  • In the present study, the materials, sizes, and designs of blind eye patch products of skin-adhesive type and glass-attachment type currently available in the market will be analyzed and ergonomically appropriate blind eye patches will be developed. Although these skin-adhesive type eye patches were easy to use, they had shortcomings such as skin troubles due to the adhesive used on the weak and sensitive skin of children and the fact that eyebrows are pulled out and the skin is irritated when the eye patches are detached after being attached. The non-adhesive type eye patches were blind patches to be worn by putting into glasses. These products were made using diverse materials such as neoprene, non-woven fabrics, and felt and showed differences in tactile impressions and irritation to the skin depending on material characteristics. In addition, most products were efficient in blocking light with three-dimensional oval designs comprising darts. In the present study, blind eye patches were designed to reduce skin troubles by using sweat-absorbing and quick-drying functional materials with soft tactile impressions. In addition, to increase the effect to block light and the degree of tight contact with the skin when the blind eye patches are worn compared to existing eye patch designs, the sides of the wings of the blind eye patches were widened, glass frame fixing plates were added, and the darts were made to be curved thereby making an ergonomic design reflecting the shape of the face. The non-adhesive type blind eye patches developed in the present study are considered to enhance the wearing sensation with the use of the material without skin irritation but with cushioning feelings and the ergonomic design reflecting the contour of the face.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of fibrin tissue adhesive and porous resorbable calcium carbonate on the periodontal regeneration of the class II furcation defect in dogs. Class II furcation defect was surgically created on the second, third, and fourth premolars bilaterally in the mandibles of six mongrel dogs. The experimental sites were divided into four groups according to the treatment modalities: Control-surgical debridement only; Group I-calcium carbonate grafting; Group II-application of fibrin adhesive only; Group III-application of fibrin adhesive after calcium carbonate grafting. The animals were sacrificed at the 2, 4, and 12 weeks after periodontal surgery and the decalcified specimens were prepared for histological and histometrical examination. The results are as follows : Clinically, there were no inflammatory response in all groups after 2, 4, 12 weeks. In the Control group, junctional epithelium was grown downward to the reference notch. In Group I, graft materials were exfoliated from the defect throughout the experimenta periods andnew bone was seen in the notch area at 4 and 12 week specimens. In Group II, fibrin adhesive was absorbed at 2 week specimens, and connective tissue attachment increased than that of control group. New cementum and new bone were seen above the notch area. In Group III, the graft material was maintained in the defect throughout the experimental period and inducing the amount of periodontal tissue regeneration was higher than other groups. These results suggest that the use of fibrin tissue adhesive in conjunction with porous resorbable calcium carbonate would improves the stability of graft material and inhibit the epithelial down growth and make it be a feasible method for periodontal regeneration.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and functions of brand labels on clothing. We surveyed the materials and manufacturing methods for brand labels by visiting the label stores and label manufacturers. 200 pieces of children's wear were surveyed. The label attributes that were studied were: the number of labels, the location of the labels, the attachment system for the labels, the color of the labels, the materials used to make the labels, manufacturing methods, and the size of the labels. From this investigation a brand label was classified into a main label and a point label. The main results were: 1. Materials such as fabrics, nonwovens, leather, suede, rubber, PVC, silicone, and metals are used for brand labels. The manufacturing methods for brand labels are weaving, printing, high frequency, heating, and molding. 2. More than 54% of clothes have more than two brand labels attached. This percentage exceeds the attaching of only one brand label in rate. An inside brand label is located at a certain place. This inside label uses only fabric material reflecting inherent brand color and design. The outside brand label is located at several places with consideration of the clothes design. This label uses various materials, colors, and characters matching with the clothes. As for the size, an inside label is mainly medium in size, whereas an outside label is small. 3. A brand label is classified into a main label (first label) and a point label (second label), which are defined as follows. A main label indicates the brand name and is located inside at a certain place using an inherent brand design and a fabric material. A point label is an additional label to express brand image and is located outside at various places for decoration using various characters and design and materials.

  • PURPOSE. This study characterized the synthesis of a modified PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate) denture acrylic loading platinum nanoparticles (PtN) and assessed its bacterial inhibitory efficacy to produce novel antimicrobial denture base material. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Polymerized PMMA denture acrylic disc ($20mm{\times}2mm$) specimens containing 0 (control), 10, 50, 100 and 200 mg/L of PtN were fabricated respectively. The obtained platinum-PMMA nanocomposite (PtNC) was characterized by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), thermogravimetric and atomic absorption spectrophotometer analysis. In antimicrobial assay, specimens were placed on the cell culture plate, and $100{\mu}L$ of microbial suspensions of S. mutans (Streptococcus mutans) and S. sobrinus (Streptococcus sobrinus) were inoculated then incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The bacterial attachment was tested by FACS (fluorescence-activated cell sorting) analysis after staining with fluorescent probe. RESULTS. PtN were successfully loaded and uniformly immobilized into PMMA denture acrylic with a proper thermal stability and similar surface morphology as compared to control. PtNC expressed significant bacterial anti-adherent effect rather than bactericidal effect above 50 mg/L PtN loaded when compared to pristine PMMA (P=.01) with no or extremely small amounts of Pt ion eluted. CONCLUSION. This is the first report on the synthesis and its antibacterial activity of Pt-PMMA nanocomposite. PMMA denture acrylic loading PtN could be a possible intrinsic antimicrobial denture material with proper mechanical characteristics, meeting those specified for denture bases. For clinical application, future studies including biocompatibility, color stability and warranting the long-term effect were still required.

  • A high thermal conductivity material, namely graphene is treated by planetary ball milling machine to transport the heat by increasing the temperature. Experiments were performed to assess the heat transfer enhancement benefits of coating the bottom wall of copper substrate with graphene. It is well known that the graphene is unable to disperse into base fluid without any treatment, which is due to the several reasons such as attachment of hydrophobic surface, agglomeration and impurity. To further improve the dispersibility and thermal characteristics, planetary ball milling approach is used to grind the raw samples at optimized condition. The results are examined by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectrometer, UV-spectrometer, thermal conductivity and thermal imager. Thermal conductivity measurements of structures are taken to support the explanation of heat transfer properties of different samples. As a result, it is found that the planetary ball milling approach is effective for improvement of both the dispersion and heat carriers of carbon based material. Indeed, the heat transfer of the ground graphene coated substrate was higher than that of the copper substrate with raw graphene.

  • In this study the thin films with the structure of Si+SiO$_2$+TiN are made by RF supttering method. TiN, which has small diffusion coefficient and low resistivity, is evaporated between SiO$_2$ and Al layers. It investigates the V-R characteristics depending on the thickness of SiO$_2$ which is used as insulation layer and researches its effects on voltage stability of thin film and varistor. These films show very small resistance valus in negative(-) voltage and large and large value in positive voltage band, and with the increase of voltage, resistance value is rapidly reduced and the satisfactory characteristic of varistor is shown at +1[V]. It is found that resistance value of TiN thin film is small and also TiN thin film has more current than the thin film which is not evaporated by TiN thin film. When Al electrode is evaporated of SiO$_2$ thin film, spiking occurs, but the spiking can be prevented with evaporation of TiN between SiO$_2$ and Al layers and this thin films in made easily because of its good attachment. With the increase of voltage, the resistance is changed into non-linear pattern and the bidirectional varistor characteristic is shown and then its theory can be verified by this experiment. Accordingly, when TiN is evaporated of Si Wafer(n-100), it obtains better voltage-resistance than thin film which is not evaporated and also when varistor character is used electrically to automatic control element such as elimination of flame, power distribution arrestor and constant voltage compensation, satisfactory reproducibilities are expected.

  • The use of biological-activated carbon (BAC) processes in water treatment involves biofiltration, which maximizes the bacteria's capabilities to remove organic matter. In this study, the distribution of the bacterial community was assessed in response to different types of BAC processes applied downstream in the Nakdong River. The bacterial biomass and activity were $1.20{\sim}34.0{\times}10^7$ CFU/g and 0.61~1.10 mg-C/$m^3{\cdot}hr$ in coal-based BAC, respectively. The attachment of the bacterial biomass and the removal efficiency of the organic carbon were greatest with the coal-based activated carbon. The bacteria attached to each activated carbon material were detected in the order of Pseudomonas genus, Chryseomonas genus, Flavobacterium genus, Alcaligenes genus, Acinetobacter genus, and Spingomona genus. Pseudomonas cepacia was the dominant species in the coal-based materials, and Chryseomonas luteola was the dominant species in the wood-based material.

  • Recently, FRB is being used more as reinforcement of RC beam thanks to its material advantages in construction industry. The external attachment reinforcement of FRP is a construction method with advantages such as high strength, stiffness, excellent durability and construction practicability, despite of its weight. However, the reinforcement has a disadvantage to cause damage on permanent structure as its structure is water-tight by low water permeability reinforcement, preventing water from draining outside. The study attempted flexural failure test for GP of which material properties are equally same as the existing FRP and that with permeability, shows good binding with the concrete structure, durable performance and durability, comparably analyzing the improvement of durability and ductility according to changes of fiber contents of composite strip.

  • In this work, we proposed a facile method to fabricate the three-dimensional porous copper current collector (3D Cu CC) for a Si-dominant anode in a Li-ion battery (LiB). The 3D Cu CC was prepared by combining chemical etching and thermal reduction from a planar copper foil. It had a porous layer employing micro-sized Cu balls with a large surface area. In particular, it had strengthened attachment of Si-dominant active material on the CC compared to a planar 2D copper foil. Moreover, the increased contact area between a Si-dominant active material and the 3D Cu could minimize contact loss of active materials from a CC. As a result of a battery test, Si-dominant active materials on 3D Cu showed higher cyclic performance and rate-capability than those on a conventional planar copper foil. Specifically, the Si electrode employing 3D Cu exhibited an areal capacity of 0.9 mAh cm-2 at the 300th cycles (@ 1.0 mA cm-2), which was 5.6 times higher than that on the 2D copper foil (0.16 mAh cm-2).

  • Up-cycling has evolved from its original form of the simple recycling of waste, into an industry of its own that has been gaining momentum. In many developed industries, up-cycling is increasingly seen as an 'environmentally-friendly way of production and ethical way of consumption'. However, an examination of the designs of branded up-cycled products suggests that there is a need for product development fueled by further research on materials. The purpose of this study is to introduce various production methods that can overcome the shortcomings of using waste material and Korean motifs for use in product development, which ultimately contribute to enhancing the potential variety and character of up-cycled products. In order to do so, the up-cycling industry was examined to define key concepts, domestic and overseas markets were surveyed, and case analyses were conducted on domestic and foreign up-cycling brands. In addition, after tracking how leather is discarded and accumulated as waste and then collecting the discarded leather, the properties of the material were analyzed. A study of Korean motifs was followed by the concept summary, and upcycling design expressions that exemplify Korean images were identified. The following two novel methods were used to create six up-cycled bags using collected discarded leather. First, lucky bags and moon pots were selected from various Korean motifs in order to use motifs with identifiable features. Secondly, different variations of cutting and attachment methods were used, including iron mold production methods and presses.
