To study the availability of the Korean Atractylodes japonica Koidz. as ingredients for functional flood, functional properties of solvent extracts were investigated and the results were followed. Yield was 14.8% by ethanol extraction of fresh Korean A. Japonica and 17.7% by water fraction. Acetone extract and butanol fraction showed stronger activity of the hydrogen donating activities, each of 72.9% and 74.2%, respectively, in fresh Korean A. japonica and methanol extract and butanol fraction showed stronger activity of the nitrite scavenging effects, each of 95.0% and 79.2%. in fresh Korean A. japonica. Among the solvent extacts from fresh Korean a. japonica, extract by methanol showed strong antimicrobial activity in which clear zone showed 20 mm for Bacillus subtilis and 19 mm for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Butanol fraction derived from methanol extract showed moderate antimicrobial activity : 18 mm clear zone for Bacillus subtilis and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of methanol extract and butanol fraction were about 2 mg/disc and 4 mg/disc against gram(+) bacteria and 6 mg/disc against gram(-) bacteria, respectively.
Sixteen Atractylodes japonica Koidz. accessions were collected in Jeonbuk, Kyeongnam, Kangwon and Kyeonggi province, and their quantitative characteristics were compared with each other. The relationship of variation between Atractylodes japonica Koidz. accessions was also investigated by means of multivariate analysis. Hamyang 1 accession had the most desirable quantitative characteristics among the accessions: plant height was 86.2cm, number of leaves, 117.2 and number of stems, 34.3. Sudo 1 accession had 12 stems, the most among the accessions. The length of leaf margin serras found in all of them was on average 1.6mm. Most accessions had simple or palmately compound leaf with oval or elliptical type of the leaf shape. The accessions could be classified into three groups by average linkage cluster method. The most remote relationship was found between Group 1 containing Jinan 1, Jinan 2 and Group 3 containing Jeongsu, and Geoje.

Background: In September 2017, wilting and rhizome rot symptoms were observed on Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. in Jecheon-si and Eumseong-gun. This study was carried out to isolate hitherto unidentified pathogenic fungi from A. macrocephala and to test the pathogenicity of isolated fungi against Atractylodes spp. genus such as A. macrocephala, A. japonica, and their interspecific hybrids. Methods and Results: The diseased plants were washed with running tap water, and the boundary between the healthy area and the diseased area was cut while the pathogens were isolated by growing cultures from the diseased areas on Phytophthora semi-selective medium. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the isolates was used in this study for identification. Test plants were cultivated in the glasshouse at 20℃ - 30℃ for 4 months and then used for pathogenicity test. The pots with plants inoculated with mycelial plugs and zoospores were placed at 25℃ for 48 h in a dew chamber where relative humidity was above 95%, and then moved into the glasshouse at 20℃ - 30℃. The presence or absence of pathogenicity of the strains was determined by evaluating the symptom of plant wilting. The inoculation test was performed in three replicates with a non-treated control. Conclusions: On the basis of results of ITS sequence analysis, the strains isolated from the diseased plants was identified as Phytophthora sansomeana. Biological assay using test plants confirmed the pathogenicity of P. sansomeana against Atractylodes macrocephala. This is the first report of rhizome rot in A. macrocephala caused by P. sansomeana.

This study was carried out to obtain the basic information for effective conservation and cultivation of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. The soil texture was sandy loam with low pH and high organic matter content compared to general cultivative land. Aerial part growth such as plant height, number of leaf, leaf length and leaf width was the highest in Tongyong indigenous species, but fresh rhizome weight was the highest in Pyongchang. Frequency of light penetration rate was high at $60{\sim}80%$ of full sun-light, but growth was better in high light penetration rate. The correlation between growth characteristics and habitat environment were investigated in 59 districts. Correation among growth characteristics in habitat, fresh rhizome weight was significant with plant height, number of leaf and stem diameter.

Background: Atractylodes japonica Koidz. and Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. belong to the family (Asteraceae). Their rhizomes, called white Atractylodes rhizomes, are used in traditional medicine. To address some issues with their cultivation, we recently developed eight hybrid cultivars by interspecific hybridization of A. japonica and A. macrocephala. This study was conducted to screen the hybrid cultivars that have high amounts of active ingredients and yield ability. Methods and Results: Experiments were conducted using the eight hybrid cultivars and A. macrocephala (control cultivar) in the experimental field of the department of Herbal Crop Research located in Eumseong, South Korea. We investigated the growth characteristics of the aerial and underground parts. Among the cultivars, 'Sanwon' had the highest rhizome dry weight (53.8 g/plant), followed by 'Dachul' (50.0 g/plant). In addition, the content of atractylenolide I, II, III and total active ingredients were investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography. Compared with A. macrocephala, most of the inter-specific hybrid cultivars had a higher content of active ingredients and yield ability. Conclusions: Through study, we established the superior quality of Atractylodes inter-specific hybrid cultivars. In particularly, it was found that 'Dachul' may be grown as a superior cultivar, with high amount of active ingredients as well as yield ability.
Crop productivity would be determined by relative capacity of source and sink. The study was carried out to measure the effects of shading and flower bud pinching on growth and yield of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. Shading treatment after transplanting was done at 100%, 65, 45 or 25% level of natural light intensity but the pinching treatment was to remove all the inflorescences formed after June 10, July 10, August 10 or none. Growth and yield at early and late stages were periodically measured. At the early stage, shading mainly influenced fresh weight rather than morphological characters. At the late stage, however, severer shading decreased numbers of stems, leaves, roots, fraction and total fresh weight. 65% shading from July 1 to September 30 after skipped the emerging and early growth stages showed nearly same growth and morphological characters but more rhizome yield per unit area than non-shading. In flower bud pinching treatment, earlier pinching increased number of roots, fraction fresh weights per plant and rhizome yield per unit area.
To study the availability of the Atractylodes japonica Koidz. as ingredients for functional flood, the properties of chemical components were investigated and the results were followed. Among general components of Korean A. japonica, total sugars portions from fresh and dried samples took 31.3% and 46.8%, respectively. Mineral contents were K 4,038.9 ppm, P 1,698.5 ppm, Ca 731.8 ppm, Mg 477.1 ppm, Na 87.2 ppm, Fe 56.4 ppm, Zn 22.4 ppm and Mn 13.5 ppm in fresh sample, and K 8,738.9 ppm, P 3,511.6 ppm, Ca 966.1 ppm, Mg 912.8 ppm, Na 147.4 ppm, Fe 113.9 ppm, Zn 46.7 ppm and Mn 23.5 ppm in dried sample. Sucrose in Korean A. japonica was 0.88% in fresh sample and 3.44% in dried sample, and it was main component of sugar. The largest amount of organic acid in Korean A. japonica was tartaric acid, which was 3,849.0 mg% in fresh sample main and 5,305.5 mg% in dried sample. The main amino acid of total amino acids in fresh and dried samples were arginine 291.3 mg% and proline 567.8 mg%, respectively. The main fatty acid of fresh and dried samples were behenic acid 4.0% and linoleic acid 17.99%, respectively. The most distinctive volatile flavor compound was furanodiene which took 17.91% in flash and 40.69% in dried Korean A. japonica.

Plant growth should be affected by mulching method. The study was done to examine the effect of different mulching methods on growth and yield of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. The experiment was done by six different mulching methods; no mulching, rice straw, transparent polyethylene (PE), black PE, two combined treatments of rice hull and transparent PE or black PE. Green shoot and related characters, growth and yield of early and late stages were measured on May 8, June 8 and October 26, respectively. Green shoot fresh weight was the highest in transparent PE mulching, while number of leaves, shoot and stem lengths were the greatest in rice straw mulching of the methods. In its early stage, rice straw mulching had the fewest number of leaves, roots, stems, the smallest width of leaves, and the least fresh weights of shoots and rhizomes. Combined mulching of black PE and rice hull showed the highest values in root-related characters; number of roots, fresh weights of rhizomes and roots. In its late stage, the treatment effects shown in the early stage disappeared owing to high temperature of mid-summer so that there was no significant difference between the mulching treatments. Yield per unit area and marketable yield were the highest in rice straw mulching, and combined mulching of black PE and rice hull.
