  • Spacer grid springs support the fuel rods in a nuclear fuel system. The spacer grid is a part of a fuel assembly. Since a spring has repeated contacts with the fuel rod, fretting wear occurs on the surface of the spring. Design is usually performed to reduce the wear. The conceptual design process for the spring is defined by using the Independence of axiomatic design and the design is carried out based on the direction that the design matrix indicates. For detailed design an optimization problem is formulated. In optimization, homologous design is employed to reduce fretting wear. The deformation of a structure is called homologous if a given geometrical relationship holds for a given number of structural points before, during, and after the deformation. In this case, the deformed shape of the spring should be the same as that of the fuel rod. 1bis condition is transformed to a function and considered as a constraint in the optimization process. The objective function is minimizing the maximum stress to allow a local plastic deformation. Optimization results show that the contact occurs in a wide range. Also, the results are verified by nonlinear finite element analysis.

  • This paper proposes an Molding error compensation method that improves accuracy with geometry information of injected parts using three-dimensional measuring instrument. a traditional mold design has been conducted by an experience-based trial and error, whereby generally the mold designer would decide the gate location and processing conditions. as a natural consequence, almost all creats inferior goods. It's just a process of trial and error and caught in a vicious circle. Due to this reason, this paper uses a three-dimensional measuring instrument, a commercial analysis package of injection molding(Moldflow, MPI) to analysis a state of flux. In addition to that axiomatic approach.

  • The spacer grid set is a component in the nuclear fuel assembly. The set supports the fuel rods safely. Therefore, the spacer grid set should have sufficient strength for the external impact forces such as earthquake. The fretting wear occurs between the spring of the fuel rod and the spacer grid due to flow-induced vibration. Conceptual design of the spacer grid set is performed based on the Independence Axiom of axiomatic design. Two functional requirements are defined for the impact load and the fretting wear, and corresponding design parameters are selected. The overall flow of design is defined according to the application of axiomatic design. Design for the impact load is carried out by using nonlinear dynamic analysis to determine the length of the dimple. Topology optimization is carried out to determine a new configuration of the spring. The fretting wear is reduced by shape optimization using the homology theory. The deformation of a structure is called homologous if a given geometrical relationship holds before, during, and after the deformation. In the design to reduce the fretting wear, the deformed shape of the spring should be the same as that of the fuel rod. This condition is transformed to a function and considered as a constraint in the shape optimization process. The fretting wear is expected to be reduced due to the homology constraint. The objective function is minimizing the maximum stress to allow a slight plastic deformation. Shape optimization results are confirmed through nonlinear static analysis.

  • There is a great demand for reducing the amount of material used in mass-produced plastics parts, for material cost constitutes up to 75% of the total production cost. Plastics do not easily decay which causes environmental problem. Furthermore, material reduction therefore decreases the amount of oil needed for the manufacture of plastics and thus help conserve this natural resource. Therefore, microcellular foamed plastics(MCPs) was developed at MIT to solve these problem alternation 1980's. Until now, however, microcellular foaming process not designed systematically because the key factors governing the process were not clear. The goal of this research is to obtain the optimal design of the microcellular plastics by using axiomatic approach.

  • Design goal is to find the one that has the highest probability of success and the smallest variation. A robustness index has been proposed to satisfy these conditions. The two-step optimization process of the target problem requires a scaling factor. The search process of a scaling factor is replaced with the making of the decoupled design between the mean and the standard deviation. The decoupled design matrix is formed from the sensitivity or the sum of squares. After establishing the design matrix, the robust design process has a new three-step one. The first is ″reduce variability,″ the second is ″make the candidate designs that satisfy constraints and move the mean on the target,″ and the final is ″select the best robust design using the proposed robustness index.″ The robust design process is verified by three examples and the results using the robustness index are compared with those of other indices.

  • The design process must be planned carefully and executed systematically in order to support designers who are faced with many engineering design problems. In particular, conceptual design stage is very important than other stages such as detailed design or manufacturing stage on designing engineering systems. When designers are faced contradictory situation in task, conceptual design usually requires inventive thinking which depends on their creativity. And in order to develop good concepts, it is necessary to resolve contradictory situations during conceptual design. This paper presents a structure of systematic conceptual design process for designing engineering systems. And we developed the automatic feeding screw device using the proposed design process structure.

  • Current trend of design technologies shows engineers to objectify or automate the given decision-making process. The numerical optimization is an example of such technologies. However, in numerical optimization, the uncertainties are uncontrollable to efficiently objectify or automate the process. To better manage these uncertainties, Taguchi method, reliability-based optimization and robust optimization are being used. Based on the independence axiom of axiomatic design theory that illustrates the relationship between desired specifications and design parameters, the designs can be classified into three types: uncoupled, decoupled and coupled. To best approach the target performance with the maximum robustness is one of the main functional requirements of a mechanical system. Most engineering designs are pertaining to either coupled or decoupled ones, but these designs cannot currently accomplish a real robustness thus a trade-off between performance and robustness has to be made. In this research, the game theory will be applied to optimize the trade-off.

  • Main starting valve is one of the main parts in the control system of diesel engines, purposed for starting main engines. It is composed of ball valve, check valve, actuator, etc. The design axioms provide a general framework for design methodology. Two axioms are independence axiom and information axiom. These axioms can be applied to all design process in a general way. The first axiom is introduced to analyze and evaluate the design of a main starting valve. The design parameters(DPS) are determined sequentially by considering the independence axiom. For the structural design of a main starting valve, the strength is calculated by using finite element method. In addition, the strength of its actuator piston is evaluated.

  • The productivity improvement is indispensible to shipbuilding industry for maintaining the world's No. 1. Simulation based production recently has been an issue as prat of efforts to high efficiency production and Korean shipyards requests simulation system tools specialized in a shipbuilding industry. IT convergence project between conventional shipbuilding industry and IT simulation technology has been carried out and integrated simulation framework was proposed as a way to overcome sporadic developments. The framework would provide reusability of kernels and modules and also ensure for expansibilities to other production simulations. The fact that production simulation system should reflect shipyard requirement would be most important. We suggest an analysis process of customer requirements and functional requirements for production simulations. It is partially based on concepts of software engineering and axiomatic design. The process is applied to a design of configuration for simulation framework.
