  • The purpose of the present research is to suggest implications on guidance of height concept understanding of figures by investigating concept understanding how sixth grade's elementary school students understand a height concept of figures. In order to achieve this research purpose, a height concept understanding test of figures was carried out with the target of 54 sixth grade students who already learned a height concept of plane figures and three-dimensional solid figures and thus this research analyzed characteristics and errors appeared there. When analyzing its characteristics and errors interviews with students were carried out for in-depth analysis. And as a result the following implications could be obtained. First, students felt more difficulty in measuring height in a figure that its lower base is not horizontal in questions measuring height of a plane figure. Second, there were cases that students associate a height concept of figures with experience of height experienced in daily life. Third, students were feeling difficulty in linguistically expressing a concept called height that oneself has. Expressing a concept linguistically plays an important role in understanding a concept clearly. Accordingly activities for raising this mathematical communication ability are required, Fourth, the present research can suggest implications in designing classes that students can clearly understand the height concept of figures.

  • Monitor height is one of the key factors in the VDT workstation design. Most of the previous studies have focused on traditional VDT workplace where the operators performed data entry or word processing tasks using single monitor. This study aimed to suggest proper monitor height when the main task was monitoring information from different number of information sources. Twelve male students participated in three experiments: single information source (one monitor), two information sources (one monitor and one CCTV), and three information sources (one monitor, one CCTV and a window). Subjects performed monitoring tasks for 10 minutes with 3 different monitor center heights : 89.0 cm (Low), 111.3 cm (Middle), and 124.8 cm (High). Surface EMG signals of five neck muscles, subjective discomfort ratings, preference, and working postures were recorded. Results indicated that the middle height was proper for one monitor condition, but the low monitor height was recommended for more than two information sources.

  • In general, a tripod-shaped foundation secures its verticality by repeating penetration and drawing when suction penetration is performed. These repetitive tasks not only require a skilled operator, but are also less efficient. In this study, an automatic slope control system was developed to verify the slope control performance based on tripod suction in a sandy soil environment. The slope of the tripod suction base was measured, and the relative height of each suction bucket was calculated from the center of the tripod with a formula. The control program reduces the pump output of the suction bucket that penetrates too quickly by controlling the suction pressure of each suction bucket by sending an on/off signal to the suction pump according to the relative height. With such repetitive work, the relative height converges to 0 and the verticality of the structure can be secured while suction penetration is performed. As a result of the experiment, the effect of controlling the slope depending on the optimal limit setting height and penetration depth was confirmed, and a vertical degree within 0.5° was ensured. When installing a tripod suction bucket, the automatic tilt control method using the relative height is efficient without relying on the experience of the operator.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate Ti-base abutment's three different heights and three different cement types on the pull-off force of zirconia-based restorations. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 fixture lab analogs were embedded in auto polymerizing resin bloack. 90 Ti-base abutments heights of 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm were scanned and zirconia restoration were prepared from scanned files. Zirconia restoration were cemented with three different types of cements (temporary, semi-permanent, permanent) following manufacturer's instructions. All 90 specimens were placed and tested in a universal testing machine for pull-out testing. Retention was measured by recording the force at load drop. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test for detecting whether there are any statistical significance along cement types or abutment heights. After that, Mann-Whitney test was used for figuring out differences regarding abutment height and the comparison between 3 cements. Results: Temp bond showed significantly lower pull-off force compared to Fujicem regardless of any abutment height. However, there were significant differences between Cem-implant and Fujicem in abutment height of 3 mm and 7 mm, but there was no significant difference in 5 mm. Temp bond and Cem-implant had significant differences only in abutment height of 5 mm. Conclusion: Although Ti-base abutment height did not influenced zirconia restorations' retentiveness, cement types showed significant differences.

  • The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the κ-εturbidence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on an unstructured adaptive grid system. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies are boattailing, base bleed, base combustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, turbulence flow and pressure charateristics have been studied for geometries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by step number, length and height. The flow over multistep aftoerbodies or base have many kinds of compressible flow characteristics including expansion waves at the trailing edge, recompression waves, separation and recirculating flow in the base region, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental data. The flow characteristics have been clearly shown.

  • The changes in earth pressure and ground settlement due to underground excavation near an existing retaining wall were studied experimentally according to the separation distance between the underground excavation and the retaining wall. In addition, this study attempted to experimentally prove that the arching phenomenon occurred during the construction of the underground space. A model tank having 120 cm in length, 160 cm in height, and 40 cm in width was manufactured to simulate underground excavation through the use of five separated base wall bodies. The variation of earth pressure on the retaining wall was measured according to the underground excavation phase through the use of 10 separated right wall bodies. The results showed that the earth pressure on the retaining wall was changed by the lowering of the first base bottom wall; however, the earth pressure was not changed significantly by the lowering of the third base bottom wall, since the third base wall had sufficient separation distance from the retaining wall. Lowering of the first base wall induced a decrease in the earth pressure in the lower part of the retaining wall; in contrast, lowering of the first base wall induced an increase in the earth pressure in the middle part of the retaining wall, proving the arching effect experimentally. It is necessary to consider the changes in earth pressure on the retaining wall in designing earth retaining structures for sections where the arching effect occurs.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the characteristics & the causative areas of the adult skeletal class III malocclusions with different facial divergency. The lateral cephalograms of 80 subjects with skeletal class III malocclusion from 17 to 29 years of age were classified into 3 groups according to SN-MP angle; hypodivergent group $(21.65{\pm}3.52^{\circ})$, neutrodivergent group $(30.50{\pm}2.29^{\circ})$ and hyperdivergent group $(40.02{\pm}3.98^{\circ})$. The data were gathered by digitizing of the traced cephalograms and were statistically analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. The anterior cranial base of the hyperdivergent group was shortest & tipped upwardly to the FH plane. 2. The maxilla of hyperdivergent group was shortest anteroposteriorly and positioned posteriorly to the anterior cranial base. 3. The degree of the mandibular prognathism in hyperdivergent group was less than the hypodivergent group. The hyperdivergent group showed the downward & backward rotated mandible. 4. The mandibular ramus & body was short & slender in the hyperdivergent group and the gonial angle was greatest in the hyperdivergent group. 5. The temporomandibular joint was positioned more superiorly to the anterior cranial base in the hyperdivergent group. 6. The cranial base, palatal plane, occlusal plane and mandibular plane were diverged in the hyperdivergent group. And this group had a great anterior total facial height, especially anterior lower facial height. 7. The craniofacial characteristics of skeletal class III malocclusion were critical in the vertical structure than the horizontal.

  • The objective of this study was to understand the major changes of craniofacial dimensions and spatial growth pattern during the late embryonic and fetal period of human fetures. This study was performed with the selective materials of normal fetuses received from the Registry of Congenital Malformation of Seoul National University Hospital. The specimens consisted of nineteen embryos and sixty-six fetuses. The photomicrographs from mid-segittal sections of embryos were used for angular measurement, and the lateral cephalograms taken with soft X-ray were also measured in liners and angular aspects. All of the anatomical landmarks for the tracing of the photomicrographs and cephalograms were referred to the previous reports on literature. The sequential changes of prenatal craniofacial dimensions and agles were analysed statistically and discussed on the focus about the developmental growth directions of human ore-facial structure arised from heterogeneous origins. The results are as follows, 1) Cranial base angle was almost formed at about 6 weeks old embryos with the average angle of $127.4{\pm}6.33^{\circ}$ (n=3) and it was almost constant onwards. 2) The linear increase rates of anterior cranial base length and anterior facial height exceeded those of the posterior cranial base length and posterior facial height, and the maxilla grows more rapidly on the horizontal dimension than the vertical dmension during the fetal period. 3) The angular relationship between the anterior cranial base and palatal plane decreasedslightly during the fetal period, disclosing $11^{\circ}$ at 12th week gestation and $5^{\circ}$ at 41th weeks gestation. 4) Genial angle was maintained almost constantly at about $130^{\circ}$ during the fetal period from 12 weeks to 41 weeks of gestation.

  • This study was performed in 14 unthinned Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris L. var. mongolica Litvin) plantations in northeast China. Data were collected on 70 sample trees of different canopy position with diameter at breast height (DBH) ranging from 6.9 cm to 34.5 cm. Diameter and length of knots per whorl below the living crown were studied by different vertical levels divided by relative knot height (RHK) in this paper. Models taking DBH and height to the crown base (HCB) as independent variables were developed to predict knot diameter (KD) in a sample whorl. According to the vertical distribution tendency and range of sound knot length (KLsound), KLsound was modeled as multiple linear function of DBH, KD and relative knot height (RHK). The loose knot length (KLloose) was described as a function of DBH, KD and height above the ground for knots (HK) in a mixed log-linear model. Results from this study can provide abundant knot information so as to describe the knot size and vertical distribution tendency of Mongolian pine plantation.

  • This study aim was to understand the effects of the change of the sleeve cap height on the sleeve cap line and the sleeve appearance by making nine different sleeve cap height patterns. When a subject sews the virtual and real garments with this, it provides data base through which she can make the suitable sleeve by conducting a comparative analysis of the appearance and cross-sectional diagram and grasping the relation between the sleeve cap line ease and the shape of the sleeve. As a result of the analysis of the image of 3D virtual garment, the shape of the armscye and the position of the bust line and sleeve baseline, the sleeve cap height and the sewing ease of the sleeve cap line affect on the shape of the sleeve and the armscye. Although the real garment is slightly different from the virtual garment they have shown similar tendency. Therefore, if the 3D virtual clothing system is used appropriately, it is possible to expect various study results in the apparel field without making real garments.
