  • Psychophysical experiment was performed to investigate how audio-visual spatial disparity affects on perceptual space in peripheral vision. In the experiment, participants were exposed to two stimuli of vision and sound which comes simultaneously from different directions, respectively. The visual stimulus was implemented by 7 white LEDs which were located at an equal distance with 7 different angles of $-70^{\circ}$, $-40^{\circ}$, $-20^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $40^{\circ}$, and $70^{\circ}$ from the right front. Those audial stimuli were also implemented by loudspeakers which were placed at 9 different directions equally spaced by $5^{\circ}$ ranged from $-20^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$. Each participant then evaluated spatial disparity between visual and audial stimuli with 5 levels of response, in which the higher level indicates the larger gap. When the visual stimulus is applied from the right, the results show that the response level gets higher for a larger angle between visual and auditory stimuli. A similar tendency for the visual stimulus with $0^{\circ}$ orientation was also be observed. On the other hand, when the visual stimulus is applied from the left, the response level gets lower for the larger angle.

  • Two-dimensional (2-D) inversion of magnetotelluric (MT) data for two survey lines having south-north direction from Jeju Island has been carried out. Broad band MT sounding curves with good quality could be gathered by performing audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) survey during the MT survey and by operating the remote reference in Kyushu Island, Japan. Comparison of the 2-D inversion model using MT band only and that using both AMT and MT bands for the field data as well as for the data from numerical 2-D modeling said that high frequency information from AMT survey can be useful for interpreting not only the shallow part but also the deep structures, especially when the formation is resistive. The 2-D inversion models of field data show a thick layer having around 10 ohm-m in the depth of a few hundred meters throughout the survey area, which can be considered as the unconsolidated sedimentary layer. And they also show a conductive anomaly at the central part of each survey lines. It can be either the effect of the surrounding sea water, or the structures due to ancient volcanic events. But unfortunately by now, we do not have any further information about the anomaly.

  • This paper proposes a method of time-scale modification of polyphonic audio signals based on a sinusoidal model. The signals are modeled with sinusoidal component and noise component. A multiresolution filter bank is designed which splits the input signal into six octave-spaced subbands without aliasing and sinusoidal modeling is applied to each subband signal. To alleviate smearing of transients in time-scale modification a dynamic segmentation method is applied to subbands which determines the analysis-synthesis frame size adaptively to fit time-frequency characteristics of the subband signal. For extracting sinusoidal components and calculating their parameters matching pursuit algorithm is applied to each analysis frame of subband signal. In accordance with spectrum analysis a psychoacoustic model implementing the effect of frequency masking is incorporated with matching pursuit to provide a resonable stop condition of iteration and reduce the number of sinusoids. The noise component obtained by subtracting the synthesized signal with sinusoidal components from the original signal is modeled by line-segment model of short time spectrum envelope. For various polyphonic audio signals the result of simulation shows suggested sinusoidal modeling can synthesize original signal without loss of perceptual quality and do more robust and high quality time-scale modification for large scale factor because of representing transients without any perceptual loss.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of an efficient multi-point multimedia conference system using IP grouping. Existing multi-point multimedia conference systems are difficult for multi-user to perform efficient cooperation due to bandwidth limitation for data transmission of video, audio and documentation. In the case that multi-user uses limited bandwidth, smooth cooperation does not accomplish due to transmission delay for the real-time transmission of image and speech data. A hybrid transfer method which is mixed with distributed and centralized methods is used for smooth cooperation, and the network bandwidth is reduced by forming multi-user conference systems of IP grouping in this paper. Also, adaptive image frame variations are used to solve bottleneck effect according to the number of users. An efficient multi-user conference system is designed to support audio quality.

  • This study is an analysis on how current elementary teachers think about nutrition education, how they are teaching it, and problems that have occurred. The main purpose of this analysis was to deal with future problems in nutrition education by analyzing the present situation . The survey was done on 544 currently working elementary school teachers. from the 9 education departments within Seoul, 2 schools were chosen from each department by stratified random sampling. The survey used a questionnaire that was passed out personally to teachers from September 1, 1997 to the 19th. The 544 usable questionnaires were analyzed by using the teachers had nutrition education training and the average score of nutrition knowledge was 13.30 $\pm$2.73 out of 20. Nutrition education was being taught as apart of other subjects in 87.9% of the schools, and mainly by lecture. Audio visuals aids were used by 53.7% of the teachers and the most common was the VTR. Nutrition education was taught as a part of physical education and 41.5% were using teacher guides to help them. 91.9% of the teachers supported the idea of nutrition education in elementary schools. Nutrition education was supported by 80. 0% of teachers to begin when children are in kindergarten, proving that early nutrition education is supported. The analysis showed that nutrition education should be taught by parents(29.4%) , teachers(29.2%), and nutritionists(25.9%) relating that family , education, and school lunch programs should tie in with each other. 96.7% of the teachers responded that they would teach nutrition education. However, 41.0% disagreed with having a separate course for nutrition education . Proper eating habits, nutrition and its diseases, and growth with nutrition were the main categories within nutrition education and the most effect method was thought to have audio visuals, guides for teachers , and to link the subject matter with school lunch programs. The teachers main responses to problems with children were that they are too much instant food, did not eat in a variety , and had no manners in eating. Ironically, the believed that malnutrition, fainting and growth stunt were not important nutrition problems.

  • In this paper, the perceived loudness metering algorithm based on ITU-R BS.1387-1 was investigated and implemented, and its performance was evaluated by applying to 23 pure tones and 9 digital audio samples. Error of the tone test results compared with ISO226:2003 was below 5%, and sample test results, in comparison with Moore's algorithm, showed deviation of less than 4.7% and correlation of 0.96. On the other hand, it was investigated how the implemented algorithm's performance was subject to auditory pitch scale. Its result showed that the algorithm with 37 auditory filters, through correcting a bias effect, has a good performance of less than 2% in comparison with the one with 109 auditory filters.
