  • A study involving nutrient balances and radioisotope labeling techniques was undertaken to study energy and protein metabolism, and glucose kinetics of female crossbred Etawah goats, using 12 weaned (BW $14.0{\pm}2.0kg$), 12 late pregnant (BW $27.8{\pm}1.8kg$) and 12 first lactation does (BW $25.0{\pm}5.0kg$). Each class of animal was randomly allotted into 3 dietary treatment groups R1, R2 and R3, that received 100%, 85%, and 70% of ad libitum feed. The rations offered were pellets containing 21.8% CP and 19.3 MJ GE/kg, except for the lactating does who received pellets (17.2% CP and 18.9 MJ GE/kg) and fresh Penisetum purpureum grass. Energy and nitrogen balance studies were conducted during a two-week trial. Daily heat production (HP, estimated by the carbon dioxide entry rate technique), glucose pool and flux were measured. Equations were found for metabolizable energy (ME) and protein intake (IP) requirements for growing goats: ME (MJ/d)=1.87+0.55 RE-0.001 ADG+0.044 RP $(R^2=0.89)$ and IP (g/d)=48.47+2.99 RE+0.029 ADG+0.79 RP $(R^2=0.90)$; for pregnant does: ME (MJ/d)=5.92+0.96 RE-0.002 ADG+0.003 RP $(R^2=0.99)$ and IP (g/d)=58.34+5.41 RE+0.625 ADG-0.30 RP $(R^2=0.98)$; and for lactating does: ME (MJ/d)=4.23+0.713 RE+0.003 ADG+0.006 RP+0.002 MY $(R^2=0.86)$; IP (g/d)=84.05-5.36 RE+0.055 ADG-0.16 RP+0.068 MY $(R^2=0.45)$, where RE is retained energy (MJ/d), ADG is average daily gain in weight (g/d), RP is retained protein (g/d) and MY is milk yield (ml/d). ME and IP requirements for maintenance for growing goats were 0.46 MJ/d.kg $BW^{0.75}$ and 7.43 g/d.kg $BW^{0.75}$, respectively. Values for the pregnant and lactating does were in the same order, 0.55 MJ/d.kg $BW^{0.75}$ and 11.7 g/d.kg $BW^{0.75}$, and 0.50 MJ/d.kg $BW^{0.75}$ and 10.8 g/d.kg $BW^{0.75}$, respectively. Milk protein ranged from 3.06 to 3.5% and milk fat averaged 5.2%. Glucose metabolism in Etawah crossbred female goat is active, but glucose flux is low compared to temperate ruminant breeds which may implicate its role to support production.

  • The effects of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), ecdysone (20-hydroxyecdysone, 20-E) and HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) on the ovarian maturation of the fleshy shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis were investigated. Adult female fleshy shrimps were injected with 5-HT ($5{\mu}g$/g body weight (BW) or $20{\mu}g$/g BW), 20-E ($5{\mu}g$/g BW, $10{\mu}g$/g BW or $20{\mu}g$/g BW) or HCG (5 IU/g BW or 10 IU/g BW) three times at 5-day intervals and were sacrificed 10 days after the last injection. The effects were compared against an intact control group and sham control group which received the injection of sterile saline solution as a vehicle. 20-E and HCG showed no effectiveness on ovarian maturation in fleshy shrimps. However flesh shrimp given 5-HT of $20{\mu}g$/g BW showed significant increase in gonadosomatic index (GSI) in early spring. The results suggest that treatment of 5-HT of $20{\mu}g$/g BW or more is useful approach for the nursery production of the fleshy shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis aquaculture.

  • This study was conducted to examine effects of mating type on the growth traits in an $F_2$ population produced by reciprocal intercrosses between Landrace and the Jeju Native Black pig (JBP). The $F_2$ progeny were produced by two different mating types based on the grand dams of founder breeds JBP (Cross_1) and Landrace (Cross_2). The body weights at 21 days after birth (BW21D) was significantly different between Cross_1 and Cross_2 (P<0.05), showing that the BW21D of Cross_1 has about 0.25 kg heavier than Cross_2. The significant differences were found between males and females for the growth traits including the body weights (BWB, BW21D, BW70D and BW140D) and average daily gains (ADG, eADG and lADG) (P<0.05). Males were heavier BWB, BW21D and BW140D levels, and higher ADG and lADG levels than females. On the other hand, females had heavier BW70D and higher eADG levels than those of males. When considering the mating types and sex simultaneously the Cross_2 males had the heaviest BW140D among the combinations of cross and sex. In conclusion, it is desirable to choose Landrace as grand dams in the reciprocal intercrosses between Landrace and JBP for producing their progeny construction and to plan the production of $F_2$ males for industrial purposes. These results suggested that it may be one of useful strategies to improve the productivity through out selection of the mating type of founder breeds and the progeny sex, especially in Landrace, JBP and their related populations.

  • Five experiments were conducted to evaluate blood urea nitrogen (BUN) as a potential index of feed efficiency (G/F) and lean growth in growing-finishing pigs. Exp. 1 was conducted to examine the relationship between feeding protocol and BUN values. Fasted-refed pigs exhibited BUN peaks 3 h post-prandially while those given ad libitum access to diet had inconsistent BUN patterns in 10 h blood sampling with an 1 h interval. In Exp. 2 and 3, it was revealed that the peak BUN values were negatively correlated (p<0.01) with G/F in both barrows and gilts at 20 kg body weight (BW) and 50 kg to 90 kg BW. In Exp. 4, it was found that BUN values between 55 kg and 70 kg BW, when lean gain is maximized, were best correlated with average daily lean gain (ADLG). In Exp. 5, 18 barrows and 21 gilts were used to examine the relationship between BUN values at 65 kg BW and ADLG from birth to market weight. The BUN values at 65 kg BW and ADLG were negatively correlated (p<0.01) in both genders. These experiments demonstrated that there was a correlation between peak BUN values, and G/F and ADLG under specific circumstances.

  • Satiety cues a feeding animal to cease further ingestion of food, thus protecting it from excessive energy gain. Impaired control of satiety is often associated with feeding-related disorders such as obesity. In our recent study, we reported the identification of a neural pathway that expresses the myoinhibitory peptide (MIP), critical for satiety responses in Drosophila. Targeted silencing of MIP neuron activity strikingly increased the body weight (BW) through elevated food intake. Similarly, genetic disruption of the gene encoding MIP also elevated feeding and BW. Suppressing the MIP pathway behaviorally transformed the satiated flies to feed similar to the starved ones, with augmented sensitivity to food. Conversely, temporal activation of MIP neuron markedly reduced the food intake and BW, and blunted the sensitivity of the starved flies to food as if they have been satiated. Shortly after termination of MIP neuron activation, the reduced BW reverted to the normal level along with a strong feeding rebound. Together our results reveal the switch-like role of the MIP pathway in feeding regulation by controlling satiety.

  • The frequency of the second chromosomes bearing deleterious genes in the Anyang natural population of Korea in Drosophila melanogaster was repeatedly estimated during the period from 1971 through 1973. 1) The frequency of lethal and semilethal chromosomes was calculated to be 28.2%, and the frequencies were maintained without fluctuation for three years. 2) Allelism rate between lethal genes isolanted from each year was 0.77% on the average. The rate of elimination of lethal genes $(IQ^2)$ was estimated to be 0.0008. 3) The frequency of sterile gene on the second chromosomes was estimated to be 9.1% for females, 6.8% for males and 2.0% for both sexes, respectively. 4) Recessive visible mutant genes, namely rbl and bw genes, were frequently extracted when the chromosomes were revealed in homozygous. The frequencies of these mutants were found to be 1.3% for bw genes and 2.7% for rbl genes, respectively.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of ginseng saponin from Korean red ginseng on the learning and memory. Total (50, 100 mg/kg, bw) and panaxadiol saponin (15, 30 mg/kg, bw) treated groups did not show the difference of the time score and the number of error in comparison with control group. Panaxatriol saponin (15, 30 mg/kg, bw) significantly decreased both the time score and the number of error in water maze test. These results indicate that panaxatriol saponin from Korean red ginseng may improve the learning ability of rat in water multiple T-maze.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of martial art type and target height on the ground reaction force factors during Dollyuchagi motion. Data were collected using force plate. Five Taekwondo players and five Hapkido players were tested during Dollyuchagi motion to three different target heights(0.8, 1.2, 1.6 m). After analysis of kinetics using force plate data, maximum vertical ground reaction force was 1.62~2.44 BW, and impulse was $0.66\sim1.01 BW{\cdot}s$. Even though there was no difference for maximum ground reaction forces and impulse between Hapkido and Taekwondo, as target height was higher, impulse increased. Anterior-posterior and vertical ground reaction forces at kicking foot take-off were greater with target height, although there was no difference for medio-lateral force with target height. At impact there was significant difference for anterior-posterior ground reaction force between Hapkido and Taekwondo players. Taekwondo players' force (range, -0.23~-0.26 BW) was greater than Hapkido players's force (range, -0.08~-0.14 BW).

따라서 본 논문에서는 가역의 L-SSKF(Lossless Symmetric Short Kernel Filter)를 사용한 계층적 대역분할로 영상화소 사이의 상관성을 줄인 후 BW변환을 하는 방법과 GAP(Gradient Adjusted Prediction)를 사용하여 LL 대역에 많이 분포된 상관성을 줄인 후 BW변환을 하는 방법을 제안한다.
