignments among images, identity, and legitimacy of health professionals and institutions have been on the rise, CEOs of health care organizations have been required to enhance organizational accountability. Despite the accumulation of literature on the conceptual discussions of accountability, only a few studies empirically investigated key barriers to accountability and its facilitators. To identify perception on accountability with key barriers and facilitators of organizational accountability, a semi-structured interview with 11 CEOs of Korean hospitals was conducted. A short survey was taken to get quantitative data on CEO's perception on organizational accountability. To CEOs, accountability was very complex and unfamiliar concept, but understood as physician's code of ethics by nature and basic principle of hospital management. CEOs thought accountability could be improved through ethical leadership, financial stability and learning climate of hospitals. Distrust of the government, which failed to provide economic incentives for hospitals to increase accountability activities, was emphasized as a serious barrier to hospital accountability. There was consensus among hospital CEOs as to the importance of accountability in management. However, there were concerns that, without policy instruments to motivate hospitals toward increasing community benefits as well as collective efforts among health professionals to rebuild moral climate for being accountable, greater accountability would not be achieved in hospitals.

  • To survive in the ever-changing environment, organizations need to improve or innovate their business processes. As a result, to attain this objective, BPM (Business Process Management) concept is widely adopted in modern enterprises. BPM life cycle consists of diagnosis, design, implementation and enactment. Conventionally, diagnosis of business process within the BPM life cycle is usually conducted by manual methods such as interviews, questionnaires and direct observations of process. And (re)designing business processes is also usually done manually under supervision of business experts from scratch. It is time-consuming and error-prone tasks. The objective of this research is to integrate the diagnosis and (re)design phase of BPM life cycle by sharing automatically generated process model and basic statistics in the diagnosis phase based on the process mining method. Eventually, this approach will lead to automate the tasks of diagnosis and design of business process. To implement and to show the usefulness of the proposed framework, two case studies were conducted in this research.

  • The inelastic response of many structural steel and reinforced concrete structures subject to extreme loadings can be characterized by elastoplastic behaviors. Although excursion beyond the elastic range is usually not permitted under normal conditions of service, the extent of permanent damage a structure may sustain when subjected to extreme conditions, such as severe blast or earthquake loading, is frequently of interest to the engineer. A blast is usually the result of an explosion defined as a "sudden expansion". This paper discusses the basic concept that defines blast loadings on structures and corresponding elastoplastic structural response (displacement, velocity, and acceleration) and try to explain a crack propagation of concrete in sudden expansion. According to nonlinear finite element analysis, the crack forms of static and dynamic states displayed different in RC structural members. This paper also provides useful data for the dynamic fracture analysis of RC frame structures.

  • A new simple method to estimate the earth quantity which is basic data for making the plan of mountain forest road is tried to develop as one of ways to reduce time cost of plan making. The zero-line surveying method, the concept of 2/3 road width in cut-away part and of same quantity between cut-away and fill-up earth which are the backgrounds to develop this method is introduced and explaned also it's theoritical propriety. Under the precondition which have to apply above concepts for constructing the mountain forest road the exchange table for estimating the earth quantity is made like table 3 and 4 through being calculated by a trigonometric function. Table 3 can be used to estimate the earth quantity on the cut-away road-width according to slope of terrain and different road-width, and table 4 can be applied to calculate the quantity of cut-away earth when to know the road-width of cut-away. When using these tables the performance of field surveying and office work for road plan will be highly increased.

  • This research is intended to study literatures relating to western rocking chairs style in early 20th century in order to provide basic data of designs for rockers of today in Korea and investigate characteristics of rocking chair from academic, formative and pragmatic perspectives. During the first half of 20th century, western rocking chairs (1925~1945) embodied actively the simple functionalism concept that furniture design must follow functionality considerations. Therefore, bare wood rocking chairs were without any surface decoration and tubular steel frame rocking chairs often included black leather upholstery in a bold attempt to express exposed structure. And the fact that tubular steel produced such lightweight furniture was crucial importance. Many Modernist designer created curvaceous lines of new pattern changes in their furniture. The structure of Modern rocking chair became all-important, for stylistic as well as functional reasons. Designers equated exposed structure of tubular steel and wooden frame with integrity and rationality and create an equalitarian style of design. Especially, designers in the early 20th century did use various brilliantly colored upholstery and wooden frame with simple forms of modern characteristics.
