  • Recently, the adoption of BIM technology in domestic civil engineering projects has continually increased both in its numbers and scope. However, the BIM model was developed and used after the 2D design was developed instead of creating the BIM model from the conceptual design phase. BIM must be used throughout every phase of design and construction to use BIM for its original purpose. However, if BIM application is applied in heavy civil projects without a step-by-step guideline, it can confuse the market and face industry resistance to using BIM. Therefore, BIM is currently being used step by step in the civil engineering field by using BIM as a conversion design. However, the BIM conversion design method, currently being performed in the Preliminary design stage, has many difficulties due to low work efficiency. This paper analyzes the existing process of converting a 2D design into a 3D BIM model while addressing the issues related to its low work efficiency. To this end, a novel approach to 2D to BIM conversion for the design development stage is proposed.

  • In order to apply the BIM technology effectively and efficiently during the life-cycle of project, it is important to deliver a accurate information on BIM from designer, and it should be used effectively at construction or maintenance stage. However, stakeholders have created a new BIM model at each phase in many practise adopting BIM, not used BIM generated in design stage. Because they have different purposes for using BIM, and deliver the BIM model without the sufficient explanation or application. It is necessary to define the range of usable BIM in construction phase with analyzing clearly the BIM created in design phase, and determining the difference with required BIM in construction phase. Therefore, this study propose a method for construction c

  • There is the difference of criteria to apply guidelines among the project participants and to depend on the purpose of utilizing BIM models, although modeling criteria are basically provided through BIM guidelines. Therefore, it is quite important to check compliance with guidelines to raise quality of the BIM model. But Quality Checking (QC) items and method for BIM model modeled in accordance with guidelines is not provided. This study suggested QC items and Rule Specifications(RS) for automatic QC. First of all, QC items were derived by analyzing domestic BIM guidelines and a process for structuring natural language is conducted by utilizing flowchart and pseudocode. So, by combining them, RS was suggested. Finally, RS-based case study was conducted by implementing automatic QC process with solibri model checker$^{TM}$. This study will contribute to the improvement of design quality and completeness of BIM model including huge data of 3 dimension. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop BIM guidelines according to the use case and to provide detailed process and standard for QC of BIM model.

  • In the Chinese construction industry, the utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) aims to increase the total output of the construction industry by solving the problem of inefficient interoperability in the construction industry. In 2011, the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development despite the technical advantages of BIM and the government policy, the BIM adoption rate in China is lower than 45%. Meanwhile, as the South Korean construction industry is a step ahead of its Chinese counterpart in introducing and utilizing BIM, it is expected that BIM is more actively utilized and accepted in South Korea than in China. According to a comparative study based on the hype-cycle theory, South Korea is at a more advanced stage of introducing BIM, than in China. This study aimed to suggest how to increase BIM utilization rates in China. To this end, this study comparatively analyzed factors affecting BIM acceptance between China and South Korea. For the comparative analysis of the BIM acceptance factors between China and South Korea, literature reviews on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and BIM acceptance model were carried out, and based on that, the BIM acceptance factors were classified. Other BIM acceptance factors were also added and considered, as they reflected Chinese national characteristics and construction industry. As for the derived BIM acceptance factors, construction project participants, especially actual BIM users in China and South Korea, were targeted for the survey. A t-test using SPSS 22.00 was carried out to identify significant differences in data. Finally, based on the t-test results, this study suggested ways of improving the BIM utilization rate in China. Based on the findings, this study is expected to contribute to activating BIM adoption in the Chinese construction industry and also to set a theoretical foundation for future studies on BIM utilization in the industry.
