  • Paraphrasing is the act of writing a text using other words without altering the meaning. Paraphrases can be used in many fields of natural language processing. In particular, paraphrases can be incorporated in machine translation in order to improve the coverage and the quality of translation. Recently, the approaches on paraphrase extraction utilize bilingual parallel corpora, which consist of aligned sentence pairs. In these approaches, paraphrases are identified, from the word alignment result, by pivot phrases which are the phrases in one language to which two or more phrases are connected in the other language. However, the word alignment is itself a very difficult task, so there can be many alignment errors. Moreover, the alignment errors can lead to the problem of selecting incorrect pivot phrases. In this study, we propose a method in paraphrase extraction that discriminates good pivot phrases from bad pivot phrases. Each pivot phrase is weighted according to its reliability, which is scored by considering the lexical and part-of-speech information. The experimental result shows that the proposed method achieves higher precision and recall of the paraphrase extraction than the baseline. Also, we show that the extracted paraphrases can increase the coverage of the Korean-English machine translation.

  • PURPOSE. To determine wear amount of single molar crowns, made from four different restoratives, and opposing natural teeth through computerized fabrication techniques using 3D image alignment. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 24 single crowns (N = 24 patients, age range: 18 - 50) were made from lithium disilicate (IPS E-max CAD), lithium silicate and zirconia based (Vita Suprinity CAD), resin matrix ceramic material (Cerasmart, GC), and dual matrix (Vita Enamic CAD) blocks. After digital impressions (Cerec 3D Bluecam, DentsplySirona), the crowns were designed and manufactured (Cerec 3, DentsplySirona). A dualcuring resin cement was used for cementation (Variolink Esthetic DC, Ivoclar). Then, measurement and recording of crowns and the opposing enamel surfaces with the intraoral scanner were made as well as at the third and sixth month follow-ups. All measurements were superimposed with a software (David-Laserscanner, V3.10.4). Volume loss due to wear was calculated from baseline to follow-up periods with Siemens Unigraphics NX 10 software. Statistical analysis was accomplished by Repeated Measures for ANOVA (SPSS 21) at = .05 significance level. RESULTS. After 6 months, insignificant differences of the glass matrix and resin matrix materials for restoration/enamel wear were observed (P>.05). While there were no significant differences between the glass matrix groups (P>.05), significant differences between the resin matrix group materials (P<.05) were obtained. Although Cerasmart and Enamic were both resin matrix based, they exhibited different wear characteristics. CONCLUSION. Glass matrix materials showed less wear both on their own and opposing enamel surfaces than resin matrix ceramic materials.

  • In Korean-English mixed documents, translated technical words are usually used with the attached full words or original words enclosed with parenthesis. In this paper, a collective method is presented to recognize and extract the translation phrases with using a base translation dictionary. In order to process the unregistered title words and translation words in the dictionary, a phonetic similarity matching method, a translation partial matching method, and a compound word matching method are newly proposed. The experiment result of each method was measured in F-measure(the alpha is set to 0.4) ; exact matching of dictionary terms as a baseline method showed 23.8%, the hybrid method of translation partial matching and phonetic similarity matching 75.9%, and the compound word matching method including the hybrid method 77.3%, which is 3.25 times better than the baseline method.

  • The purpose of this paper is to build a pronunciation lexicon with estimated likelihoods of the phonetic rules based on the phonetic realizations and therefore to improve the performance of CSR using the dictionary. In the baseline system, the phonetic rules and their application probabilities are defined with the knowledge of Korean phonology and experimental tuning. The advantage of this approach is to implement the phonetic rules easily and to get stable results on general domains. However, a possible drawback of this method is that it is hard to reflect characteristics of the phonetic realizations on a specific domain. In order to make the system reflect phonetic realizations, the likelihood of phonetic rules is reestimated based on the statistics of the realized phonemes using a forced-alignment method. In our experiment, we generates new lexica which include pronunciation variants created by reestimated phonetic rules and its performance is tested with 12 Gaussian mixture HMMs and back-off bigrams. The proposed method reduced the WER by 0.42%.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pelvic adjustment on low back pain and spino-pelvic parameters in middle-aged women. Thirty-eight middle-aged women with chronic low back pain were randomly assigned to the pelvic adjustment (n = 20) oruntreated control (n = 18) group. Pelvic adjustment interventionswereperformed four times a week for 8 weeksin the former group. At baseline and after 8 weeks, the back pain and back function were evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), and back flexibility. Additionally, the spino-pelvic radiographic parameters and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were assessed. After 8 weeks, the VAS, ODI, and back flexibility significantly improved in the pelvic adjustment group compared with the control group. It was found that the changes from baseline in the lumbar lordotic angle, sacral slope, pelvic crest unleveling, and femoral head height inequality were significantly greater in the pelvic adjustment group than in the control group. There were no significant changes in the pelvic incidence or serum CRP levels in either group. In conclusion, pelvic adjustment has beneficial effects on chronic low back pain and back function, suggesting that the effects of pelvic adjustment on back pain may at least in part result from changes in the spino-pelvic alignment.

  • Background: In previous studies, changes in postural alignment were found when the slope was changed during walking. Downhill walking straightens the trunk by shifting the line of gravity backward. Objects: This study investigated the effect of the downhill treadmill walking exercise (DTWE) on thoracic angle and thoracic erector spinae (TES) activation in subjects with thoracic kyphosis. Methods: A total of 20 subjects with thoracic kyphosis were recruited for this study. All the subjects performed the DTWE for 30 minutes. A surface EMG and 3D motion capture system were used to measure TES activation and thoracic angle before and after the DTWE. Paired t-tests were used to confirm the effect of the DTWE (p<.05). Results: Both the thoracic angle and TES activation had significantly increased after the DTWE compared to the baseline (p<.05). An increase in the thoracic angle indicates a decrease in kyphosis. Conclusion: The DTWE is effective for thoracic kyphosis patients as it decreases their kyphotic posture and increases the TES activation. Future longitudinal studies are required to investigate the long-term effects of the DTWE.

  • A method for gamma/neutron event classification based on frequency-domain analysis for mixed radiation environments is proposed. In contrast to the traditional charge comparison method for pulse-shape discrimination, which requires baseline removal and pulse alignment, our method does not need any preprocessing of the digitized data, apart from removing saturated traces in sporadic pile-up scenarios. It also features the identification of neutron events in the detector's full energy range with a single device, from thermal neutrons to fast neutrons, including low-energy pulses, and still provides a superior figure-of-merit for classification. The proposed frequency-domain analysis consists of computing the fast Fourier transform of a triggered trace and integrating it through a simplified version of the transform magnitude components that distinguish the neutron features from those of the gamma photons. Owing to this simplification, the proposed method may be easily ported to a real-time embedded deployment based on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays or Digital Signal Processors. We target an off-the-shelf detector based on a small CLYC (Cs2LiYCl6:Ce) crystal coupled to a silicon photomultiplier with an integrated bias and preamplifier, aiming at lightweight embedded mixed radiation monitors and dosimeter applications.

  • We isolated a 317 bp of partial cDNA for doublesex-and mab-3-related transcription factor-1 (DMRT-1) from the testis of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus using RT-PCR. Based on the multiple sequence alignment, olive flounder DMRT-1 shared relatively high sequence homology (82 to 94%) with orthologues from other teleost species such as Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, black porgy, Acanthopagrus schlegeli and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. DMRT-1 mRNA was predominantly expressed in the testis of olive flounder. In our investigation for the effect of testosterone treatment in vivo on induced expression of ovarian DMRT-1 transcript, mRNA levels of DMRT-1 in ovary were significantly up-regulated by testosterone treatments (0.3 or $3.0{\mu}g$ testosterone/g body weight for 12 to 36 hours) as judged by RT-PCR analysis. In overall, transcriptional stimulation of DMRT-1 during treatments was more affected by doses of testosterone than treatment durations. This result strongly suggests that the regulation of DMRT-1 be tissue- and gender-specific in olive flounder, and also provides useful baseline knowledge on the testosterone-mediated regulation in the reproductive physiology of this species.
