  • Cobalt and VC powders were ball milled with M2 grade high speed steel powders under various ball to powder ratios. The powders milled under higher ball to powder ratio become finer, more irregular and have a broader size distribution, and thus possess a lower compressibility and a better sinterability regarding densification. Increasing the ball to powder ratio lowered the sintering temperature to obtain the density level necessary to isolate all the pores. Lowering the sintering temperature is very critical to maintain fine microstructure since grain and carbide coarsening are accelerated by higher sintering temperature due to more liquid phase formation. The powders obtained by ball milling at 20 to 1 ratio has the lowest compressibility but has the best sinterability, almost compatible to unmilled pure M2 powders. A sintered body over 97% theoretical density with fine microstructures having average grain size of ~10 microns was obtained from the powder by sintering at 1260 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum. XRD results indicate that two types of carbides are mainly present in the sintered structure, MC and $M_{6}C$ type. The MC type carbides are more or less round shaped and mainly located at the grain boundaries whereas the $M_{6}C$ type are angular shaped and mainly located inside the grains.

  • This paper presents theoretical analysis of the NRRO(non-repeatable run-out) for a ball bearing with geometric imperfection. The 3DOF dynamic analysis of a ball bearing using the Newton-Raphson method is performed to calculate the displacement of shaft center. Frequency and magnitude characteristics of radial and axial vibrations are investigated. The ball form errors of the ball, the inner race, and the outer race in a HDD spindle ball bearing are precisely measured. NRRO of a ball bearing is analyzed by using the measured waviness data. It is concluded that dominant components of radial vibrations are ${\Large}f_c\;and\;2{\Larg}f_b{\pm}{\Large}f_c$, and dominant component of axial vibrations is $2{\Large}f_b$. These are generated by the size error and the second waviness of the balls.

Numerous contaminants are release into marine sediment and it significantly affect marine aquatic environment. In the present study stated the optimize the biostimulant ball (BSB) in coastal sedimentand stabilse the heavy metals present in the sediment. The effective variables like BSB size, distance and month variables on Cu stabilization was determined by using Response surface methodology(RSM). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and coefficient determination (R2) of Cu reduction 0.9610 and maximum stabilisation was obtained in 3cm ball size and 5.5cm distance and 4 month interval time. This result revealed that the BSB in effective for Cu reduction in coastal sediment.

In the present study evaluated the optimization of slow release biostimulant ball (BSB) in coastal sediment in busan. The effective variables like BSB size, distance and month variables on VS reduction was determined by using Response surface methodology(RSM). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and coefficient determination (R2) of VS was 0.9369 and maximum reduction of VS was obtained in 3cm ball size and 5.5cm distance and 4 month interval time. This result revealed that the BSB in effective VS reduction in coastal sediment.

  • For the present study, the cryogenic ball milling process was applied to make Ibuprofen microsized. The cryogenic ball milling was performed at low temperature of about -18$0^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. The particle size distribution was determined before and after the cryogenic process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement was made to determine the effect of cryogenic process on the crystallinity of Ibuprofen. The results showed that the size of Ibuproffn was reduced about 10 times by the cryogenic process. The degree of crystallinity of Ibuproffn was slightly reduced by the cryogenic process.

  • In this study, we have developed Sn-Ag alloy by a simple high energy ball milling technique. We have ball-milled the eutectic mixture of Sn and Ag powders for a period of 45 h. The milled powder for 45 h was characterized for particle size and morphology. Microstructural investigations were carried out by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. The melting behavior of 45 h milled powder was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The resultant crystallite size of the Sn(Ag) solid solution was found to be 85 nm. The melting point of the powder was 213.6℃ after 45 h of milling showing depression of ≈6℃ in melting point as compared to the existing Sn-3.5Ag alloys. It was also reported that the wettability of the Sn-3.5Ag powder was significantly improved with an increase in milling time up to 45 h due to the nanocrystalline structure of the milled powder.

  • Ni 8 wt.%-doped tin oxide ($SnO_2$) thick films were fabricated into gas sensors by the method of screen printing onto alumina substrates. The particle size of $SnO_2$ was controlled by changing the ball-mill time between 0~120 h. The structural and morphological properties of these thick films were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The structural properties of $SnO_2$ powders showed a tetragonal phase with (110) dominant orientation. The particle size of the $SnO_2$:Ni powders after ball-mill of 120 h was about 0.05 ${\mu}m$. The gas sensitivity (S = Rg/Ra) to 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas was measured at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air (Ra) with that of the target gases (Rg). The sensitivity of the $SnO_2$ gas sensors was enhanced by increasing the ball-mill time. There was an association between the sensitivity of both the $CH_4$ gas and the $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas and the particle size of the $SnO_2$. $SnO_2$ gas sensors prepared by 72 h ball-mill showed a sensitivity of about 13 to 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas. The response time of the $SnO_2$:Ni gas sensors to the $CH_4$ gas was about 20 seconds.

  • Inorganic-organic hybrid material such as vinyl-nano sized silica ball was synthesized by acrylo-alkoxysilane and nano silica ball with different particle size. And then they were formulated into acrylic-melamine clearcoat. This material is fully characterized with various analytical methods and applied for strength measurement. The glossy effect, matting effect and anti-scratching properties of materials were investigated for further growth and maintenance. When the particle size of nano silica ball is 20~30 nm, the glossy retain effect was increased by 7% compared to bare acrylic-melamine clearcoat. When a commercially available silica Aerosil 200 (Hydrophilic fumed silica, average particle size 12 nm, Degussa) react with vinyl alkoxysilane vinyl-fumed silica complex form. The vinyl-fumed silica along with clearcoat increases only 2% increase at glossy retain. Nano-scratch test results also support the glossy retain effect of vinyl nano-sized silica ball in clearcoat.

  • Three-body abrasive wear resistance of mild steel, low alloy steel (Bisalloy) and 27%Cr white cast iron was investigated using a ball-cratering test. Glass beads, silica sand, quartz and alumina abrasive particles with sizes larger than $100{\mu}m$ were used to make slurries. It was found that the wear rates of all three materials tested increased with time when angular abrasive particles were used and were rather constant when round particles were used. This increase in wear rates was mainly due to the gradual increase in ball surface roughness with testing time. Abrasive particles with higher angularity caused higher ball surface roughness. Mild steel and Bisalloy were more affected by this ball surface roughness changes than the hard white cast iron. Generally, three-body rolling wear dominated. The contribution of two-body grooving wear increased when the ball roughness was significant. More grooves were found when round particles were used or the size of the particles was decreased.
