Adsorption equilibrium and kinetic behavior of two toxic heavy metals hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and mercury [Hg(II)] on mustard oil cake (MOC) was studied. Isotherm of total chromium was of concave type (S1 type) suggesting cooperative adsorption. Total chromium adsorption followed BET isotherm model. Isotherm of Hg(II) was of L3 type with monolayer followed by multilayer formation due to blockage of pores of MOC at lower concentration of Hg(II). Combined BET-Langmuir and BET-Freundlich models were appropriate to predict Hg(II) adsorption data on MOC. Boyd's model confirmed that external mass transfer was rate limiting step for both total chromium and Hg(II) adsorptions with average diffusivity of $1.09{\times}10^{-16}$ and $0.97m^2/sec$, respectively. Desorption was more than 60% with Hg(II), but poor with chromium. The optimum pH for adsorptions of total chromium and Hg(II) were 2-3 and 5, respectively. At strong acidic pH, Cr(VI) was adsorbed by ion exchange mechanism and after adsorption reduced to Cr(III) and remained on MOC surface. Hg(II) removal was achieved by complexation of $HgCl_2$ with deprotonated amine ($-NH_2$) and carboxyl (COO-) groups of MOC.
This study reported the adsorption of Cu(II) ions onto activated carbon prepared from Myristica Fragrans shell (MFS AC) over independent variables of contact time, activating chemical (NaOH) concentration, initial adsorbate concentration, initial pH of adsorbate solution and adsorption temperature. The MFS AC structure, morphology and total surface area were characterized by FTIR, SEM and BET techniques, respectively. The Cu(II) ions adsorption on the MFS AC (activated using 0.5 M NaOH) fitted best to Freundlich adsorption isotherm (FAI), and the FAI constant obtained was 0.845 L/g at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.5. It followed the pseudo first order of adsorption kinetic (PFOAK) model, and the PFOAK based adsorption capacity was 107.65 mg/g. Thermodynamic study confirmed the Cu(II) ions adsorption should be exothermic and non-spontaneous process, physical adsorption should be taken place. The total surface area and pore volume based on BET analysis was $99.85m^2/g$ and 0.086 cc/g, respectively.
The adsorption of methyl green dye using an activated carbon from an aqueous solution was investigated. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of the adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The Langmuir isotherm model showed a good fit to the equilibrium adsorption data. Based on the estimated Langmuir separation factor, ($R_L=0.02{\sim}0.106$), this process could be employed as the effective treatment (0 < $R_L$ < 1). It was found that the adsorption was a physical process with the adsorption energy (E) value range between 316.869 and 340.049 J/mol obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich equation. The isothermal saturation capacity obtained from brunauer emmett teller (BET) model increased with increasing the temperature. The kinetics of adsorption followed a pseudo second order model. The free energy and enthalphy values of -5.421~-7.889 and 31.915 kJ/mol, respectively indicated that the adsorption process follows spontaneous endothermic reaction. The isosteric heat of adsorption increased with the increase of equilibrium adsorption amounts, and the total interaction of the adsorbent - adsorbate increased as the surface coverage increased.
This study was carried out for characterization of MIO synthesized in our laboratory by co-precipitation method and applied isotherm and kinetic models for adsorption properties. XRD analysis were conducted to find crystal structure of synthesized MIO. Further SEM and XPS analysis was performed before and after phosphate adsorption, and BET analysis for surface characterization. Phosphate stock solution was prepared by KH2PO4 for characterization of phosphate adsorption, and batch experiment was conducted using 50 ml conical tube. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied based on adsorption equilibrium test of MIO by initial phosphate solution. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of kinetic model by temperature. Surface area and pore size of MIO were found $89.6m^2/g$ and 16 nm respectively. And, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) value of Langmuir model was 0.9779, which was comparatively higher than that of Freundlich isotherm model 0.9340.

Sawdust is considered one of the cheapest and abundantly available adsorbents, and it is not necessary to regenerate. The spent sawdust can be incinerated or reused as a fuel. The sawdust adsorption can be applied to the removal of color and metal cations from the wastewater. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorptive capacities of sawdust with respect to color, COD, SS, turbidity, metal cation from textile wastewater. Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Sips adsorption isotherm were obtained for the sawdust adsorption of Fe(III). The effects of particle size and amount of sawdust on the adsorption of Fe(III) were also studied. COD, SS, color, turbidity and Fe(III) removal efficiencies were examined at the continuous fixed-bed adsorption test. It was showed the removal efficiencies of SS 50.0%, Fe(III) 25.0%, turbidity 79.4%, color 48.6% and COD 50.9%. In addition, the changes of surface structure between before and after adsorption were investigated through SEM analysis. It is confirmed that the waste sawdust can be successfully used as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment.
In this study, zirconium fumarate of metal-organic framework (MOF-801) was solvothermally synthesized at 130 ℃ and characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses and porosity measurements from N2 sorption isotherms at 77 K. The ability of MOF-801 to act as an adsorbent for the phosphate removal from aqueous solutions at 25 ℃ was investigated. The phosphate removal efficiency (PRE) obtained by 0.05 g/L adsorbent dose at an initial phosphate concentration of 60 ppm after 3 h was 72.47%, whereas at 5 and 20 ppm, the PRE was determined to be 100% and 89.88%, respectively, after 30 min for the same adsorbent dose. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume of the bare MOF-801 sample were 478.25 ㎡/g and 0.52 ㎤/g, respectively, whereas after phosphate adsorption (at an initial concentration of 60 ppm, 3 h), the BET surface area and pore volume were reduced to 331.66 ㎡/g and 0.39 ㎤/g, respectively. The experimental data of kinetic (measured at initial concentrations of 5, 20 and 60 ppm) and isotherm measurements followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich isotherm model, respectively. This study demonstrates that MOF-801 is a promising material for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions.
A POM-membrane was fabricated by immobilizing a keggin type polyoxometalate (POM) H5PV2Mo10O40 onto the surface of microporous flat-sheet polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVFD) membrane using a chemical deposition method. The POM-membrane was characterized by FT-IR, SEM and EDX to confirm existing of the POM onto the membrane surface. The POM-membrane was used to remove an anionic textile dye (Reactive Black 5 named as an RB5) from aqueous phases with a cross-flow membrane filtration and a batch adsorption system. The dye removal efficiency of the POM-membrane using the cross-flow membrane filtration system and the batch adsorption system was about 88% and 98%, respectively. The influence factors such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial dye concentration were investigated to understand the adsorption mechanism of the RB5 dye onto the POM-membrane. To find the best fitting isotherm model, Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Harkins-Jura isotherm models were used to analyze the experimental data. The isotherm analysis showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was found to the best fit for the adsorption data (R2 = 0.9982, qmax = 24.87 mg/g). Also, adsorption kinetic models showed the pseudo second order kinetic model was found the best model to fit the experimental data (R2 = 0.9989, q = 8.29 mg/g, C0 = 15 ppm). Moreover, after four times regeneration with HNO3 acid, the POM-membrane showed high regenerability without losing dye adsorption capacity.
In recent years the accumulation of heavy metals in microorganisms, the biosorption has received much attention because of various environmental application. We have been to research the biosorption characteristics using algae, Spirulina, for the removal of heavy metal ions in industrial and polluted waters. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions, the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10min., and optimum pH and reaction temperature were 4.5-5 and 30-35$\circ $C, respectively. Under the above conditions, the maximum amounts of Pb, Cu, and Cd adsorbed to the unit weight of Spirulina were 107.6mg/g, 78.0mg/g, and 65.6mg/g, and three values were 1.45, 1.56, and 1.26 times higher than those adsorbed to the unit weight of activated carbon under same conditions. The adsorption kinetics of Pb, Cu, and Cd were fitted very well to the Freundlich isotherm and BET isotherm. Biosorption experiments in single ion solutions and binary ions solutions showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than in binary ions solutions.
This study examined the adsorption of a synthetic cutting fluid and cutting fluid effluent on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan, Chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were prepared in form of beads and fibers. A series of batch experiments were carried out as a function of the initial concentration of cutting fluid, contact time and pH of the fluid. The contact angle study suggested that the SDS-modified chitosan was more hydrophobic than chitosan. The Zeta potential study showed that chitosan, SDS-modified chitosan and synthetic cutting fluid had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 7.8, 9 and 3.2, respectively. SDS-modified chitosan has a greater adsorption capacity than chitosan. The experimental results show that adsorption capacity of the cutting fluid on 1.0 g of SDS-modified chitosan at pH 3 and for a contact time of 120 min was approximately 2,500 g/kg. The adsorption capacity of chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan increased with decreasing pH. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) adsorption models were used to explain the adsorption isotherm. The Langmuir isotherm fitted well with the experimental data of chitosan while the BET isotherm fitted well with the SDS-modified chitosan data. Pseudo first- and second-order kinetic models and intraparticle diffusion model were used to examine the kinetic data. The experimental data was fitted well to a pseudo second-order kinetic model. The significant uptake of cutting fluid on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were demonstrated by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and heat of combustion.

Carbonaceous adsorbent (CA-WTP) was prepared by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in N2 atmosphere using waste tire powder (WTP). WTP and CA-WTP were first characterized by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area analysis (BET) and FT-IR spectroscopy. Then, they were tested as adsorbents for removal of Cd in water. CA-WTP exhibited much higher specific surface area and total pore volume than WTP itself and showed higher adsorption capacity for Cd. Equilibrium data of adsorption were analyzed using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. It was seen that both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms have correlation coefficient $R^2$ value larger than 0.95. The results of studies indicate that CA-WTP developed from WTP by heat treatment could be used as efficient adsorbent for the removal Cd from water.
