Barriers to Participation in a Randomized Controlled Trial of Qigong Exercises Amongst Cancer Survivors: Lessons Learnt

  • Background: Clinical trials on cancer subjects have one of the highest dropout rates. Barriers to recruitment range from patient-related, through institutional-related to staff-related factors. This paper highlights the low response rate and the recruitment barriers faced in our Qigong exercises trial. Materials and Method: The Qigong trial is a three-arm trial with a priori power size of 114 patients for 80% power. The University Malaya Medical Centre database showed a total of 1,933 patients from 2006-2010 and 751 patients met our inclusion criteria. These patients were approached via telephone interview. 131 out of 197 patients attended the trial and the final response rate was 48% (n=95/197). Results: Multiple barriers were identified, and were regrouped as patient-related, clinician-related and/or institutional related. A major consistent barrier was logistic difficulty related to transportation and car parking at the Medical Centre. Conclusions: All clinical trials must pay considerable attention to the recruitment process and it should even be piloted to identify potential barriers and facilitators to reduce attrition rate in trials.

99mTc(CO)3-Labeled Histidine-Arylpiperazines as Potential Radiotracers for a Neuroreceptor Targeting

  • In order to develop radiopharmaceuticals for targeting a serotonin receptor such as $5-HT_{1A}$, histidine-$C_n$-arylpiperazines (AP) (C = alkyl, n = 2, 3, 4) were prepared in five steps with yields of 25%, 37% and 51%, respectively, and radiolabeled with the $[^{99m}Tc(CO)_3(H_2O)+3]^+$. The $^{99m}Tc(CO)_3$-Histidine-Cn-APs were prepared with a high yield (>99%) and characterized as a tridentate complex with a neutral charge to pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The rhenium complexes with $Re(CO)_3$ were also synthesised and comparative experiments were achieved to evaluate the nature of the $^{99m}Tc$ complexes.

A Study of Current Tendency of Universal Design (유니버설 디자인의 최근 성향 분석 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to scrutinize the current tendency of Universal Design. The analysis unit was presentation in the proceeding of "The first International Universal Design Conference" which was held at New York in June, 1998. Sixty the presentations in the conference were analyzed using Content Analysis technique. The analysis criteria were academic vs. practical, themes, subjects, levels of UD concepts, design principles applied, and type of disability. The results were as follows. Compared with its early characteristics such as practical approach, architectural living environment, barrier free for the disabled, especially for person with mobile disability using wheelchair, and the emphasis of accessibility, UD characteristics shown in the conference evidenced a dramatic shift from them toward the new century : Its subjects became a wide range of people including the disabled departing from 'the disabled' only; The range of disability was expanded to include visual and audial disability departing from mobility only; Themes appeared very diverse such as both small and large scale environments, products, dissemination, and theory from the 'architectural environment'; Various design principles were added to early accessibility ; Commercialism was added to early Welfarism. Therefore, this conference provided empirical evidence that UD changed considerably from its early development in many aspects. It indicated the potential of UD as a big wave in the 21st century design.

Evaluation of the effect of smart façade systems in reducing dynamic response of structures subjected to seismic loads

  • To date the engineering community has seen facade systems as non-structural elements with high aesthetic value and a barrier between the outdoor and indoor environments. The role of facades in energy use in a building has also been recognized and the industry is also witnessing the emergence of many energy efficient facade systems. This paper will focus on using exterior skin of the double skin facade system as a dissipative movable element during earthquake excitation. The main aim of this study is to investigate the potential of the facade system to act as a damper system to reduce earthquake-induced vibration of the primary structure. Unlike traditional mass dampers, which are usually placed at the top level of structures, the movable/smart double skin facade systems are distributed throughout the entire height of building structures. The outer skin is moveable and can act as a multi tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) that move and dissipate energy during strong earthquake motions. In this paper, using a three dimensional 10-storey building structure as the example, it is shown that with optimal choice of materials for stiffness and damping of brackets connecting the two skins, a substantial portion of earthquake induced vibration energy can be dissipated which leads to avoiding expensive ductile seismic designs. It is shown that the engineering demand parameters (EDPs) for a low-rise building structures subjected to moderate to severe earthquakes can be substantially reduced by introduction of a smart designed double skin system.

Phylogeography of the Lessonia variegata species complex (Phaeophyceae, Laminariales) in New Zealand

  • A goal of phylogeography is to relate phylogenetic patterns to potential historic and contemporary geographic isolating events. Genetic breaks found in phylogeographic studies may denote boundaries between more generally applicable biogeographic regions. We investigated the distribution of Lessonia variegata, an important habitat forming alga, found on most rocky shores around New Zealand’s main islands, plus related species from surrounding waters. L. variegata has been shown to consist of four distinct cryptic species. Our aim was to compare the distribution of L. variegata with proposed bioregions; and to develop phylogeographic hypotheses to explain its present day distribution. Both a mitochondrial (atp8-sp) and plastid (RuBisCo spacer) marker, with different mutation rates, were used to gain information of the phylogenetic history of Lessonia. The data revealed high phylogeographic structuring and reciprocal endemism for all L. variegata cryptic species. One species (L. variegata / N) is confined to the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand; L. variegata / W is found at the southeast of the North Island and the northern South Island; L. variegata / K is endemic to the northeast South Island; and L. variegata / S is restricted to the southern part of the South Island. No overlapping areas of L. variegata species distribution were found. The data showed that genetic breaks in Lessonia do mostly correlate to bioregions, and highlight the importance of Cape Campbell at the northeast of the South Island and East Cape in the North Island, well known phylogeographic breaks, as a barrier between adjacent species.

Si Nanowire 크기에 따른 Gate-all-around Twin Si Nanowire Field-effect Transistors의 전기적 특성

  • 좋은 전기적 특성을 가지면서 소자의 크기를 줄이기에 용이한 Gate-all-around (GAA) twin Si nanowire field-effect transistors (TSNWFETs)의 연구가 많이 진행되고 있다. Switching 특성과 단채널 효과가 없는 TSNWFETs의 특성은 GAA 구조의 본질적인 특성이다. TSNWFETs는 기존의 single Si nanowire TSNWFETs와 bulk FET에 비하여 Drive current가 nanowire의 지름에 많은 영향을 받지 않는다. 그러나 TSNWFETs의 전체 on-current는 훨씬 작고 nanowire의 지름이 작아지면서 줄어들게 되면서 소자의 sensing speed와 sensing margin 특성의 악화를 가지고 온다. GAA TSNWFETs의 제작 및 전기적 실험에 대한 연구는 많이 진행되었으나, GAA TSNWFETs의 전기적 특성에 대한 이론적 연구는 매우 적다. 본 연구에서는 GAA TSNWFETs의 nanowire 크기에 따른 전기적 특성을 관찰하였다. GAA TSNWFETs와 bulk FET의 전기적 특성을 양자역학을 고려하여 3차원 TCAD 시뮬레이션을 툴을 이용하여 계산하였다. GAA TSNWFETs와 bulk FET의 전류-전압 특성 계산을 통해 on-current 크기, subthreshold swing, drain-induced barrier lowering (DIBL), gate-induced drain leakage를 보았다. 전류가 흐르는 경로와 전기적 특성의 물리적 의미에 대한 연구를 위해 TSNWFETs에서의 전류 밀도, conduction band edge, potential 특성을 분석하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 Switching 특성, 단채널 효과에 대한 면역 특성, nanowire의 단면적에 따른 전류 흐름을 보았다. nanowire의 크기가 작아지면서 DIBL이 증가하고 문턱전압과 전체 on-current는 감소하면서 소자의 특성이 악화된다. 이러한 결과는 GAA TSNWFETs의 전기적 특성을 이해하고 좋은 소자 특성을 위한 구조를 연구하는데 많은 도움이 될 것이다.

Work Function Modification of Indium Tin Oxide Thin Films Sputtered on Silicon Substrate

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) has a lot of variations of its properties because it is basically in an amorphous state. Therefore, the differences in composition ratio of ITO can result in alteration of electrical properties. Normally, ITO is considered as transparent conductive oxide (TCO), possessing excellent properties for the optical and electrical devices. Quantitatively, TCO has transparency over 80 percent within the range of 380nm to 780nm, which is visible light although its specific resistance is less than $10-3{\Omega}/cm$. Thus, the solar cell is the best example for which ITO has perfectly matching profile. In addition, when ITO is used as transparent conductive electrode, this material essentially has to have a proper work function with contact materials. For instance, heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT) solar cell could have both front ITO and backside ITO. Because each side of ITO films has different type of contact materials, p-type amorphous silicon and n-type amorphous silicon, work function of ITO has to be modified to transport carrier with low built-in potential and Schottky barrier, and approximately requires variation from 3 eV to 5 eV. In this study, we examine the change of work function for different sputtering conditions using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). Structure of ITO films was investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Improvement of Permeation of Applied Multi-layer Encapsulation of Thin Films on Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) (고분자 기판위에 다층 구조의 박막형 보호층을 적용한 투습률 향상)

  • In this paper, the inorganic-organic thin film encapsulation layer was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam, Sputter and Spin-Coater system, the various kinds of inorganic and organic thin-films were deposited onto the Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) and their interface properties between organic and inorganic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the SiON and Polyimide(PI) layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the WVTR(water vapour transition rate) for PET can be reduced from level of $0.57\;g/m^2{\cdot}day$ (bare subtrate) to $1{\times}10^{-5}\;g/m^2{\cdot}day$ after application of a SiON and Polyimide layer. These results indicates that the SiON/PI/SiON/PI/PET barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

  • To determine the effect of additions of trivalent and pentavalent ions on the electrical conductivity and sensing behaviour, indium and antimony were incorporated in tin oxide by the coprecipitation method. Antimony may be considered to enter the cassiterite structure as pentavalent ions, thermal energy could excite electrons from these ions into the conduction band. Similarly the indium ions would enter the lattice as $In^{3+}$ but could accept electrons from the valence band, thereby becoming monovalent or divalent. These phenomena, however, how the potential barrier existing $SnO_{2}$ by addition of two kinds of ions could influence on the sensing behaviour in comparison with their influence on the resistivity were observed.
