Auxin-producing antagonistic bacterium K11, which can inhibit Phytophtora capsici, was isolated from a local red-pepper field soil in Gyeong-buk. In order to check for additional PGPR(plant growth promoting rhizobacterium) functions of the strain K11, we confirmed siderophore and cellulase productions by CAS (chrome azurol S) blue agar and CMC plate with congo red, respectively. The strain K11 was identified as Bacillus licheniformis with 98% similarity on 16s rDNA comparison and Biolog analyses. B. licheniformis K11 promoted mung bean adventitious root induction and enhanced root growth of mung bean (160%), pea (150%), and Chinese cabbage (130%), Also, B. licheniformis K11 was able to effectively suppress (63%) P. capsici causing red-pepper blight in the pot in vivo test. Therefore, we could select a triple-functional PGPR which has auxin, siderophore, and cellulase producing ability for effective crops production in organic farming.
The aprE2 gene from Bacillus subtilis CH3-5 was expressed in Bacillus licheniformis ATCC 10716 using a Bacillus-Escherichai coli shuttle vector, pHY300PLK. The fibrinolytic activity of transformant (TF) increased significantly compared to B. licheniformis 10716 control cell. During the 100 hr incubation in Luria-Bertaini broth at $37^{\circ}C$, fibrinolytic activity of B. licheniformis TF increased rapidly at the late growth stage, after 52 hr of incubation, which was confirmed by zymography using a fibrin gel. pHY3-5 was stably maintained in B. licheniformis without tetracycline (Tc) in the media, 60.9% of cells still maintained pHY3-5 after 100 hr of cultivation.

In order to manufacture Bacillus cereus-free fermented soybean products, an antimicrobial agentproducing isolate against B. cereus was obtained from 150 traditionally fermented soybean products. The morphological and biochemical tests and the phylogenetic relationship among 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate named as the strain SCK 121057 was most closely related to Bacillus licheniformis. The B. licheniformis isolate began to produce the antimicrobial agent after 48 h of incubation. The agent was nonproteinaceous and insensitive to heat, long term storage and protease K. Electron microscopic observation indicated that the agent attacked the membrane of B. cereus, leaving the ghost cell. The isolate inhibited growth of B. subtilis, Lactobacillus brevis and various types of pathogenic strains including Escherichia coli, E. faecalis, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus flavus, A. ochraceus, and A. parasiticus as well as B. cereus. After coinoculation of B. licheniformis SCK 121057 and B. cereus in the ratio (as the basis of CFU/g sample) of 10 to 1 on the surface of cooked soybeans, cell numbers of B. cereus had been dramatically reduced after 31 days of incubation compared to those of single inoculation of B. cereus.
Quality properties of soy bean pastes made with Aspergillus oryzae and 5 Bacillus strains isolated from traditional soy bean pastes were examined. The pH decreased gradually and contents of amino-type nitrogen increased during fermentation. There were small differences in moisture and crude-protein contents, whereas big difference was observed in reducing sugar, isoflavones and organic acid contents. Isoflavones in the samples made with Bacillus licheniformis F2358 and Bacillus subtilis F2362 were high. Samples made with Bacillus licheniformis F2382 had high contents of organic acid and good score for taste and overall acceptability in sensory evaluation.
Previously, we isolated plant growth promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) Bacillus licheniformis K11 which could produce auxin, cellulase and siderophore. The siderophore of B. licheniformis K11 $(siderophore_{K11})$ was determined to be a catechol type siderophore which is produced generally by Bacillus spp. B. licheniformis K11 could produce the siderophore most highly after 96 h of incubation under nutrient broth at $20^{\circ}C$ with initial pH 9.0. For the production of the $siderophore_{K11}$, trehalose and $NH_4Cl$ were the best carbon and nitrogen sources in Davis minimal medium, respectively. The $siderophore_{K11}$ was Produced in M9 medium (pH 9.0) after 4 days at $20^{\circ}C$, and purified from culture broth of B. licheniformis K11 by using Amberlite XAD-2, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, and reversed-phase HPLC. The $siderophore_{K11}$ had the biocontrol activity against spore germination of P. capsici and F. oxysporum on potato dextrose agar (PDA). The results indicate that the $siderophore_{K11}$ is an antifungal mechanism of B. licheniformis K11 against phytopathogenic fungi.
Clindamycin resistant Bacillus licheniformis 14ADL4 was isolated from doenjang, a Korean high-salt-fermented soybean food. Strain 14ADL4 contains a single circular 4,332,232 bp chromosome with a G + C content of 45.86%. The complete genome of strain 14ADL4 includes lmrA and lmrB homologs may confer resistance to clindamycin.
Shrimp Jeot-Gal is a popular traditional Korean fermented seafood and has been used for seasoning. We isolated a bacterium showing strong extra-cellular fibrinolysis and chitinase activity from shrimp Jeot-Gal and the strain was designated SC082. SC082 was identified as Bacillus licheniformis by 16S rRNA sequence homology search. B. licheniformis SC082 exhibited optimum temperature, pH, and salt concentration at $37^{\circ}C$, pH 7.0, and 6%, respectively. Substrate specificity of the culture supernatant from B. licheniformis SC082 was detected in fibrin, skim milk, and chitin plate. The fibrinolytic activity was highly maintained up to $50^{\circ}C$ at a pH of 7.0 for 3 hr and was stable up to pH 9.0 at $37^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr. The chitinase activity was remarkably induced by addition of 1.0% colloidal chitin and the pH and temperature optima of the enzyme were 5.0 and $45^{\circ}C$, respectively. In sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and zymogram analysis, this strain produced three fibrinolytic isozymes and two chitinase isozymes. The approximate molecular weights of the putative fibrinolytic enzymes were 23.0, 62.0, and 72.0 kDa and those of the chitinases were 62.0 and 55.0 kDa, respectively. The antioxidant activity of SC082 was also measured by using 2,2-diphenyl-l-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The DPPH radical scavenging was slightly increased in a dose-dependent manner.
The objectives of this research were to 1) isolate and identify thermophilic bacteria for food waste treatment; 2) investigate the capability of food waste treatment using Bacillus species; and 3) develop air-dried Bacillus starters for food waste treatment. Five Bacillus species were isolated from food wastes and identified as Bacillus licheniformis (B. licheniformis) G1, Bacillus circulans C2, Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) E1, Bacillus vanillea F1, and Bacillus atrophaeus G2 based on 16S rDNA sequencing. Each identified Bacillus and the mixture of Bacillus species were cultivated in the standard food waste at $45^{\circ}C$ for 8 d. Changes in cell count, solid contents, and pH of the food waste were monitored during cultivation. Air-dried Bacillus cell powders were prepared using wheat flour and lactomil as excipients, and the cell count and survival rate were determined. The cell count of B. licheniformis G1 exhibited the highest number among the tested Bacillus (${\sim}10^8CFU/mL$). The greatest reduction in solid contents of food waste was achieved by B. subtilis E1 (22.6%). The mixture of B. licheniformis G1 and B. subtilis E1 exhibited a synergistic effect on the reduction of solid contents. Lactomil was determined as better excipient than wheat flour based on the greatest survival rate of 95%.

Bacillus licheniformis was an useful material for improvement of fecal microflora. The stability of Bacillus licheniformis in low pH (pH 2, 3, 4, 6, 7), artificial bile acid, high concentration of salt (0, 5, 10, 20, $30\%$), and ethanol (0, 4, 8, 16, $32\%$) was investigated in this study. The viability of Bacillus licheniformis was stable for pH 3, 4, 6, 7 Final viability of Bacillus licheniformis was confirmed below $25\%$, in the bile acid. In high concentration of salt, Bacillus licheniformis showed optimal viability in $10\%$ of salt. The viability of Bacillus licheniformis was over $95\%$ in condition of ethanol concentration $4\%,\;8\%,16\%,\;32\%$ contrast with uncontained ethanol at $37^{\circ}C$ for 4h. It was verified that Bacillus licheniformis was stable for pH 4, 6, 7, high concentration of salt and ethanol but was unstable in pH 2 and bile acid.
We found out the new method of the consortium for the environmental friendly agriculture by 8 kinds of the selected antagonistic rhizobacteria. This research involved composition of mutual complementary consortium by each antagonistic function such as production of antibiotic, siderophore, antifungal cellulase and insoluble phosphate solubilization. The consortium No.11 among composed consortium candidates showed the most pepper growth promoting activity and Phytophthora blight suppression on the in vivo pot test of red-pepper plant. The consortium No. 11 is combination of PGPR Bacillus subtilis AH18 and Bacillus licheniformis K11. B. subtilis AH18 and B. licheniformis K11 both could produce the auxin, antifungal ${\beta}$-glucannase and siderophore. Also, they had mechanism for solubilization of insoluble phosphate. But, B. licheniformis K11 could produce the antibiotic of iturin which was able to inhibit Phytophthora capsici. We confirmed complementary noncompetitive mutualism between B. subtilis AH18 and B. licheniformis K11 of the consortium No.11. The results came out through treatment of two strains co-culture, treatment of individual culture and co-treatment of two individual cultures for the growth and Phytophthora blight suppression of red-pepper. The treatment of two strains co-culture didn't show a synergic effect in comparing sole treatment on the pepper growth promotion and Phytophthora blight suppression. But, when the pots were treated simultaneously with co-treatment of two individual cultures, an synergic effect was seen in the growth promotion of roots, stem, leaves and suppressed Phytophthora blight on red-pepper in vivo pot test.
