  • This paper describes a basic structure, analysis of characteristics and test method for high speed axial-gap BLDC motor. The newly designed axial-gap BLDC motor has 2-stator disks with 3-rotor disks and is easy to increase power capacity by increasing the numbers of stator/rotor disks. For high speed operating, the rotor is composed of light and strong strength material and has several separated magnets to reduce stress concentraction by centrifugal force.

  • The axial load on the concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) column produces confinement stress, which enhances strength of the core concrete. The amount of strength increase in concrete depends on the magnitude of produced confinement stress. From nonlinear analyses, the ultimate resisting capacity of the CFT columns subjected to axial loads was calculated. Nonlinear material properties such as Poisson's ratio and stress-strain relation were considered in the suggested model, and the maximum confining stress was obtained by multi axial yield criteria of the steel tube. This proposed model was verified by comparing the analytical results with experimental results. Then, regression analyses were conducted to predict the maximum confining stress according to D/t ratio and material properties without rigorous structural analysis. To ensure the validity of the suggested regression formula, various empirical formulas and Eurocode4 design code were compared.

  • In this paper, the mechanical property of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP was experimentally studied. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP were tested. The experimental results showed that the elastic modulus of hybrid FRP agreed well with the theoretical rule of mixture, which means the property of hybrid composites are linear with the volumes of the corresponding components while the tensile strength did not. The bearing capacity, peak strain, stress-strain relationship of circular concrete columns confined by CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and hybrid FRP subjected to axial compression were recorded. And the confinement effect of hybrid FRP on concrete columns was analyzed. The test results showed that the bearing capacity and ductility of concrete columns were efficiently improved through hybrid FRP confinement. A strength model and a stress-strain relationship model of hybrid FRP confined concrete columns were proposed. The proposed stress-strain model was shown to be capable of providing accurate prediction of the axial compressive strength of hybrid FRP confined concrete compared with Teng et al. (2002) model, Karbhari and Gao (1997) model and Miyachi et al. (1999) model. The modified stress-strain model was also suitable for single FRP confinement cases and it was so concise in form and didn't have piecewise fitting, which would be easy for use in structural design.

  • This study develops an automation system for metallic mold design that is applicable in forging non-axial symmetric parts. The metallic mold design program is used to design the metallic mold using two-dimensional axial symmetric metallic molds and to predict the stress concentration using finite element analyses. Then, the program redesigns the metallic mold using variables such as the optimal split diameter, maximum allowable inner pressure, fit tolerance, and stress distribution, which are calculated using the metallic mold design program. When the involute spur gear is forged, stress concentration occurs on the tooth root bounded at the symmetric surface. The SCM4 material is suitable for metallic molds because the stress is less than the yield strength of the insert and it acts on the tooth root regardless of the inner pressure. The metallic mold for forging non-axial symmetric parts can be designed through adjusting the magnitude of the contact pressure. The program developed in this study can be applied to metallic mold designs in involute spur gears of forging, which is an ordinary non-axial symmetric part.

  • Most of the research work has been conducted on K-joints under static loading. Very limited information is available in consideration of fatigue strength of K-joints with concrete-filled chord. This paper aims to describe experimental and numerical investigations on stress concentration factors (SCFs) of concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints under balanced axial loading. Experiment was conducted to study the hot spot stress distribution along the intersection of chord and braces in the two specimens with compacting concrete filled in the chord. The test results of stress distribution curves of two specimens were reported. SCFs of concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints were lower than those of corresponding hollow circular chord and square brace K-joints. The corresponding finite element analysis was also conducted to simulate stress distribution along the brace and chord intersection region of joints. It was achieved that experimental and finite element analysis results had good agreement. Therefore, an extensive parametric study was carried out by using the calibrated finite element model to evaluate the effects of main geometric parameters and concrete strength on the behavior of concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints under balanced axial loading. The SCFs at the hot spot locations obtained from ABAQUS were compared with those calculated by using design formula given in the CIDECT for hollow SHS-SHS K-joints. CIDECT Design Guide was generally quite conservative for predicting SCFs of braces and was dangerous for predicting SCFs of chord in concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints. Finally SCF formulae were proposed for circular chord and square braces K-joints with concrete-filled in the chord under balanced axial loading. It is shown that the SCFs calculated from the proposed design equation are generally in agreement with the values derived from finite element analysis, which were proved to be reliable and accurate.

  • This paper investigates the nonlinear analysis of concrete-filled steel composite columns subjected to axial loading to predict the ultimate load capacity and behaviour of the columns. Finite element software LUSAS is used to conduct the nonlinear analyses. The accuracy of the finite element modelling is verified by comparing the result with the corresponding experimental result reported by other researchers. Nonlinear analyses are done to study and develop different shapes and number of cold-formed steel sheeting stiffeners with various thicknesses of cold-formed steel sheets. Effects of the parameters on the ultimate axial load capacity and ductility of the concrete-filled steel composite columns are examined. Effects of variables such as concrete compressive strength $f_c$ and cold-formed steel sheet yield stress $f_{yp}$ on the ultimate axial load capacity of the columns are also investigated. The results are shown in the form of axial load-normalized axial shortening plots. It is concluded from the study that the ultimate axial load capacity and behaviour of the concrete-filled steel composite columns can be accurately predicted by the proposed finite element modelling. Results in this study demonstrate that the ultimate axial load capacity and ductility of the columns are affected with various thicknesses of steel sheets and different shapes and number of stiffeners. Also, compressive strength $f_c$ of the concrete and yield stress $f_{yp}$ of the cold-formed steel sheet influence the performance of the columns significantly.

  • carried out to present a rheology model which is able to treat time-dependent properties of clay. The results were summarized as follow ; 1. The slope (a(e1)) of deviator stress in strain rate test was independent on axial strain, and pore water pressure was decreased with increment of strain rate. 2. The pore water pressure in a stress relaxation condition was not changed when the strain rate before stress relaxation was 0.05%/min., but it was increased with increment of time when the strain rate before stress relaxation was 0.2%/min 3. The greater the stress condition (q/qmax) and the strain rate before creep test became, the greater the increment rate of axial strain in creep test became. 4. SEKIGUCHI's constitutive equation was slightly overpredicted while empirical equation proposed in the study was well coincided with measured values. 5. The constitutive equation induced by a strain function could be dealed with a behavior of the pore water pressure increased with increment of elapsed time after primary consolidation.

  • Plastic plane stress solutions are given for a center cracked strip, characterized by the Ramberg-Osgood plastic index, under bi-axial tension. Using a power law hardening stress-strain relation, an incremental plasticity finite element formulation is developed, and simple formulation is given for computing J-integral with nodal displacements. The near tip angular distribution of von Mises effective stress doesn't differ significantly in magnitude according to the change of loading stress and bi-axial load combination factor. But, for smaller plastic index, the location of its maximum value moves vertically at a head of crack. J-integral value, in the plastic zone near crack tip, decreases with load combination factor for large and small plastic index.

  • A knowloedge of the residual stress distribution at circumferential welds can increase the prediction accuracy of a fracture assessment in pipe lines. In this study, in order to predict the residual stress distribution in the circumferential butt-welded pipes were measured, using the hole-drilling strain gauge method. Their practical applications were performed in to two kinds of pipes. As the results, the following characteristics were found. On the inner surface of pipes, the circumferential and axial residual stresses were both tensile near the center line of welding and both of them changed from tensile to compressive as the distance from the center line increased. On the outer surface, however, the circumferential residual stress was shown to be tensile wile the axial residual stress was compressive near the center line of welding, and later they were revered at the region far away from the centerline.

  • The structural behavior of welded steel box columns subjected to axial compression and combined load of axial and horizontal load is described. The nonlinear stress-strain relation of the material and residual stress resulted from welds were included in the analysis. Inelastic buckling analysis of hollow rectangular sections of various width-thickness and slenderness ratios was carried out using the semi-analytical and spline finite strip method to investigate the local and global bucking stress and mode interaction. The buckling stress was compared with test results and design curves. Post-buckling behavior was traced by the finite element program(ADINA) and compared with experimental results. The comparison showed that the ultimate stress can be used for the design purpose.
